Ghostcrawler confirmed the news on the official forums.

We just came off of a great BlizzCon. We had so many different games to talk about, and we were thrilled at the reception of Warlords of Draenor. It was great to meet or reconnect with so many of you. I love BlizzCon dearly, which makes it so hard to tell you that this will be my last one, or at least my last one up on stage. An opportunity has come my way, and I have made the very tough decision to move on from Blizzard.

I wanted to thank all of you for being a part of this grand quest. I have said a hundred times that having passionate gamers, including the angry ones, is a far better place to be than having a community that doesn’t care. You all care. Like us, you want the game to be the best that it can be. So I ask you to keep on providing your feedback. I promise (and I rarely promise!) that the developers care very much about what you have to say.

I’ll be out there, and I can’t imagine it will be that hard to find me.

Hugs,
Ghostcrawler

P.S. No, you can’t have a pony. Or a moose. Or a mantis shrimp. Or a tardigrade. Or a crab. Keep trying though.

P.P.S. I play a Holy Priest.

Some people lack the common decency to appreciate the things GC did right and how much of an impact he has had on WoW. I wish people could swallow their pride and say "Thank you for everything, good and bad. I wish you the best on your future endeavors."

    Well, fuck.
So now WoD will have 50% of unplayable specs?

He'll be missed, but whatever he's moving on to will be the better for having him on board, as I'm sure Blizzard will find someone suitable to take up Ghostcrawler's (albeit heavy) mantle. Good luck Greg, and thanks for everything you've done!

I will admit, between Ghostcrawler leaving, and flying mounts being taken out for the first patch, I am considering trying out the game again, I guess we'll have to wait and see if any other improvements are made. Blizz turned the most popular MMO into a game that's only fun for beginners, but there may still be hope left lol.

Goodbye to the father of LFD, LFR and the playstyle of 'sit in capitals waiting for queues/summons'.

RIP the seamless connection between Blizzard and its community. Things will never be the same. Ghostcrawler has done a great thing.

Wow, so much ignorance in this thread.

I'm willing to bet that 99% of the things you people are bitching about would've changed no matter who the lead designer was. The game wouldn't have frozen itself in amber in 2008 and refused to adapt just because the big evil GC didn't come along. Use your damn brains.

There's already a thread where they're trying to invent a conspiracy retroactively. Gold, just gold.

It's amazing how many people here have such an intricate working knowledge of his job responsibilities and the inner-workings of a Blizzard career path.

It was nice of him to bid farewell, though I would have really applauded him if he just disappeared.

^this, so much this.. people need to stop it, and grow up. frankly, he's brought the game to a wider audience, with his team and the great ideas the staff have put together.

I'm actually worried where WoW will go from here, and if it will ever appeal to me again. (WOD doesn't interest me much, with no class or race)

Thanks a lot GC. Best of luck in your new company. I'm sure you'll thrive with a passionate player base there as well.

I'm sad to see him go. Throughout my time here, Ghostcrawler has been a staple. We always knew where to aim our anger and frustration when our classes were nerfed into oblivion, but we also knew that he was strong enough to take it, and dish it back out in turn without it phasing him. We will all miss you, Greg. Best of luck wherever life takes you.

Meh. I was just saying what a lot of people were thinking is all. I personally can't say I hate the guy, but he has a terrible reputation. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

    Indeed. He will be missed.

Hopefully the game will continue to improve, rather than sliding back to the 'sit in capitals spamming trade for groups' playstyle. Quite like the current playstyle of 'get out in the world and do stuff while queueing'. Just wish the Timeless Isle wasn't so dull.

The best news for WoW were kept for after Blizzcon. Thank God. At last! We might even see wow becoming interesting again.

    It upsets me.

It upsets me that the one guy who tried to connect to his audience the most is leaving. It upsets me even more that I feel that, somewhere along his decision-making, he left partly because he'd had enough of being the face-man for Blizzard and having to put up with so much shit from the fans who ultimately believe -- even to this day -- that he was the sole proprietor of what happens to WoW.

Even now people bash GC and say "good riddance" and "now WoW will be good again". It's a damn shame that retarded people like them like to sit in blissful ignorance and think that everything Blizz done was in the name of Ghostcrawler, not even realising -- or perhaps WANT to realize -- that everything Blizz had done has been because of a collective agreement, and not because of one man.

Ultimately, I give my best regards to Greg and hope that wherever he goes next he'll find a better fanbase to talk with. And I feel absolutely bad for the person who will take his place. My guess it being Tom Chilton.

And you're just one of the many idiots I'm referring to.

I think most people did. Not all, but most of the responses I've read were like this.

    FINALLY!

Now maybe we can have someone who actually has decent gaming experience instead of a degree in marine biology.
