Statistics: Dragon Soul and Firelands
Patch 4.2 brought us Firelands over six months ago, and in that time roughly 12% of our sample of level 85 characters completed Normal difficulty Firelands. Patch 4.3 was released just one and a half months ago, during the holiday, and already 30% of the sample has killed Deathwing in any difficulty while only 4% has killed Deathwing on Normal or Heroic.

Keep in mind this sample includes many alt characters and many players have multiple characters, so there is no way to know for sure if more people are raiding. However, we do know that more characters are raiding now than raided during Firelands.

This time around, the overall sample is around 6 million characters and the active character sample is around 4.4 million. If you are interested in these type of statistics or want to see other information, let us know in the comments!

First we take a look at the overall population, including every level 85 character that has been active since Patch 4.3 went live. Only 4% of the population managed to do Normal difficulty Dragon Soul so far, and 34% completed it on LFR or higher difficulty.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Normal difficulty Deathwing achievement. The holiday caused a slight slowdown in the past few weeks, but people started earning it constantly on the first week.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Raid Finder or greater difficulty Deathwing achievement. You can see the weekly growth starts out high and is now rapidly decreasing, as everyone and their alts are have easily completed the raid.

Next we look at how quickly people earned the Normal difficulty Firelands completion achievement. You can see where the Hotfix took effect and greatly increased the amount of kills, which are now leveling off as players don't have a reason to go back.

Now we narrow our sample to just characters who have killed Deathwing on Raid Finder or greater difficulty. For this sample, 13% of characters have done it on Normal or Heroic difficulty, and 87% of characters did it on Raid Finder difficulty.

Yes. I can confirm that we are fixing that issue in 4.3.2.

You will see the note on it in the next update to the 4.3.2 PTR patch notes. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Posts like this make me wonder? LFR is pissing on you? Really? I would ask you how but I am pretty sure I can guess most of the response. LFR lets more people raid and see the content. The hardcore still have access to the best gear and the ability to champion themselves as the best of the best by beating the content on the highest level. WoW is a game and I can't stress that enough. It is individuals like you that have made it something much more twisted inn your mind that sadden me. If WoW had not evolved, taken chances, made changes, as well as admit when it messed up know one would be playing. I have the time to play and have raided hardcore. You see I have a life and WoW being a game fits into it. It should not need dominate it. I simply do not enjoy the drama and bull crap that goes along with being in those most hardcore of guilds. Raid finder does not take away from your WoW experience and if you think it does well... sorry Blizzard and "those who don't have time to play the game" are hardly your biggest problem.

Pretty much sounds like a big "Even if it's not perfect, it's better than the rest." This speaks actually reflects well on WoW and badly on other games that have tried to take the crown.

Honestly, who wouldn't go an play a better game when it comes around?

LFR is a great idea, they just should have added a normal and heroic difficulty to it along with 10 and 25 man options... and yes I understand that LFR is only a tool meant to let more people see the endgame, but its not like endgame content is difficult, the difficulty is getting groups going.

It's not suprising though that SWTOR has had more concurrent users in NA/EU then wow lately even with the massive sub advantage. It seems like a lot of people just haven't bothered to remove there monthly subs or just never bought cataclysm and messing around at lower level content.

I thought you were still working with the entire population. What sample did you narrow?
    Armory API.

The entire sample population narrowed to the criteria listed.

The average wow players are pathetic at raiding after seeing this.

You lack an option involving addons, programming addons, e.g. That's mainly what keeps me interested at least.

Oh it won't shut up anyone. They'll keep spouting nonsense about how super-duper "hard" Vanilla and TBC were. Hopefully, Blizz will make an optional raid encounter in MoP that requires endless attunement grind(s), several hours of trash and requires resist gear (which takes weeks to farm). Then all the badass, nostalgia WoW players can start having fun again.

And those self-proclaimed "elite veterans" wouldn't even attempt to clear that raid unless it rewards with gear with astronomic stats. So much for "oooh there were so many things to do outside of the capital cities, the social aspect was much better, we used to play just to have fun"

where is the option for "I don't play but I come to MMO from time to time to see what I don't miss and D3 updates!"

    WOORD !

I think this LFR tool is an elegant solvation for casuals, its way too easy for regular players - but hey - who cares, there is still the normal difficulty, which may be also kinda easy, but unless people have cleared the heroic content, or almost cleared i see no reason to complain.

This game got away from what made it great.. making items hard to achieve allowing the players that were good enough to get them feel like they were superior over the players that couldn't... now everything is handed to everyone and as soon as anything in this game gets anywhere near challenging, they Nerf it into the ground.. As soon as panda expansion comes out I am done. This game is on a constant decline.

"Good enough"??? Did any of you whiners even raid in Vanilla or TBC? Most of the rare items/experiences were nothing more than epic time-sinks. Hell, even the PvP titles in Vanilla required nothing more than having endless hours to devote the game. If you are truly competitive at WoW, skill matters more now than it did in the "glorious" past of 2004-2008. My guess is you, like many posters, want WoW to return to a huge Vanilla grind, where all that is required to succeed is tons of free time. Perhaps SWTOR is the game for you. Like the great John Adams said, "Combat logs are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."
