MMO-Champion - Luck of the Draw Buff
Update #2 - Yes, Patch 4.0.6 is next week, stop asking.

Luck of the Draw Buff

In case you aren't already aware, Luck of the Draw is the name of the buff you get for grouping with random people using Dungeon Finder. It currently provides a 5% buff to damage, healing, and health if you have at least one random player in your group. With patch 4.0.6, we are increasing this buff to 5% damage, healing, and health per random player, up to a maximum of 15%.

In the process of working on this change we actually discovered that the Luck of the Draw buff has not been working in Cataclysm at all, save for a few specific dungeons. This means that the difficulty in almost all normal and Heroic dungeons for those using the Dungeon Finder tool was higher than expected. Still, with that issue corrected in 4.0.6, we feel the bump up to 15% for three or more random players found through the Dungeon Finder is a necessary change.

The intent of Luck of the Draw is to help make up for the lack of coordination, communication, and familiarity that pick up groups suffer relative to organized groups of guild members and friends. Cataclysm dungeons, especially on Heroic mode, are quite challenging and ask for more group organization than the Wrath of the Lich King dungeons did. Therefore, Luck of the Draw became relatively weaker in Cataclysm. I'm painting the picture with unfairly large brush strokes here, but in general, Heroic dungeons are of appropriate difficulty for organized groups, but just brutal on Dungeon Finder groups. Players wonder, and rightly so, why Dungeon Finder supports Cataclysm Heroic dungeons at all when the chance of success is so low.

We think buffing Luck of the Draw is a good way to go about correcting the difficulty differences because it makes things slightly easier on PUGs without depriving the organized groups of a fun challenge. We also think the bonus is modest enough that it won't encourage organized groups to split up and just PUG instead - - the success rate for PUGs relative to organized groups is just that far behind. We still think you'll have more fun and a greater chance of success running dungeons with friends, but when that isn’t possible, we hope this change will make Dungeon Finder a more pleasant experience. Also remember that patch 4.0.6 is adjusting the difficulty of some bosses that are particularly unforgiving, such as Ozruk in Heroic Stonecore, though to be fair, we are buffing some underperforming encounters as well. In addition, we are offering larger Justice Point rewards for players who just prefer the faster pace and greater success rate of normal dungeons, and by the time 4.1 comes out everyone will have access to more powerful gear, making the older content even easier. But then there'll be new challenges to face!

We'd like to thank everyone who has provided us with feedback. We do listen, even if we don't immediately deploy every design change suggested by the player community. Our intent is to make the game fun for a wide variety of players, which can be quite a challenge when you have a community this large and this varied. We hope you continue to enjoy the game, and look forward to sharing more changes (and a few surprises) in the months ahead.

All Rated Battleground Weeks Now 10v10

Looking at participation, the 10vs10 rated battleground weeks have been far and away more popular than the 15vs15 weeks. The difference in organizational requirements as well as battleground map popularity have been a couple big factors that have led to the 10vs10 weeks seeing a great deal more action. By making this change and supporting the popular option we hope to encourage even more players and teams to participate, as they won’t have to wait out every other week, or struggle to beef up to 15 players to match the requirement.

We also have plans to adapt additional battleground maps in the future to work in the 10 player bracket to increase the variety of maps available.

    But its so true though..
As already said before, people get used to the buff and they will suck whenever they see their preformance without it.

I don't understand. All the people who are SUPER AWESOME AND NEED A CHALLENGE!!!11one should be done or near done raid content and never go into heroics anyway.
If heroics are still a challenge for you and your guildmates and you're upset that they might be too easy after this buff, I've got news for you! You're a bad player! Heroics right now are not challenging for 5 friends in vent, and on top of that the buff won't even apply when you're in a group of all guildies.
    Sheesh.

Reading some more comments let me rephrase this.

"Without nerfs they will player better to clear the instance"
No.. Without nerfs I will play better, to carry them THROUGH the instance.

"But it didn't kill me (with 15% buff) so I can just stand in it and have the healer keep me up through it"
"Oh it killed me I better move next time"

You're assuming they know what hit them.
No.. They are too busy staring at their actionbar clicking ice lance. When they die, it means they get to get another soda. Why would they check combat log, why would they try to figure out what they did wrong? Why would these people who can't even pass 1st grade mathmatics even think that their death was due to anything other then the healers fault? Or the tanks, provided they ARE the healer.
They will make NO attempt to move out of it next time. They will stand in the same thing. Five thousand more times... Algalon: "AND FEEL NOTHING" Metallica: "No remorse".

"Life is but a walking shadow, a poor herp, who derps across the stage, and then enters your heroics and wipes you for hours."
Am I getting through to you guys? This only helps the people who don't suck. Who survive the first shadow gale... And then are force to duo or solo down the boss. 15% more could be very helpful when three pugs just got gibbed by a whirlwind they stood in and you're down 2k dps because of it.

Is this going to effect lower level instances? Like the vanilla ones?

    That's gonna suck if so.

Haha they are already nerfed heroics!!! Damn wrathbabies whining "game is too hard" ...Oh well I guess we will see what hqppens

Nerfing only for Pug groups? Very much approved. No one wants to do them anymore. This should ease a few people back in.

Me I guess I'll just stick with my guildies as usual. No change here, but my Alt might like a little boost to get her up there with tanking.
  1. xile's Avatar
why does anyone care if the content was nerfed, heroics were not hard to begin with and even before any type of nerf with good gear you could dam near chain pull almost every heroic and blow through every heroic with ease. So they're easier now, point? It's not like you were being tested in the first place.

Yes because most of the time someone dies it isn't obvious.. I've had maybe 5 instances in the past 5 years where it hasn't been blatantly obvious what happened within a few seconds. And those situations i still have no clue what happened.

For those who think Blizz is catering to all the bads, you are right, they are, more than 50% of the people who pay for this game each month are casual players, so they have to please the majority of players who help keep the lights on so the minority can go do Heroic Raids, content that less than 25% of the player base will get to see.

If you understood economics to a small degree this would not be a hard concept to understand.............
Sorry, but these numbers always get inflated for convenience. You have no access to numbers. I'm right in the middle. I'm not hardcore, and I'm not lazy. I'm casual. And I don't need my content dumbed down because I can't handle not being able to down a boss. I'm an adult and I know that if I can't down a boss, I better reevaluate my style of playing and adapt. Not just run to the forums with a face full of tears bitching about how GC disrespected me and how everybody I know is quitting. Take some responsibility.

should we say hai to facerolling heroics with aoe only? after taking a step in the correct direction, to make heroics actualy HEROIC, aka hard, blizz took 2 steps backward... nerfed some bosses+ this totaly pointless 15% buff... iam personaly disapointed.
  1. Garnik's Avatar
    Nothing will change, really.
All the self claimed hardcore and casuals will still for the most part make groups within their guild, so they don't get any use of the random player buff. Bad players will still die with the buff, just slower.

    Also, Casual =/= Baddie.
  1. Jarv's Avatar
Guild runs will be more organised and will also received increased guild rep as of 4.0.6 but at the cost of a 15% buff.
Pugs gain a buff for the randomness and lack of coordination but not other rewards apart from loot.

    Seems a reasonable trade off

I'll still only do the daily HC either way

it doesn't effect them at all. How could heroic that are ran in pugs with an increased buff affect them? It's because they are exclusionists. These hard core players think they are entitled to have the exclusive rights to play this game. Like they are some gods gift to gaming and they should be.the only ones to access it. So yeah, they got nerfed. Big deal. Quit, what's the phrase? QQing over it. It's just like the icc buff. Run with your amazing guilds that you have screamed at us to find, leave us and the boost behind. Turn it off, and move along, exclusionist.
  1. Malkhor's Avatar
Oh well, since heroics aren't challenging anyway, might as well make them a bit faster..
  1. Bure's Avatar
This is awesome. It doesn't affect all those XXXXHARDXXXCOREXXXX people because they are the ones claiming they're too good for pugs and run with their guilds (which isn't a bad thing at all). It is completely unchanged for you guys! And then for people like me who only occasionally have enough time to string together a queue for a heroic (pure dps, so long wait) and then complete it, it makes the process more smooth and pleasant. My point is that all the people saying that this is making the game too easy for them are the ones who won't be receiving the buff anyway. And it's not like 5-mans are end content, it's always been the stepping stone to attaining gear.

On a personal note, I used to raid a lot, but now I'm finding other things to do with my time in WoW. I'm not one of those saying I need to have top gear accessible, because I don't have a need for it. If I'm only doing a handful of dailies, and the occasional heroic, I (obviously) will be geared appropriately for what I'm doing based on the amount of time I'm putting into it. Yeah, when I raided I had 277s and whatnot, because I needed it to make raiding more successful, and that gear was the reward for doing those types of challenges. And top-tier gear isn't needed for what I'm doing. I don't look at toons that have nearly all 359 gear and say, "why can't that be easier to attain? FUUUUUU" That is an elitist attitude in that everything should be handed to you. If you really want top end gear, then you should rightfully be doing the things required to earn it. I miss raiding a lot, and the difficulty of the 5man heroics I think are great because they definitely feel like mini raids to me, which I think is awesome. And it does not require the time commitment of a consistent raiding schedule to attain that level of difficulty to appease me.

Looking at my personal situation, I guess you *could* complain that it's sucks because it's a nerf to the top end of the content I'm doing, but most people have felt frustration from this and this is still a great way to fix it for the people who are in situations similar to mine. I am a casual, not a baddie. Just because I have neither the time nor desire to join my guild in their heroic raiding, does not mean I don't know how to play. I realize I have gone a little off-topic just there, but I feel the point is still relevant. And for the people who felt heroics were already easy enough to being with, then you could be moving onto harder challenges in the game, such as raiding. Like I said, 5-mans are not the end-game content of an expansion, merely a stepping-stone, and may be end content for people who don't have the time for raiding.

TLDR: Doesn't matter, those who think they are too good for the buff should be doing different stuff anyway.

I dont see the big deal about this 15% buff, honestly how many of you have actually found heroics challenging lately? They was a challenge like a month ago when everythign was new and you didnt have the apropriate gear, now they are just a boring grind you have to do to get your valor, and I personally welcome anything that might make them slightly faster.

On the other hand I can name at least 10 things that pugs will still fail on and this buff wont help that.
  1. segoplout's Avatar
I have quit the game for now due to some life stuff. Yet I have every right to post - have played since feb 2005.

The reason people are pissed off about this change is that dungeons were challenging in Cata, yes - moreso than WOTLK, where it was too easy yet more like vanilla and TBC, but the main reason is as far as I see it, is that easy mode normals and heroics lead to one thing - boredom and going through the motions, dungeons where you know every pull, you can be on phone, watching a movie etc and it's just going through the motions every day for points and you see gear drop a hundred times that you don't need. What's the problem with that? Where a dungeon is like doing the god awful dailies in the game - no surprises, no struggle. The team cannot fuel the game to fit the power players and there are many of those. The development cycle is such that if things are too easy, you are ahead of the development of the game. Patches are slow to appear, and increasingly so. In vanilla the patches took a long time to appear but in those days, complaints were dealt with silence from Blizzard whereas now, hundreds of complaints are taken seriously. There are very bad players in dungeons (WOTLK syndrome) now. They will not improve. This has NOTHING to do with what you are calling elitist vs casual - the skill factor is key. A bad player will not even be better with these nerfs as some of the more astute posters here have zoned in on. I burnt myself out too fast on Cata I admit but the level of difficulty was perfect for normals and heroics. It was menacing at times - I grouped randomly and spent hours sweating in some dungeons, as I did in UBRS when it was 15man - I loved it. You needed balls to go in and do a heroic in Cata, anything could happen, you could have an awful tank/healer or amazingly low dps but it felt like a challenge. What's going to happen now is that pugging will see the better players pull the non skilled through. Will be no cakewalk but the people that can't play will get some rewards and the skilled will have to try even harder - yea you could say a better challenge. The worrying factor in all the people welcoming this though is that ultimately, the players will be ahead of the development cycle as I said before and this will lead to boredom and epics/higher blues being less valuable. This is bad for the game. Blizz cannot keep up with this. No software company can and this is why Blizz revised their model for Cata as in WOTLK we had a stagnant year of too slow development, too easy a game. Cata is not big enough to sustain this - for me, it was an expansion that focused on remaking old world with a few new zones thrown in. You can beg for an easier game, but in the end this means you will get bored faster and this is something Blizz want to avoid, which makes me think one thing here (I am aware this is a long para but this is all one mindset) - they have revised expansionism and next expansion will come sooner and they are somewhat already into it.

Blues were meant to be blues again in Cata, epics were supposed to be epic. Blues are supposed to be good. Not just vendor trash or d/e trash as they were in wotlk. They want you to work for epics. Not a free for all.

My idea to improve dungeons and heroics is to award healers and tanks double JP and money in the dungeons. The lack of healers and tanks means for dps pugging outside their guilds, long wait times and even when you get in, can be a fail group and you have waited for nothing - there is clearly a problem there - so rewards the tanks and healers - they can use points for offspec if needed as they have done something a lot of players simply cannot be bothered with in fulfilling those roles - everyone seems to want to dps = limited responsibility. Why do we wait so long? Not enough healers or tanks. Make their rewards higher and you will see more people rolling tank/healer or using their specs for the points and cash. Also Blizz could award a dungeon rating for players. There is a huge chasm between pvp and pve, the pve dungeoners need a ranking like the pvpers. Would help queues. Would also mean if you suck you will end up in suck group.. but why should the awesome pve dungeoners get randomly grouped with players that clearly have no clue? Dungeon ranks please blizz!

I don't see the big deal, my personal issue isn't heroic difficulty, it's not what caused me to cancel my sub; the lack of lv85 content isn't addressed, a +15% buff for randoms is hardly compelling me to resub. I'll keep an eye out for 4.1 some 4-5 months down the road, I suppose.
