MMO-Champion - WoW Loses 1.1 Million Subscibers, Down to 9.1 Million
Don't miss Mists of Pandaria Beta - Build 15929 from earlier today!

WoW Loses 1.1M Subscribers, Down to 9.1M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 1,100,000 subscribers last quarter, bringing us down to 9.1 million players. Some things they made note of on the call are below.

Notes
  • 16.9 million Battle.net users logged in last month, up from 10 million just 3 months ago.
  • 10 million D3 copies sold, with 1.2 million of those from the Annual Pass. It was the best-selling PC game for the first six months of 2012.
  • Most of the WoW Subscription losses were from the East.
  • Losses are from people playing Diablo 3 and leaving for other things to do until the new expansion.
  • Mists of Pandaria will utilize TV and online ads leading up to the launch.
  • The China launch Mists of Pandaria will launch as soon as possible, not likely in Q3.
  • 4.7 million people watched the event at MLG for Heart of the Swarm.

Contributing factors to the lower subscribers were likely the launch of Diablo III in the quarter, which provided consumers with an alternative gaming experience to World of Warcraft (although Diablo III has not yet launched in China), as well as the lack of new content patches in all geographies resulting in less overall game play. Looking forward, Blizzard Entertainment expects to release World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria™ on September 25, 2012, which will deliver new game content in all regions that is expected to further appeal to the gaming community (with availability in mainland China to be announced at a later date).

The ship is sinking but everyone at Blizzard is looking at the mast because it's still above the water...so sad.

Not that surprising considering we've been stuck on DS for so long and with D3s release. Most will be back for Mists, just wait.

can people stop assuming all the subs pay 15 a month? they even said most of the losses where in the East and they dont pay subs there. its a huge loss but please stop assuming all the "subs" pay 15 a month like we do in the west

I know they have lost the subscribers because of lack of content for the last six months. I mean, hell, even I unsubscribed.

But 1.1 million still kinda hurts. Ouch.

We'll see a huge return when MoP hits. I'm guessing at least half of those.

That does not even consider new players that Pandas and Pet Battles might attract. Finally, maybe, just maybe, MOP will be popular in China.

maybe if DS wasn't so terrible they wouldn't have lost so much... blame the devs who reused 90% of the models and made such a bad raid

oh and it didn't help that it lasted for almost a year.... same thing happened at the end of wrath... so many ppl left

mop will bring players back but if blizzard continues with these types of raids more will leave (although from the looks of it mop raids look much better than DS)

I am not longer subscribed, and won't be until MoP is released.
Figuring this goes for a lot of people.

WoW loses some/no subs over the past year+ --> People rage and claim WoW is dying

WoW loses 1.1 million subs in one quarter --> People are much more reasonable and realistic as to the reasons for the drop than usual

I'm confused and scared but enjoying the thoughtful comments on both sides :P

I just resubbed, looking forward to MoP. Alot of people will do the same when we get closer and closer to MoP.

I'm surprised more people didn't take a break before MoP. All my friends took a break during LK ending and BC ending, coming back for the pre-launch patch. Only reason we didn't see a decrease in playerbase back then was probably because a lot of ppl were still joining.

No one for Blizzard to blame for this but themselves, and I don't mean cause of D3.

They very well know that this is what happens when you don't release new content for 9+ months... and to make matters worse, the content they have released is extremely easy and PvP isn't balanced at all.

And to be rewarded for our lack of content for the last 9 months, we get to wait an extra month after MoP is released to get all the 5.0 raid content! And somehow people are happy about that.... blows my mind.

We should be proud! 'We' lost more subscribers in one quarter then SWTOR has in total! Guess that also tells us not everyone left for SWTOR

GW2 is on the way, might lose some to that, even though it's F2P so no worries to the ones who'd leave for economical reasons. MoP will arrive soon and that'll bring a bunch of people. First Annual Passes to end is the 26th of October, so some might leave then but if they do it's cuz they don't like MoP, all the raids and such will be out by then so that's no argument.

Yeah, I'm thinking we'll approach 10 mil. again, but no matter what, WoW'll still have the highest amount of subs out there anyway. Nothing to worry about for a while for our old boy, Warcraft. =)

Most of those left because of the casual Wrath and Cata gameplay...what makes you think they'll come back for panda land? Blizzard betrayed their original audience long ago, they will never come back.

AP is no make or break for Blizzard. its 15-20% of the player base. most who are loyal to Blizzard. that maybe a few 100k loss but no way over a million moer.

What's it like having psychic powers and knowing why people leave the game? :P
