Statistics: Dragon Soul and Firelands
Patch 4.2 brought us Firelands over six months ago, and in that time roughly 12% of our sample of level 85 characters completed Normal difficulty Firelands. Patch 4.3 was released just one and a half months ago, during the holiday, and already 30% of the sample has killed Deathwing in any difficulty while only 4% has killed Deathwing on Normal or Heroic.

Keep in mind this sample includes many alt characters and many players have multiple characters, so there is no way to know for sure if more people are raiding. However, we do know that more characters are raiding now than raided during Firelands.

This time around, the overall sample is around 6 million characters and the active character sample is around 4.4 million. If you are interested in these type of statistics or want to see other information, let us know in the comments!

First we take a look at the overall population, including every level 85 character that has been active since Patch 4.3 went live. Only 4% of the population managed to do Normal difficulty Dragon Soul so far, and 34% completed it on LFR or higher difficulty.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Normal difficulty Deathwing achievement. The holiday caused a slight slowdown in the past few weeks, but people started earning it constantly on the first week.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Raid Finder or greater difficulty Deathwing achievement. You can see the weekly growth starts out high and is now rapidly decreasing, as everyone and their alts are have easily completed the raid.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Normal difficulty Firelands completion achievement. You can see where the Hotfix took effect and greatly increased the amount of kills, which are now leveling off as players don't have a reason to go back.

Now we narrow our sample to just characters who have killed Deathwing on Raid Finder or greater difficulty. For this sample, 13% of characters have done it on Normal or Heroic difficulty, and 87% of characters did it on Raid Finder difficulty.

Yes. I can confirm that we are fixing that issue in 4.3.2.

You will see the note on it in the next update to the 4.3.2 PTR patch notes. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

WoW No Longer Compatible with Windows 2000
In preparation for the upcoming release of Mists of Pandaria, updates to World of Warcraft will no longer support Microsoft Windows 2000. Microsoft ceased support for this version of their operating system in 2010. Players still using Windows 2000 are encouraged to upgrade prior to the release of Mists of Pandaria. That would be 1.25 million *characters* not players. Its highly likely that committed raiders have at least an alt (or 2 or 3) that they'd gear through LFR as well. So the total # of players that completed the content is even less.

10 million active subscriptions is a highly contentious number, and also reflects all of their asia player base. My guess is that alot of people have a paid sub but stopped playing, or play so casually that raiding is never an issue. Also, some people play exclusively for the PvP component.

FWIW, raiding isn't the draw that it used to be. I raided through late vanilla, all of TBC and all the way to LC (never got him 25 man, only 10). Can't be bothered to raid anymore... bar is reset every few months, encounters are repetitive and uninteresting, and there's better ways to have fun IMHO. And I can't be bothered with LFR, since i'd only be doing it for the gear...and i'm not raiding anymore, so why use LFR to get gear to raid normal?

It amazes me Win2k was still supported up to this day, hardware drivers aren't even compatible with it anymore and haven't been so for a good while; oh well, farewell Win2k, I liked you enough a decade ago (while waiting for XP to get SP2 heh).

Oh and, perhaps I just haven't been following the news close enough (I don't currently play the game), what is "LFR difficulty" exactly? An easier setting when a raid is accessed through the LFR tool?

Out of the 6ish million sample size of level 85 characters, less than that being active since 4.3. Don't ever look at absolute numbers here, only relative.

Never mind all the statistics... The thing that amazes me the most is that people still use windows 2000.

Unfortually I don't have enough time for schedule. So LFR is the only reason why I still play this game. It's not that challenging true, but I have fun. I'm running it on many alts and I'm always happy to win something!

In addition, I can now see the story!!

    Lore is important to me.

Hahah you gotta love that the 2nd most chosen option is "The lack of any other better game to play" Just shows how bad things have become.

Then IMHO, the author should really only post percentage.. It's very misleading when you only poll a small sample of characters in WoW.

    ---------- Post added 2012-01-10 at 02:25 PM ----------

Also.. less than 50% is still pretty amusing.. Like I said, LFR is just faceroll easy.. You literally can't fail if you can even get to lvl 85.

And Blizzard denies the problem again saying LFR works great and many people likes it. Well then Blizzard.... It´s good how you listen to the people that don´t have time to play the game, but in the same time you piss on the people that put some effort in it!

LFR should just be called RNG mode because the hardest part about it is rolling on loot.

For what it's worth. My very causal raiding guild was 5/8 before the holiday break. We were on a two week break and then we missed the first week of January because of MT and a healer left for swtor. So we are rebuilding a bit. Does this mean normal LFR is too hard? Maybe. It's really difficult to determine to what affect the holidays had on everybody. Frankly I would like the nerf. WoW for me is a social experience first. But it's all good. inb4neckbeards

Hmmm, there was no option for "non-combat pets" in the What Keeps You Playing poll... What? Why are you looking at me like that?

    How was your sample obtained?

I thought you were still working with the entire population. What sample did you narrow?

I like this, I think they should do this for LFD, even let you select it, casual players can get together and pug through a system and hardcore players can earn better rewards, it's a beautiful solution to the problem of casual v hardcore.

The statistics show that what Blizzard set out to achieve is being achieved. LFR was designed to allow more of the player base to see the end game content - it has achieved that goal. Not sure how anyone thinks these statistics prove there is a problem with LFR.Biggest surprise for me was that WoW still supported Windows 2000. Can't believe people still use that archaic operation system. Get with the times people! Quit being cheap asses!

Oh and I forgot to add - useless poll is useless. I'm 100% positive that people who don't play (aka the forum trolls who've been whining) also voted.
