Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times. Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

I don`t see the problem, if you whine about "boo hoo tanks and healers can get mounts and pets", guess what? Here`s what you do...MAKE A TANK, AND TANK. Problem solved. They`re doing this to help dps, probably those without guilds or with guilds that don`t run dungeons and for solo players only, if you have a problem the solution to your whining is also there. Make a tank, or try to enjoy the hopefully lower dps queue. Fucking little babies whine about anything, gawd. Lol.

Any DPS who complains about this is a moron. My only 85 is my main and is a Warlock.

Stupid. Maybe if they made tanking or healing more fun, instead of annoying, I'd play one. But this still won't get me to roll tank again. I detest blood, detest feral, my warrior is stuck at 80 and I'd never hit prot on him to begin with. As for the pallies, well, blizz killed ANY chance of them hitting 81 with the holy power mechanic, so thats out...

I hate healing now, unlike most, i actually ENJOYED healing in wrath. But fuck it now.

So some ppl are mad because you don't need to pay 300g for faster queue? Blizzard pay the tank for you... QQ will always QQ.

Because what about when the mounts and pets and gold don't really mean much anymore. What if you don't care about pets and mounts, what if you have a bunch of gold already, how does this make taking on the headache of the LFGT worth it?

The only thing good about this is that more DPS classes will go Tank/Healer to get those rewards...the bad part is DPS will never have access to them at all other than the normal way

I dont get it DPS. You wanted lower times. You want to deal the numbers. You choose to wait 15+ minutes to do this, yet complain nothing is done about it. Now Blizzard is testing new ways at accomplishing this, and you get upset because tanks are being rewarded?

If they didnt give it to the lowest represented role, can you imagine how high the que would be if it was available for EVERY role?

Humanity makes me laugh, cry, and hate.

To the people that understands what Blizzard is trying to do, *hug* I love you.

What is different for a dps? Atleast if youre a tank you got different speccs, that need different gear sets. A pure dps like hunter/lock/mage/rogue uses the same gear for all speccs. So when we have all we need why should we queue?

Some say that dps shouldn't bitch about tanks and healers being able to get rare mounts in a goodie bag because the instances are so easy now:
Well yes theyre easy, but guess what? You can do the ONCE a day. Tanks and healers can now spam random hcs all day and have a chance to get it in each dungeon.

The queue times will get lower, stop the qq: Oh yeah tanks and healers will get even shorter queues (like they need it) And we will shave off 5, maybe max 10 mins of ours.

    Great change blizz...

When I read the blue post I had to pinch myself in the arm and look at the date, because I sure as he** thought it was still April 1th.
You contradict yourself with "So when we (dps) have all we need why should we queue?" Well if you have everything you need and don't want to do heroics and lots of others have the same thoughts as you then surely the remaining dps will then get the call to arms because they will outnumber the tanks.... Nobody can say how this will play out because we don't know how many tanks will be tempted to start tanking due to this change.

Also you can do Stratholme for the Deathcharger as many times as you want per day.... and if you really cared about the other 2 mounts mentioned you'd already have them by now unless you were just incredibly unlucky.

Everyone wins with this change. DPS will get reduced que times, tanks will have a small chance at getting an item for carrying through all those dps who do less dps now than I did in Sunwell during Burning Crusade.

For everyone bleating away at how unfair this is, etc. keep in mind the solution to all your problems are simple: You want the rewards? Roll as a tank. More tanks = lower qs and more dungeons, which is the entire point of this. It is irrelevant if dps is at a disadvantage. Dps benefit is being able to wait 10-20 minutes less time in a line. No one is forcing you to play a dps class. There is an imbalance, and they're offering a solution. There is a vacuum that needs to be filled, and Blizzard is doing just that. It's no different than any other position in life; the higher the demand for a service, the greater the reward for offering said service.

Butthurt that the tank that gives you faster que gets a reward? Really? Really? Stfu
Some people complain because Blizzard believes this to actually be a fix. That means they don't care beyond this. They have no other solution. This was it. It's scary.

Isn't it bloody damn obvious after all the years of WoW what the problem is in the first place? I just can't believe Blizzard looks the other way and toss out something as random like this and calls it a "fix".

Hell yeah i tank. You can't honestly think i sit in a queue for 30 min as a dps while picking my nose waiting for the minutes to pass. The point is it was pretty damn fast to gear up. Once you're geared up there is no point to run the dungeons again. It doesn't matter if you're a tank, healer or dps. The rewards aren't good enough to reduce the "queue" times. That is all i have to say.

Pardon me? I -want- to tank. I -can't- tank. I play a Rogue. I love Rogues. A Rogue will always be my main, and she will always have all of my Pets, Mount, and rare/inobtainable titles.

I could re-roll, sure. But I wouldn't be playing something I loved. I would lose four years of work, love, and dedication. When I joined, was I told I couldn't tank? I didn't even know that those roles existed: I figured everyone could tank, damage, and heal to enough extent that groups could just charge in and fend for themselves. I was wrong, but I loved my Rogue.

Don't know why I would be grateful for something I don't need.
I guess I just happened to get the thing that I didnt want, while others got the thing I would have preferred.

    Damn the fates!

Personally I would've rather see Tanks and Healers get a little buff. I think this is a temporary fix, the big incentive for tanks and healers is lower que times.

But this will be wait see how it works out changes. But I see ALOT of boss skipping in 4.1.

This isn't going to help the queue times nearly as much as Blizz thinks.

As a Tank or Healer.. there's less reason to queue on a regular basis with this system. It's much better to just to sit around and wait for the queue times to get bad enough that my rewards get higher. Then, I'll still get instant queues (while DPS will still have to wait 45min+) and still pick and choose which bosses to skip.

I want the rewards on my main, which is my hunter. How the fuck do you suppose I do that?

After spending a few minutes thinking about it, I came up with a perfect solution to the high queue times. Remove the Valor Point reward from Daily Random Heroic. Your flaw is that any new 85 that wants to join a raiding guild, a guild that is doing raids, not running heroics with undergeared players, won't get excepted unless they have good gear. Those DPS have to wait with the DPS that want the Valor Points for the few tanks that want the Valor Points. If they just remove the Valor Points, and they increase the amount per raid boss, Heroic queues won't be clogged up.

They are, hate to break it to you. You have 1 healer and 1 tank per 3 DPS, so their roles are crucial and matter more than the DPS roles. Can you carry one, even 2 bad DPS? Yes. Can you carry a bad tank? Lawd no! How about a bad healer? Nope.

I'm not just speaking with my own interest at heart, I want to see how others in my specific situation feel about this. I imagine it varies between apathy and outrage.
This will help the people just hitting 85 on their mains, but this applies to everyone.
As I said in my previous post, I stopped tanking heroics about 2 weeks after release as they held nothing of value for me. Guild rep I do every week when raiding (currently 11/13 heroic). VP is capped most weeks, but i've been selling boots for god knows how long, back from being the first on the server to do so and getting 20k for them to now where I struggle to get 4k.

This is a good thing. I will tank heroics again if it means I get goodies. Myself and the other MTs and offspec tanks in my guild, so right there you have 5 amazingly geared and capable tanks willing to do run after run for these mounts and achievements. How is this not helping the DPS? we shorten your queue time, we get xtra goodies, sounds good to me. If it means average joe gets shorter queue times, then what's the issue with this?

I see your point here, but then it's like they are just mounts, and youll be getting a shorter queue anyway.

Not to get off topic here but.....you thought your rogue would be healing? I guess if you got a bone saw and a German accent....maybe.
