I would guess that at least one of the ilevels of gear is bought for currency earned in the new daily area - didn't the preview of the Hyjal Dalies mention something about "a whole new teir of gear" or something?

may have been mentioned, but looks like the craftables will be using chaos orbs still, had blizzard commented on this at all? I would assume they would be using a new type of crafting orb.

I seem to recall them saying that each tier of bosses would have increasingly harder hit caps as opposed to LK where only boss level mattered and all LK bosses were effectively L83 for hit cap. You may need more hit than you think.

Yes, it likely shows the hardmode content is being discarded.

Blizzard has been moderately consistent this expansion: each tier of content (new ZA/ZG not-withstanding) is balanced around an ilevel ~13 below that of the loot which drops from that content. 359->378 isn't too extreme, tier 1.5 of a jump. Almost certainly, the current Heroic-raiders who have several of the bosses on farm, will already be beyond geared for the normal Firelands raid. People who are just starting HM's, will be at the correct gear level for beginning Firelands.

Many of the HM content simply requires too much coordination for the vast majority of guilds, with few exceptions. Trying to ram casuals through that content at ilevel 359 is still going to end in a lot of extremely unhappy customers: ergo, the HM's won't be required for gear progression.

The interesting question is whether or not Firelands raids will be doable by guilds with ~350 average ilevel. If that winds up being the case, then the entire current tier of raids will be dumped; however, I don't think that's Blizzard's intention. That said, I think how they itemize the new VP vendor will ultimately determine the progression path for the average guild who's still beating their heads on many of the normal mode raids.
