Patch 4.1/4.2 Content - Firelands raid not in patch 4.1
We now have a very official blue post for the information, Firelands is not part of Patch 4.1. See the previous news post for more information.

You may be asking, "where's Firelands?”

Our goal with each major patch release, and especially with each expansion, is to learn from the past and use that knowledge to improve the game as we move forward. One of our biggest regrets in the pacing of Wrath of the Lich King was the Crusaders' Coliseum. The Trial of the Champion 10- and 25-player raid was released while many raiders were still busy with Ulduar, which meant a premature end to Ulduar raiding -- and a lot of players didn't get a chance to experience all of Ulduar's content during the normal expansion progression.

Having learned that lesson in pacing from Wrath of the Lich King, we don’t feel Cataclysm needs a new raid tier just yet. We’re close, though, and Firelands will be part of patch 4.2, which is expected to hit the PTR very soon after 4.1 goes live.

One of our long-standing development goals has been to release more regular content updates for you to enjoy. Our plan is to package features like raids, dungeons, and daily quest hubs into smaller content updates and release them as soon as possible, rather than wait and release them as large but infrequent updates. Our first significant step in this direction will be Cataclysm patch 4.1, and we hope the rest of our content updates moving forward follow this model.

This new flexible approach to updates allows us to release content like Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub so that you'll have more challenges to overcome while we make the flames of Sulfuron even fierier and this second showdown with the Firelord even more climactic.

While we know that some raiders feel prepared to smack down the Firelord once again, releasing an epic raid dungeon before its time would, in the words of Ragnaros himself, be "too soon!"

If firelands isn't being released why are people finding all of this content?

A good amount of development progress had already been made on Firelands by the time we decided it would be better to release it in the following patch. Because of that, a lot of information about what is now considered 4.2 content was already in the game files for the initial 4.1 PTR build. This just reinforces what Bashiok said about 4.2 being scheduled for release on the PTR shortly after 4.1 goes live.

Development for both patches is currently well in progress.

Good. Blizzard finally learned their lesson from TBC and WotLK. Naxx, Ulduar and TOC were out for 4-5 months when Blizzard released the next tier. That meant that ICC lasted an entire year. Sunwell lasted for 8-9 months. There's no reason to rush the first few content patches out and have the final content patch last too long.

Did you just say sunwell lasted 8-9 months?

Yes, Putting out content before enough of the playerbase has seen current content is damaging to the game. Look at Sunwell, look at Ulduar. In both of those cases only a very small percentage of the playerbase saw the content at lvl, in both cases those raids were followed by what was largely considered inferior content that was released simply to please those larger, less hardcore players.

It is much better, both from a game developer and player perspective, to filter the content like this *because* it gives more people time to appreciate content. The idea that raids should just be pushed out of Blizzards ass asap is the same sort of thinking that gave us naxx-redux and ToC. It is the philosophy of quantity over quality and it is damning in a grander scheme of time than the instant gratificationist has the power to understand.

Keep the official wow forums style posts over on their forums please. You don't know me, nor my guild, who has all of our drakes and bane title. So just like that your opinion is void and null.

Please. Just stagger the gear so you have to gear up from the current normal raids before you can enter the new raid, then shortly after, allow the points vendors to sell T11. That way people will still have to do the old content before they move on. If they fail to clear and gear, then they have to wait longer to enter. Period.

And no, blizzard was doing ToC from the get go knowing how they were going to approach it. It was a poor quality raid because they didn't put effort into it, that's it and that's all. Quality is up to blizzard, not "pressure from the fans".

Please people, please take the blinders off before this game is totally destroyed. I put far too much effort and "had" far too much fun with it. Please don't ruin the game for me, and many others.

You are right, work does pretty much describe WoW. As for me, I will choose to remain on holiday with a company that gives a damn about it's players.

Be happy, otherwise something like this could have happened...

    - Ragnaros yells: TOO SOON! YOU HAVE AWAKENED ME TOO SOON, BLIZZARD! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS INTRUSION?

    - Blizzard yells: These mortal players, my lord! They have invaded your forum and seek to steal your secrets!

    - Ragnaros yells: FOOLS! YOU ALLOWED THESE INSECTS TO RUN RAMPANT THROUGH THE HALLOW FORUM? AND NOW YOU LEAD THEM TO MY VERY PTR? YOU HAVE FAILED ME, BLIZZARD! JUSTICE SHALL BE MET, INDEED!

I don't think it's a bad idea at all. My guild's a pretty good one, we're still half way through the heroic modes with plenty of grinding face left to go. If Firelands were released today, chances are we wouldn't be back to do the remaining heroics until they became comparatively trivial, which would be a real shame. The fact that only 36 guilds (at time of writing) are 13/13 suggests that there's still some life in this tier. I liked the vanilla styles of patching; small - medium sized patches regularly with some content, rather than big ones every half a year.

Think about this and read this carefully please.

Its not too soon, doesnt matter where you are in progression. Your guild could be 1/13 and it still wouldnt be to soon. More content is better, regardless of how far 99% of the player base is, that will just give them even more to do.

So, lets say your main "point" is that then people wont see all the content we have now!! Aka they just go where the better loot is and they dont really care for the "content" anyway. People like that can just replace the word content with loot and be done with it. Nothing is stopping you from still doing all the old content. Lets say your guild stops you, or that would be an issue for allot of players, here is a very simple solution. BLIZZARD PUTS IN A QUEST TO KILL NEFARIAN BEFORE YOU CAN ENTER THE NEXT RAID, when they have their decent number they seem to want that have done the content, remove the attunement.

Thing is guys, with this, who loses? The casual players dont lose, cause they are still progressing, maybe they even have more inspiration to clear the current content faster, making them progress at a decent pace. The hardcore guilds get new content too, which everyone will see later. I just do not see a downside.

Now this is purely speculation, but its solid speculation: Blizzard, a multi billion $ company cant even finish enough content for their player base and they are pushing stuff back. The blue post almost confirms it, just in a sneaky way, giving people some content and making it sound "better". They are dropping the ball, that blue post was like a fluff piece.

They knew the news will split the community into a hardcore/casual debate where one side keeps flaming the other, dropping our focus from the real problem, blizzard themselves.

Think about this, with my suggestion, does anyone actually lose out on content? Does it negatively effect any part of the player base?
BLIZZARD PUTS IN A QUEST TO KILL NEFARIAN BEFORE YOU CAN ENTER THE NEXT RAID, when they have their decent number they seem to want that have done the content, remove the attunement. >> I totally agree. So no one can skip it and after a few month, say atleast 2, they need to simply remove the restrictions. Everyone is happy - the hardcore player base which enjoys the content and the casual player base that they can see the content even without killing endbosses.

I liked the idea of BC, where u HAD to go trough maggi, gruul > ssc > fds > hyal > BT. Even tanks had to farm resi gear for ssc (hydross was the boss). Newerdays u don´t need such resistence anymore, got a totem, buff whatever and thats it.

Don´t know why they don´t do it again, was fun to play and by far enough content for all... this playerbase shit is only an excuse for them to say, hey we get enough money out of it, you still play the game even if we through out only 1 Tier content a year... (what means 1 raidinstance for normal) i mean wtf.. with all that money u could bring 3 Tiers of raidcontent a year, and no ONE would say AHHH thats to much.. we are not done with the first tier... just go like it was in Burning Crusade and all would be fine...

And to Gearup new players, simply let them get through justice points or "new" 5man Instances the prev raidcontent gearlevel.
F.e: U get released 3 Tier Contents. After 4 Month - 2/3 new Dungeons. After 4 Month - 2/3 new Dungeons, etc etc. So the playerbase can even simply equip new players trough them. Or alts or whatever they do.

Like now with ZA/ZG ilvl 353, its simply shows that u can get trough that geared for firelands...nHC raids.
  1. Sillinoob's Avatar
Yeh exactly, the big downside of TBC was when you recruited new players they hadda go through all the old content to gear up and get attuned again.
Easy way to stop that from happening is to make the attunement requirement only temporary, that would fix everything.

But yeh, i cannot see how anyone in the right minds wants to say no to more content.
  1. purefury's Avatar
while we might not need new raid next week, we surely do need full new tier in April. 2 new 5mans with no gear upgrades are fun for few days...

while ill need more time to finish 12/12, and proly will do 10/12 only, i dont see how ZG+ZA constitute for new content... its just an excuse to delay firelands.

lets just say 4.1 is balancing patch, not content one.

Why should PvP seasons be delayed because raiders are too slow? Oh well, I'll be saving $14.99 a month while I wait for 4.2, so no complaints here.
  1. Sny's Avatar
This is the right decision in my opinion. It's obvious they're still working out how to balance classes and raids with the new system and I'd like to see each tier last about six months rather than three tiers lasting four months and a year of Deathwing.

    I don't get people, I really don't.

People say that there was low content with the release of Cataclysm... Have you even seen the changes made 1-60? 80-85 and endgame raiding ISN'T the whole game, although I guess it is for some folks... Guess what, you don't pay Blizzard's paycheck.

    Here's a really simple thought:

If you want new content the second you're done with the old, PLAY ANOTHER GAME. Even if Blizzard pushed new content every freaking week, some people who can play 24-7 wouldn't have enough to keep them busy.

It's not like you can't resubscribe when the new content comes out. Play Rift, play Old Republic, play Monkey Island, who cares. If you're such an avid gamer that you can clear everything you care about in the game faster than 95% of everyone else, then don't put the onus on the game company to keep you occupied. Take a step back and choose who you give your time to. Because it's not even about money, with all the free games there are out there.

When I thought 4.1 was going to have firelands, I actually felt it was too soon. I think if they get 4.2 out mid-May to early-June that's pretty close to perfect timing. Just one man's humble opinion.

seems like blizz learned their lesson from Ulduar -> TotC. Well done Blizzard.

"don't put the onus on the game company to keep you occupied."

So why are we paying monthly fees again?
  1. Meteos's Avatar
Hmmm my thoughts on Blizzard has changed quite a bit with this decision. I'm just glad they are learning from their past mistakes in releasing content. Wrath was just a mess with it from Ulduar to Toc, it just didn't seem right and then ICC for pretty close to a year. Even in BC with releasing almost everything except BT all at once and only giving out a new 10 man then Sunwell. I imagine from here on out the expansions as well as content will be better progressed.
  1. Zatie12's Avatar
In my opinion it would have been great to roll this out as a current tier 11 dungeon which is slightly more difficult than the existing ones. This new lockout system restricts raiding much more than Wrath did and we need more content sooner rather than later, without the need to forever keep gearing up.
