Player engagement in World of Warcraft reaches highest levels in a decade

IRVINE, Calif.—December 8, 2020—Starting November 23, World of Warcraft® players around the globe began their journey into the unknown reaches of Azeroth’s afterlife in Shadowlands, the game’s highly anticipated eighth expansion. Today, Blizzard Entertainment announced that as of the first full day of Shadowlands’ launch, more than 3.7 million units had sold through globally, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time industry-wide.

The previously announced industry record-holder, Blizzard’s own Diablo® III, sold through more than 3.5 million copies as of its first day of release. Today’s announcement confirms that Shadowlands has surpassed that milestone as well as any other reported sell-through achievement for the same time frame among all PC games historically.

In addition, World of Warcraft has continued to see strong engagement from the global community franchise-wide.

In the months leading up to the expansion’s release and the time since launch, the game reached and has sustained its highest number of players on monthly or longer-term subscriptions compared to the same period ahead of and following any WoW expansion in the past decade, in both the West and the East.

Players have spent more time in Azeroth year to date than in the same period of any of the last 10 years.
In addition, total player time in game this year to date has nearly doubled compared to the same period last year.

“It’s been a huge thrill to enter this whole-new dimension of the Warcraft universe together with millions of players around the world,” said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “It’s been equally rewarding to see players enjoying all of the new features and content in Shadowlands—whether they’re exploring new aspects of their characters with the Covenants or setting foot in WoW for the first time with the new-player experience in Exile’s Reach—and there’s much more to come.”

The launch of Shadowlands is just the beginning of an adventure unlike anything ever before experienced in World of Warcraft, with much more in store for players in the weeks and months ahead. Starting today, Shadowlands Season 1 commences when the gates to the expansion’s first raid, Castle Nathria—the gothic stronghold of Revendreth—open in Normal and Heroic difficulties. Mythic Keystone dungeons will also become available, tempting Azeroth’s heroes with greater rewards for taking on increased challenges. This season’s dungeon affix, Prideful, turns heroes’ own sense of accomplishment against them in the form of ego-wrought manifestations. In addition, players will be able to put their skills to the ultimate test in Arenas and Battlegrounds as the expansion’s first Rated PvP season begins.

About World of Warcraft: Shadowlands
Shadowlands is the eighth expansion for Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Launched worldwide starting on November 23, Shadowlands sends players to the unexplored expanse of Warcraft’s afterlife, where the machinations of Sylvanas Windrunner and the malevolent Jailer threaten the very balance of life and death. There, players will explore disparate realms of wonder and horror; forge a bond with one of the Shadowlands’ four ruling Covenants in exchange for otherworldly power; delve into the Maw to rescue wrongly tormented souls; and ascend the twisting Tower of the Damned in search of legendary gear to help them restore balance to the beyond.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available digitally in multiple editions, including the expansion-only Base Edition ($39.99); the Heroic Edition ($59.99), which also comes with a Shadowlands-level character boost and Ensorcelled Everwyrm mount—additionally offering a quest to earn a new transmogrification set; and the Epic Edition ($79.99), which adds the Anima Wyrmling pet, Wraithchill cosmetic weapon effect, Eternal Traveler’s Hearthstone, and 30 days of game time.

PvP Rewards and Item Levels

First and foremost, Honor is the new currency that was introduced with the Shadowlands Pre-patch. Players can earn Honor from honorable kills, Battlegrounds, Epic Battlegrounds, skirmishes, Arenas, and Rated Battlegrounds. Honor can be spent to purchase gear from Purveryor Zo’kuul in Oribos. This gear can be upgraded by Agressor Zo’dash for Honor. The upper limit of this kind of upgrade is determined by your Renown level, and players can hold a maximum of 15000 Honor.

Conquest is an additional PvP currency. Players can earn Conquest from Battlegrounds, Epic Battlegrounds, Arenas, and Rated Battlegrounds. Players can spend Conquest to purchase gear from Zo’sorg in Oribos. This gear can be upgraded by Agressor Zo’dash for Honor. The upper limit of this upgrade is determined by your current highest rating bracket in Arenas or Rated Battlegrounds:

  • Unranked - 200
  • Combatant - 207
  • Challenger - 213
  • Rival - 220
  • Duelist - 226

There is a cap on how much Conquest can be earned during a season. This cap increases by 550 each week. This means that during week 1, the cap is 550. During week 2, the cap is 1100.

  • If you earn 550 Conquest during week 1, you will then be able to earn 550 Conquest during week 2.
  • If you earn no Conquest during week 1, you will then be able to earn 1100 Conquest during week 2.
  • If you earn 400 Conquest during week 1, you will then be able to earn 700 Conquest during week 2.

Finally, you should not have to wait for Conduit upgrades. Conduits appear at higher rank on the vendor automatically when your rating increases.

Castle Nathria

Located in the gothic heart of Revendreth, Castle Nathria is a 10-boss raid that takes you deep into the monolithic lair of Sire Denathrius. There, you’ll face off against unfathomable terrors as you race to uncover a sinister plot and fight to save the Shadowlands from a dark and twisted future. Inside, you will need to outmaneuver a bloodthirsty beast, save a wronged soul from a sinister fate, dance off against cavalier courtiers, and shatter the stone-skinned armies of Revendreth before serving justice to a power-hungry traitor.

Read about the bosses, rewards, and release schedule in our comprehensive Castle Nathria Raid Preview.

Mythic Keystone Dungeons Season 1

The new Mythic Keystone dungeon season is now available with opportunities for new rewards and the first seasonal affix for Shadowlands: Prideful. When this affix is active, your own ego may prove to be your downfall. As you defeat non-boss enemies, your vanity will eventually form a Manifestation of Pride. Defeating this Manifestation greatly empowers the party with Prideful, a buff that increases your damage, mana regeneration, and movement speed for one minute. You’ll want to prioritize your pulls to make the most of your Prideful buff so you can take on challenging enemies more easily.

Check out the Mythic Keystone Dungeon Leaderboards to see who’s staying on top of the clock.

PvP Season 1

Participating in PvP activities will reward you with Honor and Conquest currencies to purchase battle-ready, epic-quality gear from a PvP vendor within The Enclave in Oribos. You can also use Honor to upgrade your PvP gear to higher ranks and become even more formidable. Participants can earn a host of new rewards, including the Vicious War Spider and—for the highest rated players—the Sinful Gladiator’s Soul Eater mounts.

Keep an eye on the Player vs. Player Leaderboards during the season to follow who’s making waves at the top 5.

Reward Updates

Completing Season 1 activities will allow you to select a reward from the Great Vault. You can unlock up to nine different options for your weekly reward by completing objectives from Raids, Mythic Dungeons, and PvP. Be sure to visit the Great Vault in the Hall of Holding located inside Oribos to select your weekly reward and view the week’s objectives.

For PvP players, the weekly Conquest cap will start at 550 and increase by 550 per week.

During this first week of Mythic Keystone dungeons, there is a cap on the increase of item level of end-of-run loot. That loot will stop increasing at Mythic Keystone +10 for this first week, which is item level 203. However, the Great Vault will be uncapped the following week, and loot from the Great Vault (on December 15 in this region) will reflect successful completions achieved during the week of December 8. The Great Vault will award item level 226 for completing Mythic Keystone +14, and other completion item levels can be viewed in the Mythic Keystone tab of the Dungeons and Raid window once the season begins.

For this first week of the Season in PvP, item-level upgrades of Conquest equipment are capped at item level 220, requiring Rival (rank 4). Starting with the second week, (again that’s December 15 in this region), item level upgrades of Conquest equipment are uncapped. There are no caps on the Great Vault’s PvP considerations. Duelists (rank 5) or higher will receive item level 226 equipment from the Great Vault.

Good luck out there!

Long has Sire Denathrius ruled the denizens of Revendreth as they harvested anima from prideful souls. But as drought and fear gripped the Shadowlands, Denathrius revealed his true loyalties. In defiance of his former Master, the noble Prince Renathal gathers his few remaining allies for a desperate mission to infiltrate Castle Nathria and remove Denathrius from power.

Raid bosses: 10
Difficulties: Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, Mythic
Level: 120
Raid Finder Minimum Item Level: 170

RAID UNLOCK SCHEDULE

December 8 – Normal and Heroic Difficulties
December 15 – Mythic and Raid Finder Wing 1 (Huntsman Altimor, Hungering Destroyer, Lady Inerva Darkvein)
January 5 – Raid Finder Wing 2 (Sun King’s Salvation, Artificer Xy’mox, The Council of Blood)
January 19 – Raid Finder Wing 3 (Shriekwing, Sludgefist, Stone Legion Generals)
February 2 – Raid Finder Wing 4 (Sire Denathrius)

SHRIEKWING

Tasked with guarding Castle Nathria’s entry hall, the blind monster Shriekwing locates her victims with horrifying cries that reverberate off the chamber’s walls. The last sound heard by trespassers in the Grand Walk is the monster’s cry as she descends upon her prey.

HUNTSMAN ALTIMOR

Sire Denathrius seldom engages in hunts himself, but Altimor makes certain the master has the finest beasts should he ever choose to indulge. Margore, Barghast, and Hecutis has been trained longer than most beasts have existed, and each is ready to deliver the Huntsman’s wrath to any in his domain.

SUN KING’S SALVATION

In the sinister confines of Castle Nathria, souls are being tortured not to redeem their sins, but to amplify them. The prideful Prince Kael’thas has been burdened with the sins of others, and his pain and hatred are channeled to make him a powerful weapon. This has imperiled his soul like no other, and it must be saved—if only to keep it from being unleashed upon the Shadowlands.

ARTIFICER XY’MOX

Not everyone in Castle Nathria is loyal to Sire Denathrius. Some simply saw an opportunity and exploited it to their own ends. Artificer Xy’mox has worked with Denathrius but is mostly concerned with getting the better end of the deal, which may require the end of Nathria’s invaders.

HUNGERING DESTROYER

The devourers consume anima wherever they can find it. With drought afflicting the Shadowlands, it is no surprise that the hungriest and most dangerous of the devourers is drawn to the abundant store of anima here in the depths of Castle Nathria.

LADY INERVA DARKVEIN

Anima fuels the Shadowlands, and Lady Inerva Darkvein seeks to unlock its mysteries. Under Denathrius’s tutelage, she has learned insidious secrets to turn against his enemies. She will strip anima from Nathria’s invaders and use it to shape a dark new future.

THE COUNCIL OF BLOOD

The Council of Blood presides over courtly functions in Revendreth. Castellan Niklaus is a strict military commander with an indominatble will and impenetrable armor, Lord Stravros, a foppish dandy, leads the court in dance but is also deadly with his blades. Baroness Frieda wields powerful anima magics and commands the dredger wait staff—along with the respect of the entire court.

SLUDGEFIST

Slugdefist was born in the muddy foundation beneath Castle Nathria and now wanders the halls as he awaits orders from Sire Denathrius. His massive footsteps reverberate throughout the castle, announcing his arrival from several rooms away.

STONE LEGION GENERALS

The ancient stoneborn generals, Kaal and Grashaal, have hounded the Prince Renathal’s rebellion at every turn. Once they were General Draven’s apprentice and mentor; now their strength, strategy, and soldiers have been unleashed against him and any who would defy the Sire’s will.

SIRE DENATHRIUS

For countless ages, Sire Denathrius stood among the Eternal Ones who rule the realms of Death. But in the Shadowlands’ darkest hour, he has betrayed his sacred duty. With his bloodthirsty living blade Remornia at his side and defended by his most sychophantic loyalists, Denathrius will cut a swath through any who stand against him and cast their remains into the inescapable terror of the Maw.
