Don't miss Mists of Pandaria Beta - Build 15929 from earlier today!

WoW Loses 1.1M Subscribers, Down to 9.1M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 1,100,000 subscribers last quarter, bringing us down to 9.1 million players. Some things they made note of on the call are below.

Notes
  • 16.9 million Battle.net users logged in last month, up from 10 million just 3 months ago.
  • 10 million D3 copies sold, with 1.2 million of those from the Annual Pass. It was the best-selling PC game for the first six months of 2012.
  • Most of the WoW Subscription losses were from the East.
  • Losses are from people playing Diablo 3 and leaving for other things to do until the new expansion.
  • Mists of Pandaria will utilize TV and online ads leading up to the launch.
  • The China launch Mists of Pandaria will launch as soon as possible, not likely in Q3.
  • 4.7 million people watched the event at MLG for Heart of the Swarm.

Contributing factors to the lower subscribers were likely the launch of Diablo III in the quarter, which provided consumers with an alternative gaming experience to World of Warcraft (although Diablo III has not yet launched in China), as well as the lack of new content patches in all geographies resulting in less overall game play. Looking forward, Blizzard Entertainment expects to release World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria™ on September 25, 2012, which will deliver new game content in all regions that is expected to further appeal to the gaming community (with availability in mainland China to be announced at a later date).

    Hahahahahahahaha

Sorry, had to get that out.

No wonder really, months and months of no new content, the thought of DS just makes me cut my wrists, combined with the previous useless patches (Zul remake), There is just nothing left to do. Hasn't been for a long time...

this is a shame... but it has been their own doing... really hoping MOP turns things around

wow... I always said they'll have a drop, but such a huge one was unexpected.

Also next quarter is the june-july-august, so will also be a drop as people just took a break before MoP. Only the fourth quarter will have a raise.

does someone still play this? :O though u all went to another games that have something new and are free...

I'd say that is, in fact, unexpected and what the Annual Pass was supposed to prevent. Imagine what it'd be without the AP.

Presently dead, and dead for good are different. It's okay to say that for the moment. Still, over a million leaving... Whoa, that's scaring. I wasn't expecting that. Althought from my raiding group of almost 20 only 3 still logging in. The others left due to disagreements, and quit after not finding another group to fit in.

It is sad that WoW lost 1.1mil subs.. but i will always stay loyal to the game, wow player till the end!

As a WoW lover, I'm not exactly surprised.

DS has been out 8 months, everyone and their dog has killed Deathwing so of course people will quit for that. D3 has no doubt taken a few subs away too.

Lets see how Q3 goes, MoP is released but there's no more Annual Pass. My prediction is 10.5 million total.

meh still Number 1 in mmo market.
let the haters commence in utterly pointless flaming/discussion. (I agree tho that the content was lackluster in cata, so far they have learned much from their mistakes from what i've experienced in beta)
Mists of Pandaria is going to be a very special experience which I don't want to miss.
    gg.

I wonder how the numbers are fairing with Diablo 3? WoW is 7 years old now and had its greatest moments and shortcomings in a long period, while Diablo 3 seemed to rushed through that process in barely 3 months... Blizzard should be concerned, fo sho.

A lot of people I know (including myself) aren't even going to buy MoP. They're just cuttin their 1 month loss and getting out. I realize this isn't everyone though.

Then you have the influx of people coming back, so maybe it will stay stagnant. Only time will tell though lol

I doubt this has anything to do with WoW and more to do with Diablo 3, which would have played a major factor on this particular report. People were more than bored of Dragon Soul back during the last report.

I think alot of people are just blind to the fact that WOW is WOW no matter how you look at it. Its lost alot of its fizzle and only people who have no other options in the world hold on to the fact that WoW will be eternal.

I don't see MOP stirring a buzz for people as much as WOTLK and BC did. The new Xpac will keep people content for the next 3-4 months after release and Blizz will see a bigger drop in numbers when the hype is gone. Asian theme play along with Panads will not cut it.

No offense, but you're mad if you think MoP will bring 6 million people. It might bring 2... and even those might not last.

LOL you mean that's gonna lose you another 6 million lmfao.

Thank god for China, statistically speaking out of a billion people you'll have enough to make up for your loses of everyone else in the world lmfao.

game in decline, probably because its braindead easy 90% of the content has been made obsolete (not just raids either). Q3 will probably see a loss just as big since MOP will bring the same difficulty "curve" and playstyle.

Not this shit again, inc millions of trolls who think wow is "dead" and forget the fact that the biggest competitor subswise has under 1 million subs....
Next conference call is right when eveyone has just gotten into mop, we will prolly see a 3-4 million bump in numbers then.

1.1 million is ALOT to recover. That's going to take some time for the numbers to hit pre-cata.

I was kinda worried how the numbers will be like without Blizzard offering some sort of stimulus package. Last quarter they revamped the scroll of resurrection to bring people back offering the farm. 4th QTR last year was the annual pass which still resulted in a loss despite new content and Christmas.
  1. Freedom4u2's Avatar
Once annual pass turns off, I believe they'll lose another 500/600k customers. Guild Wars 2 is coming over the top, with an incredibly positive feedback from the community. MoP sounds really not serious to the old players who were used to the whole undead/demons feeling of the game. They're targeting a new audience, but they'll sure lose those who liked the old WoW.

Anyway, the game is 7 years old.
