It actually usually wins the best expansion polls now, though you wouldnt have known it from threads at the time.
I think people just do the whole the grass is greener thing/ follow the crowd >.<

Yeah I'm surprised how short some peoples memories are...wotlk had so many whiners it was unreal, blizzard even tried to change from the wotlk model in cata by making things harder/ require CC because of the sheer quantity of people saying wotlk was too easy, then you have polls today saying wotlk was the best thing since sliced bread for some reason :S

Kind of sad really. This was an opportunity for people to show Blizzard that they can't get away with giving the players no content. This will just enable Blizzard.

Most common reasons I've seen given for the fans was the richness of the lore. They loved it in spite of poor Heroic Dungeon encounter design because the Art Assets, Lore/Storyline, and engagement with previous games was at its strongest. In short, you're looking at the wrong data to explain people's love for that Xpac.

I don't understand what you're saying. Can you read a graph? They've lost 36.6% of their subscribers all told. That's over a third.

with 5 mill being gold farmers, that's not so good. It'll pump back up in 7 months when the XPac comes out.

Actually it was based on other comments over the years on mmochampion about people saying they don't care about lore/ the story/ characters and only care about game play/ raiding >.<

Well obviously people are happy with no content otherwise they wouldn't stay subbed, yes i wish it would have been lower to encourage blizzard to give us more, but we are wrong

I was expecting more to be honest. Maybe if/when WoD hits the subs will be close to 6.8-7 million. When WoD launches maybe subs will get up to 7.8 -8 million. then promptly keep declining.

To explain further growth is as anyone can expect a population grows when resources increase or in this case a game grows in popularity.
Overshoot is where you grow past your resources to an unsustainable level, quite common, and this occured during wrath in my opinion. The amount of subscribers that the game had reached was just unrealistic. There was no way they could keep everyone happy.
Next we have stability. This is where something reaches a point of equilibrium. I think we are getting there in wow now.
Then decline, which is slow decrease until cease of existence.

Doubling subs from BC -> Wrath was always a bit crazy. Now we are beginning to drop back down to BC like numbers and now the amount of subs going down is slowing down. Over the next year you may even see growth without influence from WoD. However you will never see growth like we did from BC-> Wrath. Lets all enjoy what I believe is going to be wows stability phase.
    Optimistic ...

Some if us think it's in the decline phrase already.

WoW's player base has never been all that stable. There is a very high turn over rate. In the past, they manage to attract more new players than bleed players per unit time, hence the growth.

Not sure if WoW is losing more players than "usual", but I don't see them as having the same ability to get new players as before - the game is old; it looks like something from the late PS2 era, that's not going to impress the generation that grew up on the PS3/360's HDR, per-pixel lit graphics - saying what you want about graphics, good graphics sell - and with the PS4 taking over ...

Did you see the nice graph he posted?

    "Down to 7.6m subscribers."
Apparently it's not as easy as one would think to find sales figures for games, but according to one source the #4 selling video game of 2013 sold about the same number of copies. So only three games managed to sell significantly more copies in all of 2013 than WoW has subs right now.
Combined with the fact that they really have had the same amount of subs over about the last year, WoW's going strong. Not as strong as it used to be, but still, very strong.

He's talking about since last quarter. You're attempting to take 10 years and apply it to now.

When that new expansion hits, and it being catered only to people who do nothing but raid and want no one else to have gear, they're going to see an even bigger drop.

Applying that same logic, you could also say they've had an around 3000% increase in subscribers.

What? There is plenty in all aspects for this expansion. PVP is getting a major overhaul, garrisons etc. Chill out grumpy cat, it's not even in beta yet.

We are down to end-of-vanilla numbers. How can anyone really expect that this game will go back to 2010 subs? This game is bleeding subs because it's old and that is how it is for all old products. If you look at MoP start all you can expect at WoD launch is a 1 million jump that will drop back after 3 months.

We (non-raiders) are not exactly on their radar. They've never really had to create extra content to keep the non-raiders happy. Even the raiders want big expansions with lots of content. But when they push too far in favor of raiders (see Cata), a lot of us leave until they tone it down. Sure they're going to have a sub drop before and after WoD, but as long as they can nerf the content after a few months and restore flying when it starts to hurt their bottom line, I don't ever believe these arguments will matter to them.

Per usual. People have gotten what they want out of the expac and are taking a break until WoDs.

to be fair the most popular game doesn't necessarily have to mean it's the best
