Update #2 - Yes, Patch 4.0.6 is next week, stop asking.

Luck of the Draw Buff

In case you aren't already aware, Luck of the Draw is the name of the buff you get for grouping with random people using Dungeon Finder. It currently provides a 5% buff to damage, healing, and health if you have at least one random player in your group. With patch 4.0.6, we are increasing this buff to 5% damage, healing, and health per random player, up to a maximum of 15%.

In the process of working on this change we actually discovered that the Luck of the Draw buff has not been working in Cataclysm at all, save for a few specific dungeons. This means that the difficulty in almost all normal and Heroic dungeons for those using the Dungeon Finder tool was higher than expected. Still, with that issue corrected in 4.0.6, we feel the bump up to 15% for three or more random players found through the Dungeon Finder is a necessary change.

The intent of Luck of the Draw is to help make up for the lack of coordination, communication, and familiarity that pick up groups suffer relative to organized groups of guild members and friends. Cataclysm dungeons, especially on Heroic mode, are quite challenging and ask for more group organization than the Wrath of the Lich King dungeons did. Therefore, Luck of the Draw became relatively weaker in Cataclysm. I'm painting the picture with unfairly large brush strokes here, but in general, Heroic dungeons are of appropriate difficulty for organized groups, but just brutal on Dungeon Finder groups. Players wonder, and rightly so, why Dungeon Finder supports Cataclysm Heroic dungeons at all when the chance of success is so low.

We think buffing Luck of the Draw is a good way to go about correcting the difficulty differences because it makes things slightly easier on PUGs without depriving the organized groups of a fun challenge. We also think the bonus is modest enough that it won't encourage organized groups to split up and just PUG instead - - the success rate for PUGs relative to organized groups is just that far behind. We still think you'll have more fun and a greater chance of success running dungeons with friends, but when that isn’t possible, we hope this change will make Dungeon Finder a more pleasant experience. Also remember that patch 4.0.6 is adjusting the difficulty of some bosses that are particularly unforgiving, such as Ozruk in Heroic Stonecore, though to be fair, we are buffing some underperforming encounters as well. In addition, we are offering larger Justice Point rewards for players who just prefer the faster pace and greater success rate of normal dungeons, and by the time 4.1 comes out everyone will have access to more powerful gear, making the older content even easier. But then there'll be new challenges to face!

We'd like to thank everyone who has provided us with feedback. We do listen, even if we don't immediately deploy every design change suggested by the player community. Our intent is to make the game fun for a wide variety of players, which can be quite a challenge when you have a community this large and this varied. We hope you continue to enjoy the game, and look forward to sharing more changes (and a few surprises) in the months ahead.

All Rated Battleground Weeks Now 10v10

Looking at participation, the 10vs10 rated battleground weeks have been far and away more popular than the 15vs15 weeks. The difference in organizational requirements as well as battleground map popularity have been a couple big factors that have led to the 10vs10 weeks seeing a great deal more action. By making this change and supporting the popular option we hope to encourage even more players and teams to participate, as they won’t have to wait out every other week, or struggle to beef up to 15 players to match the requirement.

We also have plans to adapt additional battleground maps in the future to work in the 10 player bracket to increase the variety of maps available.

It only applies really in a complete random group. If your still not gonna coordinate at all your gonna wipe. a dps doing 5k dps will get 10% more damag from luck of draw doing 5.5k dps. not very helpful. in the end, you have to learn how to play better.

    Amazing solution.

I don't even know how people can be whining like babies about this. If you weren't having trouble in dungeons you are likely one of those ignorant idiots who believe everyone has a group ready and waiting for them in a guild. Pugs are terrible even if you are a retard elitest and think that you are the shit its likely you will get someone pulling down the group if you happen to use LFG this buff will make up for it.

Elitests need to stop freaking out over every needed nerf.

Agreed, totally braindead move on Blizz's part. They are effectively punishing organized runs, aka guild runs.

The whole thing is a bunch of crap anyway, in a year we'll overgear it all, and they'll be back to being a joke.

Sometimes Blizzard can be so idiotic.

Lol @ everyone whining about content that was trivial nearly 2 months ago.

There is more to this game than crappy 5-mans.

Why does anyone care if they give this buff to PUG groups? I hazard to think that most of you that think heroics are easy are running them with guild groups and semi-intelligent players.
Since they didn't increase the minimum item level for accessing heroics, I think this is a very nice change.

I have been in many PUGs lately with 110k health tanks and as a healer it's just much harder.

The real solution would have been to either increase the min item level, or bring back the BC reputation model. They already had the reputations in place to do this. Make Revered a requirement to accessing heroics, then you could use Tabard for the final Exalted level.

It is usually not hard to endure your average pug heroic, it is just frustrating!

As people said, hardcore or elitist people shouldn't be affected by this 5-15% buff at all.. as they should have groups set up.

If they don't.. well I really doubt they are enjoying pugs as they are at the moment.

It is probably same people complaining now that complained about the very optional ICC buff. They don't have to use it, but they sure will.. and sure as hell will they complain about it in forums. Luck of the Draw is pretty much optional (run with randoms or with a guild).

But heroics are serious business!! Well they must be. I mean thats where the most elite and hard core people go..!

Punishing guild runs? Unless your guild is bad, guild runs have a much higher success rate than pugs because there's coordination, communication, etc. The buff is to compensate for pugs not having that.

Once content patches get released they will become a joke, and eventually it will turn out like WotLK with being able to jump into the current content after running them. If this wasn't the case though, it would be another BC situation, where the hardcore players got to see all the content, while a majority of the playerbase never got passed Karazhan.

Now the difference Blizzard can make is retaining the difficulty of raids of this tier, especially in heroic. I feel the difficulty now is good. Normals aren't necessarily faceroll, at least not to the scope of WotLK raids, and heroics are quite difficult.

And as for your last comment. Why so mean

    Absolutely ridiculous. Heroics were fine.

I love how people scream and rage about getting a 15% buff, when if they're blasting through heroics as a guild, they don't get the 15%. It's the same people who screamed and raged about the ICC buff, but who never actually shut the damn thing off when they started a fresh lockout. It's just screaming to hear themselves scream.

For me, I hope that this will lessen the tax put on completely random and oftentimes shit random PuG composition. I queue as a healer with a guildmate who's an assassination rogue. We queue, eventually get a tank and two other DPS ... and they're an arms warrior and an an enhancement shaman. We get a dungeon that's absolutely brutal for melee, like Stonecore, or some of the bosses in Lost City. Should we all get a dungeon CD because the boss mechanics in those encounters make it an absolute nightmare on melee DPS and because my random group consists of players playing and liking their preferred spec? Or we take that same group into Grim Batol, where only the rogue can sap dragonkin and the shaman hex one target. (And bind an elemental.) Should we once again be punished because we didn't randomly get a hunter or another rogue? Should we be punished because during Throngus' Phalanx he's standing in rocks and the melee DPS can't get to him ... or when he's got his mace the tank's kiting him around but the melee DPS can't get to him because of the fire puddles?

If you're doing an all-guild random group you can coordinate this sort of thing. "Okay, we're gonna do a random, and take Bob the Hunter, Phil the Mage, and Todd the Rogue. When we finish this one we'll cycle in Betty the Elemental Shaman, Bert the Fury Warrior, and Chris the Warlock, and if Nancy wants to swap in her Resto Shaman, I'll sit out." No 15% LotD buff, it's likely everyone's in vent, and we're all used to how the tank pulls or if someone's a skinner and wants to get the leather from the dragons and if someone has to run and answer the door. People and random LFG groups shouldn't be punished on the chance that they get a sub-optimal group for the dungeon they're thrown in, and instead of nerfing the heroics to the ground or making people wait another few hours for a hopefully better group to pop, giving them UP TO A 15% damage/health/healing buff will ease that strain.

Not every LFG is a coincidentally happy sunshine place of the stars aligning and everything working out like a Christmas Miracle. If that were the case, no one would have any Random LFG horror stories, and the vast majority of us have them and have exclaimed in guild chat or vent in a frustrated whine "DEAR CHRIST I HATE PUGS SOMETIMES".

I just don't see the need for this since it doesn't really take that long in the first place (queues yes, the dungeons themselves no).

    15% is alot.
I've run significantly more than 15 heroic pugs (where I queue by myself as dps) and the only ones that lasted an hour were the ones that fell apart. Otherwise its 2-3 hours of playtime easy. I am jealous of your good experiences!

I don't know why any hardcore players would complain. If you're hardcore, heroic 5 mans shouldn't even be on the map for you and you shouldn't care if some casual scrubs are going to have an easier time getting blues. OMFG BLUES.

Yeah, I think it's pretty slick too.

Absolutely the right way to go. PUGs shouldn't be a cake-walk, but 1) they do suffer for being less coordinated, even if you have a good leader (notice I didn't say tank) and 2) having a buff that scales with number of random members will encourage people to bring in random people, which is always good. It used to be you saw a lot of guild groups of 3-4 that would bring in randoms in Wrath, but I haven't seen that at all in Cata, unless it was my guild group, and we do it because we're a tiny guild.

I'll wait and see, but other than the usual round of knee-jerk QQ over "nerfs = too easy" I can't see why anyone could object to this.
  1. Buu's Avatar
No, not bad. GOOD, VERY GOOD.
And people whining they surrender to QQ... DUH!!!
Of course they do. If enough people aren't happy with the game OF COURSE they have to adjust to the 100,000 "QQing" and not listen to the 100 saying it's OK. Come on, are you people complaining about those changes so OBLIVIOUS about the number of people wanting those changes?

Let me say this, since you're minority and not happy with the changes, YOU GUYS quit the game. I'm sure the amount of people that will still play will make Blizzard not even notice your ragequit.
