2/10 Alpha Build Design Notes

  • New Specializations Unlocked – A whopping 6 new specializations are ready for testing! We’d love any and all feedback about their gameplay, artifact quest lines, abilities, etc.
    • Holy Priest
    • Holy Paladin
    • Protection Paladin
    • Beast Mastery Hunter
    • Demonology Warlock
    • Arcane Mage
  • Class Status – We’re continuing to iterate on our class abilities and talents, based on testing and feedback. This build has many revisions scattered around the classes, but here are some highlights:
    • Retribution Paladins – Several talents have been revised.
    • Enhancement Shamans – Many talents have been revised. We also revised some of their baseline abilities, and passives.
    • Elemental Shamans – Many talents have been revised. We also revised some of their baseline abilities, and passives.
    • Guardian Druids – Their core offensive combat abilities have received significant changes. Hopefully this should create more engaging gameplay.
    • Blood Death Knights – Many talents have been revised. We also revised some of their baseline abilities.
    • Subtlety Rogues – We’ve significantly revised their core combat abilities. We’ve also tweaked what abilities each spec has.
    • Marksmanship Hunters – Several talents have been revised.
    • Survival Hunters – Several talents have been revised.
    • Discipline Priest – We revised some baseline abilities.
  • Creature Tuning – We continue to tweak the health levels of creatures in Legion. In this build, creature health has been raised, because combat times were generally too short. Feedback on whether creatures take too long or too little time to kill is valuable, as well as how sparsely or densely populated with creatures the world is. Be sure to mention specific locations when giving feedback on this!

Thanks, and we look forward to your feedback!

Which of the Draenor dungeons takes you the longest to complete?

Legion Pet Battle Tuning

We’re getting close to deploying some changes to pet battles that we’ll test in the Legion Alpha. We wanted to outline some of them here for you, so that you have a thread in which you can talk about this with us. As always, these are changes we’re testing, subject to further change, not final, etc.

Undead racial
  • During its invulnerability round, the active Undead pet will now do -25% damage. Developer note: The Undead racial ability has been one of the most powerful, and this change should help bring it in line with the others.

Frog Kiss + Sleeping Gas
  • Now has a 1-round cooldown. Dev note: The ability to chain stun opponents (until resilience kicks in) simply feels bad. Rather than a blanket change to resilience, we’re trying a surgical change to one of the more aggravating aspects.

Thunderbolt, Avalanche, Grave Destruction, Carpnado, Arcane Storm, and Psionic Strom
  • Base Damage reduced by approximately 15%Thunderbolt
  • Will now have a 5-Round cooldown, to match the other abilities with similar damage and effect.Cleave
  • Added 1-round cooldown Dev note: AoE abilities are very powerful in the current battle pet metagame, especially “meteor”-type abilities, which are quite effective against both groups of enemies and single targets. This should bring them closer to their intended power level.

Graves
  • Clobber and Bonestorm slots swapped Dev note: Graves has a bit too easy of a time damaging the entire enemy team. Though we see other setups with Graves, it’s been too easy to AoE, and a bit too powerful among AoE pets. We are wary of opening up additional new Graves combos with this change, and we’ll be testing this closely and reading all of your feedback.
  • Graves’ base stats changed: At level 25, Graves’ Speed will now be 244 (was 211), Power will now be 297 (was 314), and Health will now be 1587 (was 1668). Dev note: Graves’ base stats, along with the Undead racial (which favors slow pets), made him an unfortunate opponent to play against. Combined with high AoE and Consume Corpse, he had very few downsides. This change should help bring his output in-line with other, similar pets.

Overall, this constitutes a triple nerf to Graves. However, depending on your ability choices, you may consider the Clobber/Bonestorm slot swap an improvement. Please feel free to leave your feedback in this thread, and we’ll be here reading (and responding where necessary).

Thank you very much!

Is there a way, even if we can't transfer characters, to copy our pets from live to alpha? Pretty hard to test some of the changes without actually having full options. Or at least "premade" pet battle teams?
I'm looking into all of this. I'll get back to you here.

Hello Assistant Game Director. Can you shed light on why Havoc DH only have 14 abilities while other classes have 25+ in Alpha?
Most classes went through multiple expansions of "ok, need to add 4 buttons for levels" vs. a new, lean class. Hard to compare (WatcherDev)
That said, talents add more. What do you feel the DH currently lacks? (WatcherDev)

That was always the case. Why bring a Mage when the lock had more utility? You can't bring every spec. (OccupyGStreet)

to homogenize but a reason to take an in depth look at the shaman, if you removed blood lust and people stop...
If there are no group buffs, you bring the highest dps (often rogue). If there are, you being the best buffs (lust). (OccupyGStreet)
I don't think 30+ unique but completely equal group utility roles is realistic or manageable for groups. (OccupyGStreet)

I think the bring the class problem is just a problem by having far too many classes and also sub classes.
Yeah we often wondered if the game had 10 classes or 30. (I know that number has grown since.) (OccupyGStreet)

The many stories and varied types of gameplay that have taken place on Azeroth (and later, Draenor) have never stopped coming. The history of Warcraft and the history of Blizzard Entertainment are fully intertwined, with each passing year falling into a unique Warcraft era for players. Those who started in with Warcraft eight years ago, for instance, started during the Burning Crusade. Those who started twelve years ago started during the Reign of Chaos era.

However long you’ve been with us, we hope you accept our heartiest thanks and gratitude for all you’ve done to help us expand the excitement and wonder of these magical worlds. We’re going to continue to explore them with you for a very long time to come.

When I was a kid, I used to beg my parents to let me go over to my friend Ben's place so we could play Justice League Task Force on his SNES. I didn't know it until very recently, but that was my first experience with a Blizzard game.

A couple years later, my friend Aaron introduced me to Starcraft. I'd played Warcraft I and II, but Starcraft really hooked me. Many of my formative years were spent hauling my PC across town to have LAN parties and just play Starcraft for hours on end.

When Warcraft III came out, it blew my mind - both the storytelling and gameplay were top-notch. Plus, since the internet had advanced to the point that I no longer needed to tie up a phone line to play online, I was able to stay connected with my friends (some of whom had moved to other states) by playing Warcraft with them.

Then I learned that Blizzard was working on an MMORPG. I'd cut my teeth on MMOs like Anarchy Online and Star Wars: Galaxies, but I knew that Blizzard was going to make something awesome. After all, Blizzard made the best games. Of course they were going to do the same in the MMORPG genre.

I had no idea how much World of Warcraft was going to impact my life.

It started out simple enough: I was just a moderator on a set of forums focusing on Prot Paladins. Then I was a co-host on a tanking-focused podcast. Then I was making the occasional boss guides for YouTube. Then a weekly vlog series. Then two. Then I was producing a weekly live show. Then two. Then three.

And then, I saw an opening for a Community Manager position at Blizzard Entertainment. I applied. I interviewed. I got an offer, which I accepted. Then I moved to California.

It's still crazy to me how much came out of just being really into a video game. I still have days sometimes where I show up to work, look up at the building, and think to myself holy **** I work at Blizzard Entertainment. I have a career because of World of Warcraft. I met my wife because of World of Warcraft. Pretty much everything about my life is, in some way or another, caused or affected by World of Warcraft. That's crazy.

Sure, Blizzard has its missteps. Sure, we're not perfect. I don't think any collection of human beings ever can be.

But damn if we don't make some pretty good video games. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

I agree that offering multiple difficulty levels for end-game PVE content has been challenging. It's not okay for some players to just not have an endgame. On the other hand, it's possible to make something epic feel not epic if you can reduce it to punching bag status with a slider. I don't have a good solution here, and to be fair, I haven't thought about it a lot in some time.

I still think "bring the player" was the right call. We were in a world where many specs and some classes just couldn't argue for a raid spot and others were brought just for their fabulous buffs or utility. I don't think some kind of group buff arms race is the right call either. (Would you rather have Blessing of Kings or Might? Probably Kings. Sorry paladin number 2, but we need to sit you and bring a hunter.)

In terms of role, maybe there was a way to keep Paladins as the AE tanks and single target healers. Maybe if there had been multiple endgames then there could be more variety. It sounds like the current devs are trying to differentiate the classes more without making any unviable which is a great goal. But I do think letting more classes do dungeons and raids was the right call at the time. Thoughts?
For me it meant that having a good, reliable person at your side should be more important than the class that they play.
That was the goal. My first guild had 5 highly skilled rogues. It was lame to exclude them just because of their class choice. (OccupyGStreet)

Computers - Setup of the Month
Each month or so we will post a couple of hardware setups for those of you who are thinking of upgrading their computer!

This month
The current SSD prices are fairly flat right now, with most SSDs under $0.50 per gigabyte when on sale. New GPUs may be coming towards the middle of this year

Depending on how much you want to overclock, you may need to spend a bit more for a better CPU cooler like the NH-D15.

Unless you are doing a lot of video rendering or streaming, you do not need the 6700K and should spend that money elsewhere.

Make sure to keep your AMD and Nvidia drivers up to date.
