Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

Here you have it, people vote with their wallets. Is everyone happy now? Or are there still people coming up with lame excuses and are still preaching how great WoD is and we got plenty of content to do?

Mythic dungeons and timewalking aren't going to stop this drop. Maybe some people will come back for Tanaan Jungle and Hellfire Citadel but since you finish content within a week these days that won't last very long.

Slow patches killed momentum in an otherwise compelling story.
Garrisons require a ton of time to upkeep-crafting for its pros fails the economy for one reason: soul bound time-dependent reagents. People want to be able to get stuff done when they feel like getting something done, not be forced to sit and watch the tea kettle boil. Waiting doesn't make the item any more special - it makes the player feel like they're wasting time. This in addition to the fact that people with gold will undermine this effect - gold flowing back to crafters never gets reinvested directly for the production of new items. With the exception of enchanting, garrisons provide all you need for you to maintain production. -Blizz wizened up to this in the first patch with garrison missions that added auto completion, so now if you're a crafter you can actually get things done in a reasonable amount of time and actually invest possibly in some ah resources. Even then, sellers can't sell the items the make for what they're actually worth because the majority of players don't have that kind of gold. Ironically if everyone participated, prices would be fairly normal and obtainable for most players as items became more common. TL;DR, they underestimated player "laziness." I'd argue that since this IS a game just make it a game for fuck sake. Don't hitch the economy to garrisons without some way to counteract the effects of non-participation.

The problem is the lack of content (adding twitter and okens is no content). They manage to destroy guilds and with Garrisons AH and social. They streched raid content by releasing phased but ppl notice anyway that´s lacking content. HM and BRf Should have been released at the same time and Hellfire citadel should be out by now. They made dungeons obsolete (why do we have to do PG to get on dungeons but not in raids ) There are no dailies and pvp is dead ( i can´t remenber the last time i had to wait 10 min for BG before WoD). The devs have achieved something ppl are no longer talking about bias towards Horde or Alliance they are talking about how bad the game is .

I remember people crying for a type of housing system in this game. Not all people, but there were lots and I would say it's stupid and doesn't fit in to this game. The Garrisons are what Blizzard gave us and have proven it's completely stupid to have them. Now the majority of players either sit in their Garrison waiting in a queue, for raid to start or to just log in and finish/start missions.

Blizzard removed flying at max level so we the players could feel more immersion to the world around us, but again with Garrisons they failed. All herbs and ore to be had, trading post for all mats and the lack of anything fun to do in the world anyway. Only thing I can think flying would help with is Archaeology and that isn't really fun. Good for achievement hunters.

So, even if they did add flying back to this expac, all we would use it for is flying around our Garrison.

I had high hopes for this expac, but it feels worse then Cata to me. The raids are fun, that's all I'm really enjoying at the moment.

Does it count in the token users? If it does, it's terrible. If it doesn't, we'll have to wait for the next report to see the real numbers.

No doubt the joke that was Patch 6.1 played a part part in this 3 million subscriber drop. Sure was the reason I unsubscribed

I hadn't realized how much lower it is than our poll here expected.

This is the worst, most boring and most gutted expansion to date, so it's a very well deserved drop. What wasn't deserved was the peak at 10 million after the release

    - Garrison everywhere making the entire open world pointless.

    - Ridiculous gear inflation (admitedly already a problem since WotLK, but I thought their decision to make a big number squish meant they understood such inflation was unhealthy, but nah they even made it worse in the end), making everything completely obsolete when there is already a drought of content.

    - No flying is not necessarily a problem, but if you combine the two above problems, then their entire reasoning about removing it is stupid : "make the world dangerous again !" ? Yeah, except I've quadrupled my HP by just going from 90 to 100, and doubled it again with gear. Mob are not a threat when you get such ridiculous inflation. "make the open world interesting !" ? Yeah, except everything happens in the garrison, so the open world is made just a nuisance...

    - Professions utterly destroyed (I really can't understand what they were thinking by slaughtering them like that).

    - Dungeons relevant for a whole two weeks before being sidelined (same problem as always : gear inflation, the bane of WoW since WotLK).

    - The whole stat dumbing down is pretty depressing too. Stat have lost all their "RPG" feel and are just "attack/spell power" now - being agile has no effect on a warrior, being strong doesn't help a rogue to strike harder ? Bullshit. Removed lots of actually logical stat to bring new boring ones out of nowhere.

    - Gear is boring too. Automatically adapts to your spec ? Nearly nothing to gem and enchant ? Meh. Boring.

    - Classes too homogeneous again, it's been years people complain about it, but it's just sad to see how formulaic they all are ("everyone in mêlée has the same counterspell with the same effect and the same cooldown !", yeah very interesting).

I won't even start to speak of the utterly retarded plot, which is the most idiotic thing I've ever seen in a game. Hard to involve yourself in the world and take the story seriously when it's all so absurd, illogical and thoughtless.

So yeah, WoD is a debacle, and the drop reflects that.
    Nailed it!

I really am enjoying this, even though I'm still subbed.

All those months of being talked down to by the devs that they know better and we're just complaining for the sake of complaining...

I still log in, do my garrison chores and the occasional raid with the guild. But apart from that I feel 0 incentive to do anything else.

Farming/Archaeology without flying is just a pain
Apexis dailies were fun for about 1 week
There is nothing to explore in world because anything rare rewards only on the first time kill
Rep farming just from killing the same mobs over and over is a massive chore

I spent more hours on Timeless Isle with things to do than in the entire WoD expansion.

Good that it adjusted back to realistic levels. The hype was absolutely undeserved and ridiculous in the first place.

I have hearthstone installed, and I've only played it once. Does that make me one of those 30 million HS players?

Nevermind blizz. Just keep adding stuff to cash shop like you always do. And create some shitty mounts like boars for ingame along with some rushed content.

If youre a smart company and blizzard is then you dont wait to drop under 1 million to go f2p, you try to keep the 3 mio playing. If you reduce the content released then make it f2p so players that still wanna play dont feel bad about it.
A good cash shop can bring alot of money, they could even sell old rare mounts, titles and legendary weapons for shit ton of money.

I think the developers are making one crucial mistake - while trying to make the game appealing to solo players (which I'm totally fine with) they're essentially creating a solo game. But there's a massive difference between a solo player traveling through what's at heart a multiplayer world and being a solo player who's locked in his garrison most of the time.

Deserved sub loss at this point. But I think you all have to agree levelling in WoD was the best it's ever been. I can't include Vanilla as I started in early TBC.

WoD needs a Timeless Island-style zone. Quickly. Now. Before it's not too late.

It's simple, before 10h was thriving and 25h was dying. Since they were removed the is just 20m and it's dying, you can't even do it properly unless your on a high pop server, and most players don't even want to raid with 20 people hence why 10 was killing 25. After killing heroic Blackhand a few times the isn't really anything to do except unsub until 6.2 or leave your guild/friends and transfer to a high pop realm to join a guild doing mythic (we have one in our battlegroup).
