MMO-Champion - WoW Loses 1.1 Million Subscibers, Down to 9.1 Million
Don't miss Mists of Pandaria Beta - Build 15929 from earlier today!

WoW Loses 1.1M Subscribers, Down to 9.1M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 1,100,000 subscribers last quarter, bringing us down to 9.1 million players. Some things they made note of on the call are below.

Notes
  • 16.9 million Battle.net users logged in last month, up from 10 million just 3 months ago.
  • 10 million D3 copies sold, with 1.2 million of those from the Annual Pass. It was the best-selling PC game for the first six months of 2012.
  • Most of the WoW Subscription losses were from the East.
  • Losses are from people playing Diablo 3 and leaving for other things to do until the new expansion.
  • Mists of Pandaria will utilize TV and online ads leading up to the launch.
  • The China launch Mists of Pandaria will launch as soon as possible, not likely in Q3.
  • 4.7 million people watched the event at MLG for Heart of the Swarm.

Contributing factors to the lower subscribers were likely the launch of Diablo III in the quarter, which provided consumers with an alternative gaming experience to World of Warcraft (although Diablo III has not yet launched in China), as well as the lack of new content patches in all geographies resulting in less overall game play. Looking forward, Blizzard Entertainment expects to release World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria™ on September 25, 2012, which will deliver new game content in all regions that is expected to further appeal to the gaming community (with availability in mainland China to be announced at a later date).

Lol, not at all unexpected considering things. What's annoying is all the wamps calling it the end of WoW. It's not even close and this should be plain to see for anyone with even a hint of intellect.

Firstly why are people saying that because people quit wow they will go running to guild wars 2? That doesn't even make sense.

Secondly its towards the end of the expansion. I know atleast 7 guilds on my realm who cleared 8/8hc back in march who have simply stopped playing till MOP.

Lack of content overall this expansion has led to this. I mean 2 short tiers in general and a piss poor 4.1 patch might have something to do with this.

I stopped playing apart from raids but I play other games and am certainly not going to play a new mmo just because some idiots on a forum claim its the best thing since sliced bread.......

I am still shocked that people are still farming Dragon Soul every week. Even my guild is doing it and asks me to come in and help. I log in maybe 3 times a week for a total of 15 minutes altogether. There is still plenty for me to do by getting achievements, but I rather have a new setting in order to be motivated.

Because those people are GW2 fans that WANT this to be true.

Nice job avoiding the question. Yes it says it in the main post but where is the info? Where are the numbers of the people who quit for D3? Where are the numbers for people coming back when MoP releases? I'm not subbed at the moment, do I count as one of those coming back? 'cos I'm not.

Wait, so they say GW2 won't have an impact on subs because it has no sub itself....But Diablo3 (A subless game) is the reason for this drop?

Im almost sure they will add a second annual pass just before this one expires on october 26. May be they will offer acces to project TITAN alpha, who knows....

AP is no make or break for Blizzard. its 15-20% of the player base. most who are loyal to Blizzard. that maybe a few 100k loss but no way over a million moer.
AP is not all loyal base some of it is and some were people who fell the the appeal of shiny new mount and thinking they would save money getting Diablo 3 for free. I know 2 people under AP one is a Blizz diehard, the other got AP but stopped playing months ago

We know most of the subscriber loss was in the East.

We know Diablo 3 just came out recently and is popular in the East (Don't let all the whiners on the US/EU forums taint you)

We know Blizzard has the ability to see if those former subscribers still have active playtime on D3.

Thus, they connected the dots. It's the nature of data and statistics. You can dispute it if you want, but they have more data then you that they can actually use to come to those conclusions.

I bought GW2, and didn't unsub from wow. Why ? Because there's no extra money on GW2, I just bought it and there it is, for me to play when there's nothing to do in WoW

ITT: Tons and tons of blizzard-bashers and WoW haters. Why are you people even here? I don't get it.

^This. Gotta love all the people claiming that the report is "just loose statements" or "has no data to back it up"...so Blizzard is just lying to their stockholders? Yep...makes sense.

I realize it's fun to hate Activision/Blizzard for being the big evil corporation but is the competition among subscription and F2P MMO's any better?

Warner Bros. (Turbine), EA(Bioware), Sony, etc.

The only "little guy" I can think of is Trion.
Actually Trion had a huge succes with Rift

Not only that they had the best mmo of the year at 2011, also that they are actually pushing out content faster than any other mmo out there! + that they are huge profit of the game

Trion really gives value for the money, so if ur dead tired of wow, try rift with a few friends! great game and soon thier next expansion is comming out!

Diablo 3 has nothing to do with the sub loss rofl.

Being a mediocre expansion with little to no updates, is.

How "Mad" do I look now?
If Blizzard took a shit on your chest, you would love it.
Seriously, this over the top blind love for a company that doesn't give a shit about YOU, is unhealthy.

Well I think this is a wakeup call for Blizzard.
No doubt MoP will bring back the loss, but I mean you just can't expect players to play this old game anymore if they don't get new content patches for over 6months.

So holy shit that is alot. Next obvious question..wtf are the Chinese doing other then WoW? Is there another mmo out there I have not heard of?

Lying? Nope. Sugar coating? Yes. You sugar coat bad news to your share holders as much as you possibly can.

One of the reasons blizzard quoted.

It's fun to read comments of how "MoP will bring them all back", yet during the same quarter as MoPs release, we have Guild Wars 2 being released. Last month we had The Secret World. Either during this quarter, or the next one, SWTOR will be going Free-to-play.

TL;DR: There are plenty of alternatives to WoW these days. WoW's days as the "King of MMOs" has long since passed, and WoW's subscription numbers have peaked. No way will they ever return to the same numbers they once had (12 million+)
Oh its quite possible that WoW will never reach 12+ million again... but will any other MMO even get near what WoW is at NOW (so called "dead")? Likely not in the near future. Guild Wars will die down after the initial leveling phase. Once people are no longer being rewarded with character power they will quit. Not saying its a bad thing that you don't gain character power after a point, its just that it takes a different kind of person to enjoy that. Guild Wars 2 will be a great success (I hope to play it myself someday), but it will slow down and not continue growing for 5+ years like WoW did.

Source? Credibility? Or are you just another person on the internet who thinks their opinion is fact?

Regardless. Most losses were from the East. It's the end of an expansion, where subs are expected to drop. I'm not sure why anyone's particularly surprised.
