Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times. Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

Not going to work for me. I only do 2 randoms with my 2 tank toons with my GF and her 2 healer toons. And since I do not want to do dungeons more than I need, I refuse to solo queue for these rewards. Especially when 1 of my tank toons has the Deathcharger's Reins and that's the only mount it needs because the toon is a DK. As for my gnome warrior. While the chance of Raven Lord is nice, I'm already grinding it solo and that's easier than doing a random heroic lol. Lets see. Spend 5 mins solo in Sethekk Halls or... spend 45 mins in a heroic dungeon with 4 strangers that I don't trust and low drop rate as well. As for the other goodies, I couldn't care less for them. So all in all, this new thing won't make me queue for the random dungeon any more than the 2 that I will do. BUT, I guess I won't qualify for this goodie bag because I have a personal healer. Oh wells.

Is it a joke? I was farming those mounts for ages. Is it so hard to create new mounts?!

    RIDICULOUS

    Hah!

I hope everyone is ready for people who are really terrible at tanking/healing to be showing up in their group.

It's also pretty funny that a group of people who already are rewarded with instant queues are now going to be rewarded with extra-loot.

This is not going to work... I'm not going to slough through 66 pages of posts to see if someone already said it so here's my two copper.

This new incentive will not magically make more tanks appear. It might make more bad tanks appear or people queueing as tank in their dps plate...
This new incentive will not make tanks and/or healers queue up more than once per day anyway. This just adds one more goodie to the prize everyone wants to get as fast as possible, and then they're gone.

Want to compensate people for long queue waits? Give them 5 (arbitrary number) points of bonus Valor per every 10 minutes in line. Whether this is solo or pre-made group.
If you queue up with a tank, you get in instantly, no bonus VP.
Queue up with a healer and spend 10m waiting regardles, you get 75VP for the instance.
Solo DPS waiting for almost 60 minutes for a pug to happen to them? Congratulations.
Of course, these VP should count towards the maximum allowed earnable. And declining a queue instantly resets the counter.

It still won't solve the long lines. It still won't motivate anyone to pug more than 1 heroic per day, if they dare pug at all. It WILL alleviate some of the 'pain' of waiting so long.
Probably the only thing that will make anyone roll through more than one heroic per day is the upcoming change of being allowed to just do 7 heroics for VP per week, whether spread out or all in one day.

Bah, just split the queue into tank, healer, DPS and scrub. With a guarantee of one actual DPSer who actually understands the concept, fights can be tuned to actually put some kind of responsibility on the DPS.

If I had a cookie for every time I've beaten "pay attention or die" fights like Ick, Garfrost, Slabhide, Devourer of Souls, Ozruk or Azil where all the DPS were dead within 20 seconds and we ended up two-manning it as tank+healer, I'd... well, I'd have a very large amount of cookies.

I have bad news for you, VPs are converted into JP when a new tier hits and you start again with 0 VPs

How is having your wait time drastically shortened so you can play the class you enjoy playing MORE, punishing you?

You assume the mounts will have a high degree of dropping, I would like to see the drop rate before making that assumption.

    oh arent you clever.

i hope they take it away so crying babies like you can wait 30 mins forever, i dont care for mounts or pets the only thing that interests me is the bit of extra gold and chance on flasks. so i dont care if its gone or if it stays.

so my new stance is please blizz remove it i can carry on tanking for my guild have nice easy runs and not have to worry about meeting idiots like you in dungeons, sure does sound great to me.

    I like this idea.

But to those people saying "I already have the mounts.", you can't possibly know which mounts are going to be in there... Those 3 were just an example, I expect nearly every rare Dungeon mount from Vanilla-WotLK to be in there (probably at around 1% chance for a mount)

I'm a mount collector, and most of the mounts I'm missing are the rare dungeon/raid drops. Which no amount of running can solve if you're unlucky, though I've got Chocobo :3

I quit playing WoW a couple months ago, so my main(a Tank) is undergeared, so I'd be afraid to queue because people would yell at me Even though I'm a good tank...
Most of the time I actually queue as dps(my offspec), since its ALOT less stress...

Wow. An actual solution for the perceived problem. (Note, perceived problem. I don't necessarily share the viewpoint of the qq'ing pure dps classes.)

I wholly support this. This is a way to not only get all current tanks queuing again for the mounts but also get all alt tanks in the queue as well. The upswing in tank "attendance" would be huge. And if it ends up that everyone is queuing with their tank the CTA would just switch to another role. This essentially would be the end-all be-all solution to long queue times. you know, aside from making tanking/healing actually as forgiving and fun as DPSing.

I'll continue to farm the mounts on my main, which i only have Anzu left to farm anyway, but this is stupid. "Here, you were going to tank or heal this instance anway so you get not only a short ton noexistent queue, but you'll also get the chance at all this stuff. Continue being that shining star and laugh at the dps that this does shit for. Bravo Blizz.

This is a good point, more people tanking from the start means better tanks at max level.

This sucks if you play as a couple, or as a pair of friends or whatever. I want to be able to queue with my tank boyfriend and NOT have him get punished for it, thanks. -_-

For those of us who are social and have friends, this is a horrible change. Now if I am a tank, I am penalized for queuing with my friends and family. I would be better off queuing with random people from random servers then with my guildmates.

Yes, great way to enhance the already hurting community of this MMO. I wonder how long before WoW is about as multiplayer as Warcraft 3.

Indeed. They should allow to bring at least one friend. I'd rather take at least one sure 15-20k dps than taking the risk of being stuck with 3-4k terribads for an hour or more.

so wait why should this benefit the people who are in the que COMPARED TO DPS for a fraction of the time? jesus christ. ya its not like dps dont have to wait for fucking ever to get into a heroic my god.

He won't be punished for it, if he wants to go for specific rewards he will need to do things a specific way, for some reason I can't see you complaining that you can't get the 100,000 Honor kills achievement by doing dungeons...

This is not an incentive to tanks already in the queue, it states in the first post it's an incentive for tanks who are not in the queue to jump in and get rewarded for doing so.

I love how many tanks pretend that their job is somehow ridiculously hard and so feel that they deserve these rewards, totally ignoring the fact that, apart from some specific fights which are difficult to tank, the majority of the time they just stand there spamming their highest threat abilities on bosses while the DPS are the ones who actually have to do things on the encounter
  1. Danimalx23's Avatar
The reward to the DPS is a shorter queue time. It's not like us tanks got together one day in the Dalaran Sewers and plotted to create a tank shortage untill the union stepped up and got us better rewards..

Hopefully more people will try tanking and things will start to even out, but by design, there's always going to be an inherent imbalance when the group comp of a 5 man is 3 DPS to 1 Tank 1 Healer, there's no other way around it.
