Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

oh and now everybody who has no gear and no skill and not experience in tanking will select tank to get the mount/pet and pugs will fail harder then ever. Blizzard really should change the whole "1/5 heroics but only 2/15 and 2/25 tanks in raids needed" system. The encounters need much more tanks and heals and the role of the tank and heal needs to be made much less responsible.

Right now most people don't want to tank/heal because it's a job where slacking gets punished hard while slacking dps is hardly noticeable (reaching enrage timers are the only way to give a hit that your dps sucks). DPS can be afk for 3 minutes in a heroic - hardly anyone notices. Tank goes afk for 20 seconds all need to wait. Heal goes afk for 20 seconds during fight -> wipe.

This imbalance in responsibility leads people to prefer beeing a dps because nobody yells at you for "not holding aggro" or "not healing enough" because even when the dps sucks it's very rare a bad dps can wipe the group.

I have a suggestion for those of us that have a mount-collecting DPS main, and want to do heroics with a healer/tank alt:

Worst idea ever. If you want a cool mount run the fuckin dungeon yourself, dont get the mount via randomness from a fuckin bag of goodies. Its' fair you'll get flask/gems etc, but mounts? Really blizz!? The speciel about these mount, is because they are rare. If we can get those mount from a CTA dungeon thing, we actually get 2 chances per day to obtain one of these mounts, so i guess these mounts wont be that rare anymore, AT ALL!

Great, so now my 150+ runs in MGT for that mount would be a waste.

What makes u think that it wont require 150+ pugs to get a similar mount?

This was the wrong direction for blizzard to go IMO.
For any max geared toon DPS, Tank or Healer there is currently no incentive at all to do heroics.
It is a terrible way to make gold.
Who even needs 5 man loot anyway? it takes all of a month of casual play to get every piece of gear you could need from heroics.
If doesn't take much to cap on valor for the week by just raiding, I just don't see the point of any decent player in a decent guild having any incentive to run heroics unless they are gearing an alt, and even then they most likely have non-terribad guildies to run with.
This doesn't change the fact that the general player base is fucking awful at the game, Had blizz decided to extend these benifits to other roles, it would have been incentive for me, at any rate, to come back to 5 mans and suffer terrible players to end up doing 50% of the total damage in the instance. but clearly we just need more tanks to post things like

Exactly, and therefore the fix that's really needed is the people who play this game. Try not being rude to anyone at all today, not even to randoms in pugs, no matter how they suck. Smile, be patient, and try to help each other, now THAT would motivate tanks to go pug.

I hinted at this before but the reason I don't ever tank for pugs is not because I'm bad. I'm sure I'd make a pug happy because they'd at least have a group. The reason I'm not is because I don't want to meet idiots. I don't mean people who can't play. I'd rather have a 1k DPS who's friendly than a 30k who flames everyone. The fights in random pugs over nothing at all, the insults, and the risk *I*'d get flamed for something I'm not to blame for - no thanks.

I doubt I'm the only one who feels like this. Improve the game and community - start with yourselves. No, I'm not an angel myself, but I really do try. I do. If everyone would at least try, the game as a whole would improve.

Take a step back a sec, lots of dps feeling they are being punished when they are missing the point.

It's the only bad thing for sure.It mean,it's time to l2p newbie lil'tankies.
    I like the idea,and i'm a DPS.BTW ,I don't care about Mounts,comp pets and stuff...
Wow players is like horses,Blizzard needs to put a carrot on the stick to make them move ahead...It ever works
You gave them this think, now you may deal with it.

i guess making the mounts boa would solve a lot of frustration, and less qq.. all you'd have to do is tank with your alt more, or level 1 to tank with, and you'd still get the mount.
the good part is, if its boa, you'd have tanks who continue running it so their alts + main get the mount. problem solved.

You know, having fewer opportunities to earn mounts and non-combat pets doesn't really disadvantage DPS in any way. It's just cosmetic stuff (as for the gold and gems, I doubt it will provide better income than farming, so you can't really say that you have less potential income than a tank).
Plus none of it is exclusive to Call to Arms. You can get that stuff if you just go solo some old instances.

As it stands, I spend a good amount of my time each day in old dungeons and stuff trying to get mounts and pets for my achievements, and I'm a tank. This Call to Arms thing will actually make me queue for heroics more, as I will be able to try for those mounts and pets without wasting my time in old content where I'm not helping anyone.

Offering incentives for tanks to queue will make more tanks to queue. Alright, it may cause less DPS to queue as well. Either way, the tank-to-DPS ratio in the queue will go up, and that's a good thing.
If the situation everyone is imaging occurs and the tank-to-dps ratio actually exceeds 1:3 because everyone starts tanking and nobody wants to DPS, then the Call to Arms will switch to DPS and everything will be fine.

As for the carr... mounts. When I want to take a shot at any of those mounts with my tankadin I just head to coherent dungeon and clear it in 3-5 AoE pulls. When I'm on my healers - I switch to dps farming spec and blow things up before they get to me.

So tell me - why should I spend 30 to 50 minutes in random group, in poorly designed dungeons, that doesn't offer me any gear upgrades, when I can hop into old ones, clear them in 15 minutes and carry on with my business without having to listen about my poor dps/tanking/healing or waiting for someone who constantly goes afk and can't be kicked because of how fcked up is kick-timer?

So tell me once again - why should I queue for random dungeon? Mounts? No, thank you, I'd rather solo that Sethekk Halls.
You seem to think we disagree. I haven't run a heroic in nearly 2 months and this incentive won't change that. I already have some of the mounts and don't really care for cosmetic stuff anyway. But just because it won't encourage me or you to queue as a tank or healer and just because you don't mind the longer wait times doesn't mean it won't encourage some people to tank/heal more often and other dps will like to lower queue times.

Personally I think QUES will not be shorten much. Even if we go from 35 to like 32 big fing deal. This is a start but Blizzard has to realize that a bonus for tanks that already have instant ques does not change the fact that their is way MORE dps. DPS will still have thirty minute wait times.

Deny it all you want, but tanking and healing are on average far more annoying and stressfu (clearly shown by the amount of people not wanting to fuffill those roles vs DPS), and the chances are carrying a bad DPSer are much higher than the other two roles.
I'm really against saying things like those I'm going to, but if something in this game makes someone feel stressed and uncomfortable [bar things like first Sinestra kills maybe], that means it's not for her/him. Or they should prepare better. Or L2P.

It's that simple - I join as tank. My role is to make sure no-one gets hit by nasty monsters [when it's possible, I can't tank that patch of fire or void zone], keep my TPS high enough to not cripple DPS output and be the healer's best friend. If there's loose mob, no problem, taunt it, smack it. If it's loose again cause someone is trigger-happy - none of my business, learn to manage your aggro or blast the mob marked with skull, it's there to tell you - KILL IT!
It's that easy - I have my job, I do my job. And as long things die in reasonable time with close to none deaths in party - I'm fine with that. If something is not right, I'll brief quickly through problems. If it still doesn't help - I have ignore or that clunky kick option. Or I can leave. No need to be stressed by some smartass John Doe .

In my opinion, the mounts and pets should be completely new, or re-implement some unobtainable ones ( e.g. the old model racial mounts) or give cross-faction mounts.
Anyways, good that they are actually implementing something to help the que times.

I am a max geared tank, and still have absolutely zero intention of running random heroics even when this goes live.

Chain-farming random heroics will still be the least appealing way to obtain those mounts. Anyone who wants them can just go and solo-farm them (in much less time than it takes to do a heroic), minus all the headaches and repair bills of playing with randomly selected players. Flasks etc. aren't much of an incentive either, I would rather spend the gold or farm the herbs myself.
