Arena World Championship & Mythic Dungeon International 2020 Plans

The Big Change

World of Warcraft Esports is moving to YouTube! This means that all the content for the Mythic Dungeon International and Arena World Championship—our live broadcasts and our VODs—will be hosted on the same great platform to make it easier for esports fans to watch.

Tune into our MDI broadcasts starting April 11th here: https://www.youtube.com/warcraft

  • Arena World Championship

Welcome Back the Mythic Dungeon International

We are happy to announce the return of the Mythic Dungeon International (MDI), with a new dungeon to challenge competitors and put them through their paces. Things are going to be a little different this year with some exciting changes.

Format Changes

  • The Europe and Asia (EU/Asia) division includes players from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Korea, China, and Taiwan.
  • The Americas (AMER) division includes players from The Americas, Australia, and New Zealand.

Teams will participate in the division based on where the majority of their team’s players reside.

It wouldn’t be one of the most exciting MDI seasons yet without an in-person LAN. This season’s final will have a massive $300,000 prize pool that our elite teams will compete for.

Moving forward, we’re also going to consider all MDI seasons as standalone events with a LAN final to cap each event. This provides us the ability to iterate quickly on changes and upgrades that we think the community will love.

Stay tuned to our MDI esports page for more information on the season beginning in April.

New Dungeon: Operation: Mechagon

We’ve added a new dungeon to the rotation this year with Operation: Mechagon. This dungeon provides 8 challenging bosses split in two separate wings—Junkyard and Workshop.

New Affix: Awakened

With the Visions of N'Zoth content update comes a new season of competitive play and a new Affix to contend with—Awakened.

While the Awakened affix is active, players will discover obelisks throughout the dungeon, which will pull players through the veil to the shadowy world of Ny’alotha. There, players will confront a powerful servant of N’Zoth which they must defeat, or the servant will join forces with the final boss in the instance.

Teams will have to push themselves to their limits (and beyond) to prove they’re the fastest team around.

Looking Ahead

We can’t wait to see how the competition this season unfolds; in the meantime, we’re preparing for future MDI seasons in Shadowlands. We’ll have more news to share as we get closer to the release of the expansion.

A new year waits for the Arena World Championship

Embarking on the thirteenth year of the Arena World Championship (AWC), we felt it was a good time to shake some things up and will be hosting one final season to close out Battle for Azeroth. There’s even more on the line than ever before.

Format Changes

Beginning in Spring, registration for the AWC’s online qualification cups will open. All eight online Arena cups will award a $10,000 prize pool and AWC Points. Anyone can sign up and test their mettle for glory and cash prizes.

Teams with the most AWC points after all four North American and European cups will be invited to compete in the AWC Battle for Azeroth Finals. There, the eight best teams in the world will compete for a share of the $500,000 prize pool—the largest AWC Prize Pool to date.

Looking Ahead

Shadows of the imminent future loom. The Arena World Championship will start up once World of Warcraft: Shadowlands has released, and Azeroth’s fiercest gladiator’s will be tested more than ever before.

The first AWC Tournament Series in Shadowlands will host two crucial competitive seasons with online cups and two in-person tournaments, including a mid-year LAN and a finals event which would occur in the Summer, similar to the Battle for Azeroth Finals this year.

All of these changes to the Mythic Dungeon International and Arena World Championship mean changes to WoW esports events that have typically taken place toward the end of the year, such as BlizzCon 2019. Don’t worry though, we still have plans in the works, and we’ll have more to share later.

This year proves to be an exciting one for World of Warcraft esports and we look forward to sharing all of the exciting news and action with you.

Be sure to follow and bookmark the Battlefy Page in order to be the first to sign up for the first cup. The upcoming schedule and current point standings can be tracked at the official esports AWC website.

Warsong Gulch Exit Portal Removal

We’ve seen an increasing number of reports of these portals being used in unfair ways, and we feel that taking this step eliminates the potential for unfair gameplay while making no change to the intended, legitimate flow of the battleground.

As always, we really appreciate and value all of the player feedback that raised the issue. Thank you!

Razorgore the Untamed

At only six (and seven) minutes past the hour, the first guilds to complete the Razorgore encounter were:
  • CN United from Huhuran (China) at 23:06 UTC
  • Praxis from Zandalar Tribe (Europe) at 23:07 UTC
  • For teh Horde from Heartstriker (Europe) at 23:07 UTC

Vaelastrasz the Corrupt

Basking in the glory of great power, the first three groups to end Vaelastrasz’s torment were:
  • Praxis from Zandalar Tribe (Europe) at 23:08:54 UTC
  • Ashes of Time from Earthshaker (China) at 23:09:08 UTC
  • Shao Guang from Ouro (China) at 23:09:10 UTC

Broodlord Lashlayer

After a brief suppression, Broodlord Lashlayer went down first to:
  • CN United from Huhuran (China) at 23:17:49 UTC
  • RISE from Incendius (North America) at 23:19:21 UTC
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:19:38 UTC

Firemaw

Firemaw’s Shadow Flame barely slowed down the same three leading guilds:
  • CN United from Huhuran (China) at 23:22:15 UTC
  • RISE from Incendius (North America) at 23:24:24 UTC
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:24:36 UTC

Ebonroc

At this point, another guild from Europe charged into contention, and Ebonroc was first downed by:
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:31:52 UTC
  • Progress from Firemaw (Europe) at 23:32:12 UTC
  • CN United from Huhuran (China) at 23:32:15 UTC

Flamegor

The same three guilds in the same order ended Flamegor at 33 minutes past the hour:
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:32:58 UTC
  • Progress from Firemaw (Europe) at 23:33:17 UTC
  • CN United from Huhuran (China) at 23:33:50 UTC

Chromaggus

A dragon for all dragonflights, Chromaggus succumbed to:
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:37:12 UTC
  • APES from Gehennas (Europe) at 23:37:12 UTC
  • Progress from Firemaw Europe) at 23:37:22 UTC

Nefarian

With less than 43 minutes elapsed, the first three guilds in the world to complete Blackwing Lair in WoW Classic were:
  • Progress from Firemaw (Europe) at 23:42:21 UTC
  • Calamity from Mograine (Europe) at 23:42:21 UTC
  • APES from Gehennas (Europe) at 23:42:29 UTC

Congratulations to every guild that planned and executed this feat so well!

Warcraft Radio Interview with Ion Hazzikostas
Warcraft Radio sat down for an exclusive interview with Ion Hazzikostas about the recent Ny'alotha race to world first. Here is a recap of the interview. Be sure to watch the full video for all of the context and additional information!

  • Race to World First
    • It was really exciting to see a North American guild come out on top for the first time in awhile.
    • The team monitored the race in real time and fixed issues as fast as possible.
    • The Ra-den pre-immunity issue was hotfixed immediately so that immunity class stacking wasn't encouraged on the fight to bypass mechanics. The difference between this and the respawn issue was that Limit hadn't killed Ra-den yet.
    • The mythic race has shed light on bugs in mythic raids a lot faster than in the past.
    • There is a bit of a trade off in that the team wants to keep final boss mythic encounters somewhat exciting and secret which results in them not being tested by a large variety of guilds or situations.
    • Most mythic encounter strategies end up a little different than the team intended.
    • The issue that caused the team to despawn N'Zoth wasn't necessarily a bug, but a workaround that needed tuning so that the damage wasn't healable, forcing players into the portal.
    • The team wants to avoid excessive randomness in encounters that continually cause wipes.
    • The intended mechanic for 25% was a safety mechanism to spawn the gateway at 25% if phase 2 was initially skipped by dpsing the boss down to 25% without going in the portal for phase 2 yet, but the bug was that it was doing it EVEN IF phase 2 was completed.
    • Carapace was a little easier than intended, and in retrospect the damage requirements of phase 1 was too low.
    • In the past, these bugs only affected a small group of people, but now that they are public the team is learning how to improve communication and fix issues.
    • There are no plans to have mythic raids open simultaneously between NA and EU. They don't want the raid opening at bad times or having to delay opening, and most of the race comes down to learning and conquering the fight first.
  • Corruption System
    • Overall the team is happy with how corruption turned out, but there are still tuning issues. They like the choices and trade-offs that it brings to fights.
    • There are multiple tiers of each corruption so that you can wear more pieces of gear with good corruption without having excessive corruption negatives attached.
    • Corruption is an 8.3 system and is NOT the future of WoW.
  • Ny'alotha Encounters
    • The ball mechanic in the Xanesh encounter is the team trying to develop new ideas in raids that haven't been seen before.
    • Ion likes the Wrathion encounter, especially as a first fight, because it creates spectacle while also having some interesting mechanics.
    • Ion also likes the Carapace fight, particularly because he likes the idea of fighting your way into N'Zoth.
    • Sometimes datamined abilities in the encounter don't make the final cut but remain in the files as they iterate on fights even prior to PTR testing.
    • Queen Azshara originally had an extra phase with unique adds that didn't make the final cut.
    • Ion believes N'Zoth lives up to the standards of previous final boss encounters.
  • Future Mythic Encounters
    • The team is working on making sure bugs are solved before the race starts while also improving communication so that they fix these bugs faster when they pop up.
    • Final bosses of raids will likely still not be tested on the PTR for mythic to keep the surprise.
    • The team is happy with the 6 months between raid tiers as it's a good balance to allow people to make it to the end of the raid that have slower progression.
  • Battle for Azeroth Ending
    • There are definitely already hints building up to the future of the story.
    • Ion talks about the disappointment some felt for N'Zoth's end, but at the end of the day we are the heroes of the story and we will always defeat villains and make way for new villains to enter.
    • The team wanted the final cinematic of the expansion to focus on you as the hero and your efforts to build up your Heart of Azeroth being important to victory.
  • Shadowlands
    • There is a lot more to talk about with Shadowlands in the NEAR FUTURE.

    • Wrathion, The Black Emperor
      • Fixed an issue that prevented players from receiving loot if they did not generate threat during the encounter.
  • Operation: Mechagon – Junkyard
    • Resolved an issue where Scrapbone Grunters summoned during the King Gobbamak encounter could spawn Explosive Orbs on Mythic Keystone dungeon difficulty.

Items and Rewards
  • Thaumaturge Vashreen has relocated his supplies of the Deathslaver's Hauberk, and it can again be obtained for Titan Residuum.
  • Corrupted Items
    • Fixed a bug which caused Devour Vitality (Corrupted Effect) on the polearm An'zig Vra to have a lower Critical Hit chance than intended.
    • Fixed a bug which could cause Devour Vitality to fail to deal damage for players with Balance Affinity who were auto-attacking from maximum range.
    • Fixed a bug where canceling the Echoing Void (Corrupted Effect) buff did not immediately stop it from dealing damage.
    • Ineffable Truth (Corruption Effect) should again correctly reduce the cooldown of Fire Elemental spell and the Stormkeeper and Storm Elemental Talents for Elemental Shaman.
    • Thing from Beyond's (Corrupted Effect) damage is no longer increased by Demonology's Master Demonologist passive or Beast Mastery's Master of Beasts passive.
    • Thing from Beyond's damage is no longer increased by the corrupted player's Versatility.
    • Resolved an issue that could cause Twisted Appendage and Infinite Stars (Corrupted Effects) to break crowd control effects on players (e.g. Mages’ Polymorph).

Missions
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the new Visions of N’Zoth troops from counting towards Champion abilities.

Quests
  • "Aqir Instincts" and "Honing Instincts" no longer have their progress blocked by being in a raid group or when summoning or dismissing the Shadowbarb Hatchling. Kills made while in a raid group will still fail to grant experience to grow your Shadowbarb Hatchling.

WoW Classic
  • Battleground scoreboards no longer list the enemy team until your entire team has clicked Enter Battleground. The scoreboard remains visible for everyone once the battleground has started.
