Patch 6.2 - Developer Interview
Vanion had the chance to interview Ion Hazzikostas today. The more interesting points are below, but be sure to listen to the whole thing for context.

Raiding
  • Hellfire Citadel is more linear than Blackrock Foundry, but there is still choice and variety. Once you get to the second floor, you can choose which order you want to work on the bosses before going through Mannoroth to Archimonde.
  • There are quests like Well of Souls that allow you to skip part of the raid after you have killed bosses a few times.
  • Mythic Archimonde may have some interesting, unexpected, and new things happen once he is at low health.
  • There is no requirement to have killed Archimonde on Heroic before entering Mythic. Restrictions like this have existed in the past, but they were easily bypassed by inviting any player who had killed the boss on Heroic.
  • When the team was planning Warlords, Grommash was set up as the leader of the Iron Horde and the final boss. As they told the story and started working on Hellfire Citadel, they decided it wouldn't be a satisfying direction to go in. Players had just finished a raid zone full of Orcs and had killed another Hellscream. The real evil and more interesting character is Gul'dan and the influence of the Legion.
  • "Is Gul'dan dead or alive?" - "That's a good question"

Legendary Items
  • Once you have your legendary ring, the Crystallized Fel will drop from Archimonde on Normal or greater difficulty. This will scale up the proc and stats, allowing guilds to get slightly stronger every week.
  • The legendary quest previously required you to get 900 legendary quest items, which means you always got some from every boss. This time around, only 33 are required. This means you won't get one from every boss, which may not feel as great but it is tuned to be slightly faster than previous collection steps.
  • Most players should be able to collect all of the Tome of Chaos in a month or so.
  • Raid loot from Garrison missions was exciting, but it devalued participation in the actual raids and undercut the reward structure. When guilds finally moved into Mythic Blackrock Foundry later in the raiding cycle, they already had several Mythic items from garrison missions already, so it wasn't as rewarding as it should have been.
  • The bosses that dropped tokens in previous tiers dropped too many loot items in total, as the token items were separate from the normal loot. The team changed how the tier tokens were dropped in Patch 6.2, but by the time they realized bosses were not dropping enough tokens it was too late. It will be hotfixed for the new raid reset.
  • Figuring out how old style legendary items would fit into current itemization, class balance, and how the game works today is challenging. Creating a legendary weapon that only works for some classes and specs wouldn't work well.

Timewalking
  • Timewalker dungeons are tuned to be easier on purpose, but part of the problem is that classes have so many more capabilities now.
  • The old Shattered Halls could have a Prot Warrior tank who has no AoE threat, just tab Sundering. Situations like that made the dungeons more challenging. Most people didn't have AoE and AoE threat, so tanks couldn't hold threat on all of the mobs at the same time, making CC necessary.
  • Some of the Timewalking dungeons are a little bit too easy right now, such as Black Morass. Arcatraz is tuned a little bit better.
  • The team would like to expand Timewalking to Cataclysm dungeons, as well as expanding the number of dungeons covered by the system in Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.
  • Figuring out where Timewalking raids would fit in the reward structure is a big part of what it would take to add them. If you are going to form a larger group, you may as well go and raid current content. There are a lot of questions to answer, such as who is the audience, where do the rewards fit in, should you be doing this raid instead of Hellfire Citadel, and is it something you do to gear up for current raids.

Naval Missions
  • If you fail a Naval Mission, the mission will still be there for you to try again.
  • There aren't any plans to reduce the cost of Naval Equipment right now, but the team is keeping an eye on how players are using the items.
  • Players want to maximize their chance of success on every mission, but the team envisioned players just countering the basic ship types and some of the threats, but not every single threat.
  • If players feel that 500 resources are worth it for a small boost in success chance on every mission and actually buy the equipment, adjusting the costs is possible.

Feedback
  • The team hears the feedback from people that enjoyed solo play in Mists of Pandaria and found it lacking in Draenor.
  • Part of the problem is many of the rewards out in the world were moved into the garrison.
  • In Patch 6.2 they took steps towards fixing things by adding content to the world in Tanaan Jungle and more will be done in future content.
  • The team has been working on Hellfire Citadel and Tanaan Jungle since November 2014, so they were limited in how they could respond to more recent feedback.
  • The Patch 6.2 content was designed in the same mold as the original Warlords of Draenor content, so it feels like the team wasn't listening to feedback, even though they are.
  • Things that are being worked on now will be much more to players liking and the team has taken the feedback to heart.

Misc
  • Patch 6.2.x with flying should be on the PTR within the next couple of weeks. It should go live not months and months from now, but some number of weeks.
  • There are no current plans to make all of the Baleful items account wide right now, but it is something that was discussed. If you are playing in Tanaan and already well geared all of the Baleful items aren't useful for you, which doesn't feel great.

Patch 6.2 - Legendary Ring Upgrades
Vanion's interview confirmed that Archimonde will drop Crystallized Fel on Normal or greater difficulty, allowing you to upgrade your ring's stats and proc to item level 795, gaining 3 item levels each time. You can only get one per week, so it will take 20 weeks to hit 795.

795Finger Thorasus, the Stone Heart of Draenor
795Finger Etheralus, the Eternal Reward

Yeah, there's a bug where sometimes the game pulls outdated information about your character when you load into an Arena or Battleground. We think we've isolated what's causing it and are working on a hotfix. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Very interesting question to consider. Some thoughts, though keep in mind that they're just my personal opinion... (craig_amai)
Few (no?) games focus purely on large raids (like WoW/Wildstar) largely because it's difficult to form social groups that size. (craig_amai)
In MMOs, solo and small-group gameplay get people into the game so that they can form those kinds of larger social groups. (craig_amai)
Any design that aims to form tight groups of 10+ is probably going to need something approachable (solo?) to start players off. (craig_amai)
Instead, that kind of boss gameplay tends to find its way into less social games, like Titan Souls (solo) or Diablo (coop). (craig_amai)
That said, it certainly seems possible if a smart designer can come up with new, smooth ways for players to find each other. (craig_amai)

Mythic dungeons; loot lockout or dungeon?
Loot lockout. You can go back to help your friends if you want to. (WarcraftDevs)

With Timewalking Dungeons, how will the gear drops behave? Scale up as a character levels if not max or be lvl100 afterward?
The item’s level is matched to your player level when it drops, and it does not update after that. (WarcraftDevs)

I don't know if you've ever done arenas but my guess would be that you haven't. You have to experience it to understand
Ashran is meant to be a very different experience than arenas. It is expected some will prefer one over the other. (holinka)

Once everyone has there conquest gear what will keep them in ashran? alts....?
This is a problem of any progression system, not Ashran specific. What will we do once we're done? (holinka)

Perhaps, but I think to the majority of the player base Ashran is not fun. Every top Reddit thread is negative
We've made some changes we hope will improve the experience in 6.2. (holinka)

Computers - Setup of the Month
Each month or so we will post a couple of hardware setups for those of you who are thinking of upgrading their computer!

This month
The current SSD prices are fairly flat right now, with most SSDs under $0.50 per gigabyte when on sale.

New GPUs from AMD are here, but they aren't huge improvements over the previous generation.

Depending on how much you want to overclock, you may need to spend a bit more for a better CPU cooler like the NH-D14.

Unless you are doing a lot of video rendering or streaming, you do not need the 4790K and should spend that money elsewhere.

Make sure to keep your AMD and Nvidia drivers up to date.

  • Triple the chance that a Mythic dungeon item can upgrade to Warforged. As a reminder, when a Mythic dungeon item is Warforged (which can drop from any Mythic dungeon boss), the item level is increased from 685 to 705.
  • Increase the number of set pieces that drop from set bosses in Normal and Heroic Hellfire Citadel. This will affect both personal loot and group loot.
  • Increase the chance of getting an item when using a Seal of Tempered Fate.

We’ll be pushing a separate hotfix live today that will double the chance that a Timewarped item drops as Warforged, which increases its ilvl at level 100 from 660 to 675.

Also Tempered fate not inevitable?
Correct. It's a catch up change.

The doubled chance for Warforged Timewarped items is now live.

Most buffs are cleared when entering Timewalking, similar to Arena. This is necessary to ensure that the down-scaling that occurs when you enter the dungeon is done cleanly.

-Fix the Dungeon Finder's "Find new players" option so people arent absolutely boned by leavers
This is a bug we're actively working to address. The Dungeon Finder should be trying to refill groups for you.

-Is there any way to make Barrage stupid proof? please? Like, replace it with how volley used to be cast instead of every damned thing in front of the hunter.
Ideally people understand how their AoEs work before using them freely. We're always keeping an eye on things though.

-Add a bag that you can get for completing your first random timewalker for the day that drops a 660 piece and a chance at some pets and maybe a mount. Give the players a 'choo-choo train" so its a little easier to digest this... thing.
We're at least doubling the chance that a Timewarped item will drop as Warforged. That should feel a little better?

The feedback is appreciated and we're always happy to clarify how things function, whether intended or not, whenever we can. It'd be cool, though, to sometimes not read that feedback with such incendiary statements as "the failure that it is" or "make it stupid proof."

From my perspective it just makes filtering through feedback more cumbersome. There's more stuff to sift through in general, and then I have to try and weight the hyperbole against the legitimacy of the feedback.

You're passionate about the game and you're coming here to let us know about some things that frustrated you with a new system. I get it. That's cool. I just wish it could stay as simple as that, with less emphasis on the dramatic.

In any event, the thread is about Timewalking, and there are some improvements and fixes in order. Hopefully they help.

I totally get that the rewards were really good, and now they are not as good, and... that's bad because we all like good rewards for little effort, but the goal of balance is not to have one clear path of least resistance, especially considering the gameplay it involved were simply Garrison missions. It was impactful enough a change though that we waited until 6.2 instead of changing it earlier through a hotfix.

Upcoming Ashran Hotfixes
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)
We have a couple hotfixes in the works intended to improve the player experience in Ashran, and wanted to bring them to your attention.

First, we've reduced the maximum number of players per side to 40. We've also increased the number of available Ashran instances, to compensate for having fewer spaces in each Ashran. Since Ashran was changed in Patch 6.2 to automatically place players in a raid group upon entering, we feel that having 40 players on each side makes more sense, instead of splitting players into two separate raid groups. This hotfix went live yesterday.

The second hotfix is intended to limit situations where one faction is unable to win events for extended periods of time, by increasing their damage and healing. Once this hotfix is in effect, a bonus will be granted to the faction that has been losing the most events in a particular Ashran instance. For example, when the Alliance are winning more events, the Horde will have the bonus, and vice versa. The bonus is decreased or increased in increments of 5% for every event that faction wins or loses, up to a possible maximum of 50% increased damage and healing in extreme cases.

In other words, every time your faction loses an event, it will be 5% easier for you to win the next one. If your faction currently has the damage and healing buff, it will go up by another 5%. If the opposing faction has the buff, then it will go down by 5%.

Please note that, due to the nature of this hotfix, there is no visible buff on the player that shows you what benefit you're currently receiving. We may be able to add a visible buff in the future, but that would require a patch, and we didn't want to delay getting this hotfix out. It will go live the next time realms are restarted.

Hello everyone, I'd like to address some of the common points I'm seeing mentioned in this thread.

First, I want to stress that the intent of Ashran is to provide a very different play experience than Arenas or Battlegrounds. The vision is a large PvP space where players are moving throughout the zone, competing for rewards, in a faction themed conflict. As many of you know, there hasn't been enough fighting in Ashran, for a number of reasons and we're looking to change that.

One of the most important factors driving player behavior in Ashran is the reward structure and how efficiency drives group behavior. Specifically, I mean that when the same reward is available in multiple locations at the same time, the two factions avoid each other. It is easier and more efficient to not fight for an event if killing a rare offers the same benefit. Right now, at the launch of 6.2, we are in an atmosphere where the primary concern for most players is earning Honor. Honor can be earned throughout Ashran in a number of ways and as a result, there isn't a lot of competition going on.

The new season will begin soon and inevitably players will turn their attention to earning Conquest. There are only two ways to earn Conquest in Ashran in 6.2. The first is to complete the quests to kill the faction leader and win 4 events. This will put both factions in direct competition with each other over events and the Road of Glory. The second is to kill 200 players of the enemy faction. Obviously, this drives players to kill each other. Our expectation is that if players feel they can compete for these rewards they will.

We're obviously concerned from comments we've seen on these forums and within the game that the Horde feel they cannot compete at events and the central road. When it comes to PvP, players will only participate if they feel they can compete. This is the primary motivation behind the mechanic Lore explained above. When a faction falls behind, it is easy for everyone to go their separate ways and never engage the enemy. This buff should help players win some engagements and hopefully build the confidence (and numbers) needed to compete in the larger battles.

On a related note, I've seen comments that the Horde think they are outnumbered in Ashran, but this just isn't true. We strictly enforce faction balance numbers in Ashran. If there are ten Horde players in Ashran, we will not let an eleventh Alliance player in. We've looked at the data several times and it is clear. The number of Horde and Alliance players in any given Ashran is the same at all times. However, there are a lot more Alliance waiting to get into Ashran. Since we enforce faction balance, the only way to get more Alliance players into Ashran is to get more Horde players into Ashran.

As a small note, I know some people have compared this new buff to Tenacity, but the situation is very different. Tenacity was a buff that scaled based on how lopsided faction balance was in the zone at any given time. Players would have several stacks of Tenacity but they would be terribly outnumbered. We don't allow either faction to be outnumbered in Ashran. This buff is primarily in place to help the faction that's losing recover and hopefully win the next big fight.

Finally, we've have seen the feedback about the desire to see premade raid groups return to Ashran but we don't think this is a good idea. Ultimately, it led to a situation where if you knew to use the premade group finder, you would wait a long time but get into an Ashran where you were guaranteed to win. Unfortunately, if you didn't know about the premade group finder, you would get in immediately but were almost guaranteed to get demolished. We don't think this is a healthy environment for the zone to be in.

We appreciate how passionate everyone has been about the zone. We'll continue to monitor your feedback here and in-game. Thanks for playing and we'll see you on the battlefield!

Strongboxes in Random Battlegrounds
Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)
We've been seeing some confusion about how Strongboxes are awarded in Random BG's, so I wanted to take a moment to clarify.

In point-based Battlegrounds (Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm, Battle for Gilneas, Temple of Kotmogu, Silvershard Mines, and Deepwind Gorge), Strongboxes are awarded based on how many points the losing team was able to earn before the match ended. Earning 500 points will award a Bronze Strongbox, and earning 1000 points will award a Silver Strongbox.

In capture the flag Battlegrounds (Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks), Strongboxes are awarded based on how many times the losing team was able to capture the flag. One capture will award a Bronze Strongbox, and 2 captures will award a Silver Strongbox.

In Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest, Strongboxes are awarded to the losing team based on how many reinforcements the winning team had remaining when the match ended. If the winning team had 300 or fewer reinforcements left, the losing team will be awarded a Bronze Strongbox. If the winning team had 100 or fewer reinforcements left, the losing team will be awarded a Silver Strongbox.

In Strand of the Ancients, Strongboxes are awarded to the losing team based on how far they were able to progress before their turn ended. Destroying either the blue or green gate will award a Bronze Strongbox. Destroying the yellow gate will award a Silver Strongbox.

Of course, winning any Battleground will award a Gold Strongbox. In addition, Strongboxes are awarded to every player on the team that earned them, as long as they are still in the game when the match ends.

The goal of this system is to ensure that, even if you think your team is likely to lose, it's still worth your while to put up as much of a fight as possible and stay through to the end of the match.

A couple days ago I was in a SotA where my team attacked first. We captured the relic, but then the other team captured faster on their turn and we received a Bronze strongbox. Intentional or oversight? Seems like it ought to give a Silver based on those guidelines.
Hmm. You're correct, it sounds like you should have gotten Silver. We'll investigate.

Can you look at adjusting this? Maybe I've just been an anomaly, but a small portion of my CTF games have ended as a result of 3 flag caps, the vast majority being 1-0 or 1-1. It doesn't seem fair that a 0-0 game for 14 minutes with a good play to make it 1-0 results in a gold strongbox on one side, nothing on the other. It's even more unfair when one team holds a 1-0 lead for the majority, gives up a point to even it up at the end, and gets a Bronze strongbox despite holding a 10 minute lead and losing 1-1.
We agree that the system isn't working perfectly for CTF games at the moment. I can't promise any incoming changes as of yet, but it's something we'd like to improve.

I thought the confusion was why we were getting old (redundant) gear in the boxes?
We're looking into this as well.

For some reason you can no longer "Return" mail as you could before 6.2.

Any reason this was removed?

This wasn't intended. We're looking into it. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Another Expansion?
I can't answer on the timing, but we do have more story to tell and more ideas to share. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Very similar issue, but those will be fixed in the next mini-patch after 6.2. (WarcraftDevs)

When can we expect the illusion "Holy Infusion"? Many are still waiting for it since is was announced for 6.1
It likely won’t happen. Scaling the graphic in ways that looked good on most weapons we wanted it to work on was problematic. (WarcraftDevs)

Have there been considerations for rebalancing tier token class distribution? Protector has felt too saturated for a while now
There are no plans for this. (WarcraftDevs)

PvE
Quick question re: Timewalking. Will mastery still work as though we were 100 in BC dungeons?
Yes, you still have your mastery, and the stat will still increase its effectiveness. (WarcraftDevs)

Was it ever decided it level 100 would earn a reward during Timewalking events? Seals of Tempered Fate was mentioned.
Yes, the Bonus Event quest for Timewalking will award the new Seal (of Inevitable Fate). (WarcraftDevs)
Will it count in the 3-total of week or be extra like the garrison mission?
It’s a bonus Seal; doesn’t count towards the weekly cap. (WarcraftDevs)

Lore
I know this one too! Void Rev's are the remnants of a species overtaken by Void. Not undead, misclassified. (Muffinus)
but aren't spirits undead lol?
Dave stated NPCs can have more than one classification lore-wise
Well, yes, Mannoroth is an undead demon. Demons know how to raise undead, and he was a demon previously. (Muffinus)
do imps possess necromantic knowledge?
No idea, I personally like to think of imps in the Discworld sense, e.g. they will tell you exactly as much as you need to know. (Muffinus)
