IRVINE, Calif., Oct 04, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft(R): Cataclysm(TM), the highly anticipated third expansion for the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game*, will be released starting on December 7, 2010. The expansion will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows(R) XP/Windows Vista(R)/Windows(R) 7 and Macintosh(R) at a suggested retail price of $39.99 and will also be offered as a digital download from the Blizzard Store. A special Collector's Edition packed with bonus items will be available exclusively in retail stores for a suggested retail price of $79.99.

"Cataclysm includes the best content we've ever created for World of Warcraft. It's not just an expansion, but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "With the help of our beta testers, we're putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months."

The first two World of Warcraft expansions, The Burning Crusade(R) and Wrath of the Lich King(R), each shattered PC game sales records upon their release.* In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races — worgen and goblins — will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.

The beta test for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is currently underway. I can't believe there are still people like you around. Why do your kind constantly fail to realize that they simply can not wait any longer? By the 7th of december, ICC has been running for a year. A YEAR.
They've waited long enough, and even if the game isn't perfect by december 7th, they have to get it out.

Also, i'm fairly the sales is not a factor when they think of a release date. If you plan on buying it, you will, no matter if it's christmas time or not. They want to release it when they feel it's needed/ready.

Yeah, agreed. I'm also 100% of the belief that Blizzard won't 'open' the activation stuff for online downloads of Cata at midnight, otherwise there would be little point for some people to go down to the box stores and stand in lines :-\

So does this mean the 4.0.1 patch won't happen until around November 7th?

    Cheaper how?

Also, though the download may be available right away, the keys won't activate until 10am on 12/7. so if you don't mind losing that 10 hours (assuming the servers are even going to be up) and you don't care about the ce, then the digital purchase is the way to go. Otherwise, you still need to get a physical copy.
    proof. Now.

Way to be a complete retard. You completely contradict yourself in one post. First you say they can not wait any longer because ICC has been out a year, oh gawd noooooo!!!!one! even if it isn't ready. THEN you say they will release it when it is ready and needed... What the hell. Is THIS really the kind of confidence people have in blizz now.

These blizz fanbois are getting kind of scary. I used to joke about them blowing up bioware hq, but now I'm starting to think it's less of a joke and probably something I will see on the news.

Like Media Markt (in the netherlands) sells a TV for 1800 euro and online its 1200 euro. For the "service" ?

But erhm how is this digital download going to work. Can you download it before release? And do you have to pay before you can download or can you just download and pay afterwards for the key?
  1. Sparkymisslecat's Avatar
Anyone know *when* you can do the digital download? Like, is it possible to get it a week before launch so the game is ready to go at midnight, or is it still faster to go stand in line at the store?

No, we can still expect 4.01 soon. We're getting two patches before Cataclysm this time. 4.03 will probably be mid-November.

"It's ready when its ready" HOw often have BLizzard said that? Dont tell me you mean - "its ready when the right window to launch it without having properly tested it". Cause thats EXACTLY not what we need right now. The MMO industry is already filled with this thinking and WOW has done alot of things to try to avoid it. Cause ppl expect quality from BLizzard.
