Patch 7.2.5 PTR - Build 23958
Another PTR build is on the way! Demon Hunters should take note of the I'll Hold These For You Until You Get Out achievement that rewards the Warglaives of Azzinoth transmog.

Auction House Dance Party
The Auction House Dance Party is live in this build! You can stand on the dance floor and dance, get teleported up to the stage, and grab the Happy Feet buff.

For starters, we’ve activated the Auction House Dance Party event. You can participate by heading to the Auction House nearest to the front gates in either Stormwind or Orgrimmar. Please let us know what you think!

We’re also keeping the Trial of Style active for additional testing this week. In fact, we’ll be hosting a “Pose with the Blues” event on Friday from 2pm to 4pm Pacific time (5pm to 7pm Eastern). If you’re available, we’d love to have you stop by and show off your transmog collection.

If you’ve completed the Pet Battle Dungeon in Wailing Caverns, you’ll see a new Pet Battle Dungeon available for testing today in the Deadmines. Head to Breanni in Dalaran to get started.

There’s also a new round of class changes ready for testing in this build, with a particular focus on Brewmaster Monks, Discipline Priests, Enhancement Shaman, Outlaw and Subtlety Rogues, Arms Warriors, and all Warlock specs, plus a few tweaks here and there for some other specs. We’re rapidly iterating on these changes (and some of them are already outdated compared to our internal test environments) but please give us any feedback you can on what you see.

We’d also like to mention a couple of other pieces of content that aren’t quite ready for rigorous testing but you’ll see in this build. Black Temple Timewalking will continue to be available to test, but please be aware that it hasn’t gone through difficulty tuning yet. Feel free to give it a try, but keep that in mind. Additionally, you’ll start to see some bits and pieces of another new event: The Great Gnomeregan Race. We’ll share more details on what that is once it’s in a complete enough state to start testing.

With this week’s build, we’re also going to start creating dedicated feedback threads for a few topics. Keep an eye out for those. Thanks, and happy testing!

Classes

Demon Hunter (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Prepared now generates 100 Fury over 10 seconds (was 40 Fury over 5 seconds).

Mage (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)

Monk (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Breath of Fire now has a 20 second cooldown (was 15 seconds).
  • Rushing Jade Wind's duration has been increased by 50% for Brewmasters only.
  • Spitfire chance reduced to 20% (was 30%).

Paladin (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Light's Hammer cost reduced by 20%.

Priest (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Discipline
    • Developers’ notes: One of our goals for 7.2.5 is to give Plea and Power Word: Radiance a more straightforward purpose and allow for more opportunities to use both based on the situation. Radiance allowing an immediate Penance heal on more targets more quickly should help with some of Discipline’s difficulties in responding promptly to damage. Plea being an always-available Atonement applicator without having to constantly evaluate the mana cost should help with overall flow of the spec.
    • Divine Star cost reduced by 20%.
    • Halo cost reduced by 25%.
    • Plea now costs 2% of base mana (was 0.36%), but no longer costs additional mana per Atonement.
    • Power Word: Barrier mana cost reduced by 37% and radius increased by 23%.
    • Power Word: Radiance now has 2 charges and a 15 second recharge.
    • Power Word: Radiance now applies 5 Atonements (was 3) at 50% normal duration (was 100%).
    • Smite damage increased by 11%.
    • Smite now costs 0.5% of base mana (was 1.0%).
    • The Penitent’s effects have been made baseline.
    • The absorb effect from Smite (Rank 2) has been removed and reworked into a new Level 15 talent: Sanctuary. The amount absorbed has been increased by 33%.
  • Holy

Rogue (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Outlaw
    • All damage increased by 8%.
    • Ambush damage increased by 33%.
    • Curse of the Dreadblades (Artifact trait) now works with Ambush.
    • Shark Infested Waters now increases Critical strike chance by 20% (was 25%).
    • Slice and Dice’s Attack speed increase reduced to 80%.
    • Slice and Dice increases Energy regeneration by 20% (was 15%).
  • Subtlety
    • Deep Shadows now causes all damage you deal to be increased by 35%.
    • Master of Shadows moved to level 90 row.
    • Premeditation moved to level 100 row.
    • Dark Shadow is a new talent at level 90: While Shadow Dance is active, all damage you deal is increased by 30%.
    • Energetic Stabbing (Artifact trait) now has an increased proc chance of 50% (was 25%), now refunds 2 Energy per point (was 5), and now also works with Backstab.
    • Etched in Shadow (Artifact trait) is now named Weak Point: Increases the critical strike damage of Backstab and Shadowstrike by 5% per point.
    • Gloomblade damage increased by 33%.
    • Master of Shadows moved to level 90 row: Gain 40 Energy over 4 seconds when you enter Stealth or Shadow Dance.
      • Developers’ notes: Pooling energy going into a Shadow Dance has long been the way to play Subtlety, and we’d like to bring that back. This design still gives you more energy for a Shadow Dance, but in a way that allows the Rogue to fully utilize pooling gameplay.
    • Nightblade now increases your damage dealt to the target by 15%, with damage over time component reduced by 35%.
      • Developers’ notes: Further pushes Subtlety away from maintaining Nightblade on all secondary targets and instead into focusing their damage into 1 target. Additionally, gives Nightblade a mechanical interaction with the rest of the core rotation that fulfills the “setup” feel of Subtlety.
    • Premeditation moved to level 100 row.
    • Relentless Strikes now causes your finishing moves to generate 5 Energy per combo point spent.
      • Developers’ notes: This improves Energy capping situations and an issue where with Deeper Stratagem (talent), you would sometimes get 80 Energy back on a 6-combo point finisher.
    • Shadow’s Whisper (Artifact trait) now increases Energy gain by 8 (was 5).
    • Shuriken Combo is a new passive talent available at level 70: Shuriken Storm increases the damage of your next Eviscerate by 10% for each enemy hit beyond the first. Stacks up to 5 times.
      • Developers’ notes: This aims to remove maintaining Nightblade on every target from your AOE rotation on 4+ targets. Instead, Subtlety will deal increased damage during AOE by focusing it into one target.
    • Sprint now allows Subtlety Rogues to run over water. This is only possible when running forward.

Shaman (Forums / Skills / Talent Calculator / Artifact Calculator / PvP Talent Calculator)
  • Enhancement
    • Rockbiter damage increased by 77% and Maelstrom generation increased to 25 (was 20).
    • Rockbiter now has 2 charges, with a recharge time of 6 seconds.
    • Landslide moved to level 15 talent row, replacing Boulderfist.

  • Demonology
    • Hand of Gul’dan impact damage increased by 180%.
    • Infernal Furnace (Artifact trait) damage increase per point reduced to 8% (was 10%).
  • Destruction
    • Developers’ Notes: Soul Shards are now divided into 10 Soul Shard Fragments for Destruction Warlocks, in order to provide more reliable, granular Soul Shard generation, prevent random overcapping of resources, rein in Soul Shard generation slightly, and reduce the number of Chaos Bolts being cast.
    • All damage increased by 10%.
    • Cataclysm cooldown reduced to 30 seconds (was 45 seconds), cast time reduced to 2.5 seconds (was 3 seconds), and damage reduced by 25%.
    • Channel Demonfire damage increased by 56%, and cooldown increased to 25 seconds (was 15 seconds).
    • Eradication’s damage bonus increased to 15% (was 12%), and duration increased to 7 seconds (was 6 seconds).

    • Immolate’s periodic damage has a 50% chance to generate 1 Soul Shard Fragment (was: periodic damage has a 15% chance to generate 1 Soul Shard).

Patch 7.2.5 - Brewmaster Changes

EDIT: Oh, and today's build also has Rushing Jade Wind's duration increased to 9sec/Haste for Brewmasters, making it more flexible on your GCDs, and less swingy on GCD utilization.

And continuing the curtain backpulling (Is that a word? It is now.), here's where our thoughts are right now:

We hear the feedback that the Tiger Palm -> Blackout Strike CDR mechanic isn't adding interactivity so much as restrictiveness and complexity, even if we get the tuning of it right. I last mentioned that we were considering a design that required (1 Tiger Palm + 1 Anything) between Blackout Strikes. That's still an option, but we're actually planning to try (2 Anything), between Blackout Strikes for next build, i.e. back to just a plain 3sec CD but unaffected by Haste.

We're also considering letting Blackout Combo reduce the CD of Blackout Strike even further, along with buffing the other talents on that row to compensate. There's some hesitance with that, due to how much power that would put in that row, but it's not totally unreasonable.

EDIT: Oh, and we're also leaning towards Spitfire replacing Chi Wave instead of Chi Burst. If you love Chi Wave, please speak up now!

Again, none of this is set in stone at all, and your feedback is really helping; keep up the focused and constructive posts!

Nathanos looked down at his left hand. There was enough skin and sinew remaining to grasp a bow, and to teach even the clumsiest of his pupils how to nock an arrow. But he could tell that his strength had waned. His undead flesh continued its inevitable decay, and there would come a day when this hand would be rendered useless or rot away altogether. What good would he be to her then?

He might be a decomposing husk, he told himself, but he still knew the meaning of duty. "Tell me what you command, my queen."

Taking place just prior to the first demon invasions of Legion, “Dark Mirror” by Senior Game Designer Steve Danuser explores Nathanos Blightcaller's past, the decisions he has faced, and his ultimate transformation. Read it now.

Every other week, a new PvP Brawl will be available to players looking for something just a little different. Each Brawl will offer a variety of modes, rules, and scenic changes to the usual Battleground gameplay, and you’ll find them in the Group Finder tool (hotkey “I”) in the Player vs. Player tab. Just like Random Battlegrounds, you’ll receive a reward for achieving victory. Here are just a few of the Brawls you can look forward to:

Gravity Lapse: April 18–25

Gravity getting you down? Step into the Eye of the Storm and be prepared for a whole new en-lighten-ing experience. Every minute, players on the battlefield will find themselves launched into the air, only to gently fall toward the ground again in a perpetual aerial ballet as they try to accrue enough resources to take the win home for their team.

World Boss - Withered J'im
DEADLY: Withered J'im is up again this week, rewarding players with Artifact Power and a chance at item level 860 loot.

Build of the Month - April 2017
Each month or so we will post a couple of hardware setups for those of you who are thinking of upgrading their computer!

All of the parts on this page are Amazon affiliate links. When you purchase your parts through them it helps support the site!

This month
The current SSD prices are fairly flat right now, with most SSDs under $0.50 per gigabyte when on sale.

Depending on how much you want to overclock, you may need to spend a bit more for a better CPU cooler like the NH-D15.

Unless you are doing a lot of video rendering or streaming, you do not need the 7700K and would get more performance from spending that money elsewhere.

Make sure to keep your AMD and Nvidia drivers up to date.

This devalues the BoC talent as we see 33-25=8% fewer BoC's in our rotation. Considering on single target, with BoC, BoS and TP are my number 1 and 2 damaging abilities, are we going to see compensation in damage for this nerf?
We're worried about gameplay and feel right now, and will adjust damage (overall and per-talent) as needed afterward.

This is very useful feedback, thanks.

As you can imagine, the numbers for Blackout Strike's cooldown and the CDR from Tiger Palm are very important to get right on this; we'll tweak them and try a few things. We started out with the 4-beat cycle for PTR; we may also try the 3-beat cycle soon and see how that feels.

One extremely important thing to evaluating the feel of this is what talents you were using. For example, Rushing Jade Wind + Spitfire feel totally different from Eye of the Tiger + Special Delivery, especially when it comes to GCD utilization. Please let us know which talents you're using when giving rotation feel feedback!

Thanks!

I'll be getting on PTR to test the rotation and such later, but I have one question about Spitfire Celestalon. Why was Chi Burst scrapped for it instead of Chi Wave? Nobody uses Chi Wave because of how weak (and random) it is, but Chi Burst currently sees a decent amount of use on live servers for AoE.
Chi Wave and Chi Burst usage are about the same (and both are extremely rare compared to Eye of the Tiger). We chose Chi Burst to replace to start with, because Spitfire is an AoE talent, same as Chi Burst, so would fulfill the same choice. There's still an argument to be made for Chi Wave being replaced, so we're considering that as well, so discussion one way or another (or alternatives) is quite welcome.

The reason I would think most people use eott is that it is the highest dps AND it doesn't intrude on the already tight rotation for BoC, so there is no opportunity cost in using it.
Right; Eye of the Tiger is currently taken primarily because it doesn't take up any GCDs. We're trying to open that up a bit so that you have room to take abilities like Chi Wave and Spitfire (or theoretically Chi Burst), or Rushing Jade Wind, in your rotation.

The common Blackout Combo-driven rotation right now is, in a way, not GCD locked, because it spends a significant amount of its time off GCD, but in practice it feels more like GCD locked, because that time is in between every few GCDs with little empty half-GCDs, adding a stutter to your rotation that we're trying to clean up.

Awesome feedback so far, especially from those who are actively trying a variety of talent builds. That's the most valuable, especially when you consider swapping to the other side of the Blackout Combo / No Blackout Combo line that divides the community playstyles.

Next PTR build, we're going to try a 12sec base CD on Blackout Strike, to speed things up a bit baseline, and hopefully remove the ~1GCD of pause that has been mentioned by several people. (And in fact add a GCD of slush)

The minor stutter has never really felt bad or prevented me from using something that interrupts the rotation a bit since i can always get back into it. Maybe instead of doing something to change our speed to open rotations, you could make it so some of these other underused moves have a modifier on another skill on their own? That could be a theme for brewmaster to have that martial arts feel which simultaneously offers complexity in but also lets us be fast? Honestly i'd rather break my own rotation that have space forcibly added in.

This slower paced feeling just makes me very unhappy and while my experience may not matter much, it seems to be something a lot of other players are feeling. I hate this new slow paced idea for monk and the new mechanic of reducing BoS CD doesn't feel fun or interesting. It just feels like a rock is being tied to legs.

I just don't understand wanting to make so many people unhappy to solve something i've never heard people actually complain about with stutter. It makes me miserable on my favorite class and spec.

I'm not sure this is exactly the valuable feedback that is desired. I'll give a less emotional/fun based approach later...but it's important to me and I hope that enjoyment is truly a factor here.

This is some of the most valuable feedback here, actually. Your experience matters a ton.

A question that you, and others, have asked here is basically, "Why change this, I didn't mind the hiccup/stutter/awkardness/whatever?". I empathize with that sentiment, and I'd like to try my best to answer that.

Brewmaster is not a particularly popular spec, and the awkwardness of their offensive abilities is one of the prime reasons why. That sort of thing is shrugged off by some people, really bugs some other people, and contributes to a general discomfort with a spec to most (and is usually hard for them to describe exactly why, falling back to works like 'doesn't flow' or 'clunky').

Most of the people here actively discussing this are people who have stuck with Brewmaster, and play it extensively, probably because you fall into that first bucket; the 'clunkiness' doesn't bother you, and you're used to it. So we're not surprised at all that many people here have this reaction of "it was fine, why change?".

The goal of these rotational changes is to find something that flows well to the non-dedicated Brewmasters, while still feeling 'fine' (or better) to all of you currently-dedicated Brewmasters. That second part is more important than the first, and we're going to keep iterating on this until we achieve it.

We hear you that we're not there yet; we're not surprised at all that our first build of it wasn't perfect. We'll keep working on it, and appreciate your constructive feedback and experimentation with different builds, to help us get there.

Thanks!

P.S. Just to further pull back the curtain on potential versions of this rotation that we're thinking about:
- Current PTR build: At least (2 TP + 1 AnythingElse) between Blackout Strikes
- Next PTR build: At least (2 TP) between Blackout Strikes
- Another potential option we're considering: At least (1 TP + 1 AnythingElse) between Blackout Strikes. This would probably mean a 8sec CD on BoS, and a 5sec CDR on TP. It's very hard to truly imagine how rotations will feel without playing them, but some may be interested in thinking about it. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Fenryr Hotfix
Why allow some of the playerbase to cheese this tame, and others have to solo a boss meant for 5 players?
I don't really think 'fun' is the word you're looking for here - people love to scream that we've removed 'fun' from the game when there's a bug that's fixed and then things take a bit of effort, and this really just perpetuates negativity in the community.

Doing a 5-man dungeon and then taking advantage of a broken spawn doesn't really scream 'fun'. It was a cool way around the challenge, sure, but on both sides it wasn't exciting - getting Fenryr was the point of excitement, and that is still possible, so let's try to be sensible.

---

For clarification - the soft reset method was a bug, which has now been fixed, and the intended method of taming Fenryr is to complete this challenge solo.

As others have said, it would be silly to remove those who already obtained the pet, especially when early adopters didn't necessarily realize that the method was unintended, so we have no plans to do so.

Best of luck to all those trying to obtain Fenryr!

For those who haven't tried it yet, could you clarify whether we need to solo the whole dungeon, or just Hymdall / Fenryr?
Just through Hymdall and Fenryr, from my understanding. I can double check on this. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Great question. Overall, I think radio silence tends to do more harm than good. Even if your answer is “We don’t know,” I feel you’re better off saying that than saying nothing. Even if things are super heated, I feel like you’re better off saying “I care enough to try and engage” than to try and wait it out and hope it cools off.

Here’s where I would advocate it:

1) You’re trying to build hype for something or let players try and figure something out. This has to be done deliberately though.

2) Someone could get hurt. If players ask me why someone got fired, or even if they got fired, I’m going to take the Fifth. I won’t talk about a candidate who is interviewing for fear of their current employer retaliating against them.

3) You make the situation objectively worse. I say objectively here, because it’s too easy to argue “Well we might just fan the flames.” I’m talking about things like players want details for how a sever got compromised by malware, but if you share too many details, you’re just making life easier for the hackers.

4) There are pretty serious legal ramifications. Specifically if you settle a lawsuit and the lawyers say not to say anything. This applies to insider trading stuff. I wouldn’t talk about a studio we were thinking of acquiring or a software package we’re thinking of licensing.

Overall I can’t think of too many other situations though. Radio silence is different from not responding because of lack of bandwidth or because you feel like you’ve beaten a topic to death. (Source)
