    [Film] Great Films Megathread

So, I am a really big fan of the world of films, having watched more than 30 fresh-rated films from 2011 and having generally watched a LOT of films through my life and especially the recent years.
I have made my own Rating Page on my computer where I have written down all films I remember seeing through my life, inclusive a 0-10 Rating for each. This has led to me only giving 8 films 10/10, 8 films which I think are some of the “Great Films” in the world of films.
Of course there are lots of “Great Films” every year, and have been since the birth of the art of filmmaking, but I wanted to make this thread to get a closer look at which films other people are the Greatest they have watched.
(Note: I haven’t watched many films from before the 90’s, but have mostly watched films from year 2000 until now)

So the Eight films I have rated 10/10 are:
    • Titanic (obligatory, some might say, but I really thought Titanic was a shivering masterpiece in every way)
    • Rain Man (the rich characters and the immerse story are at an extra sharply rate in this extraordinary film)
    • A Beautiful Mind (this film bugged me throughout the whole film and until now, with one of the best plots I have knowledged)
    • Forrest Gump (the fictioned story of an autistic man who participates and achieves a ridiculous amount of achievements in his life, the most magical film I have seen)
    • Slumdog Millionaire (with a boomblastic plot that throws you around, this dramatic masterpiece also tells a lot of the real slums in India)
    • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (this film was a journey into something utterly unpredictable all the way through, told through the life of a man who elders backwards)
    • The Help (for me, the best picture of 2011, this was a heartbreaking experience and at the same time, one of the most heartwarming)

    Now for you
Tell us about the best films you have seen, and why (this is optional ). I am looking forward to some insights from you Champions!

    Adding to this:

    Inception
    Red Dawn
    Saving Private Ryan
Children of Men (personal favorite for a long time)
    Event Horizon
    Equilibrium
    Enemy Mine
    Pandorum (underhyped, great movie)
    The Postman
    The Book of Eli
    Aliens
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Temple of Doom
    Last Crusade
    The Breakfast Club
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Platoon
    Mad Max
    The Road Warrior
    Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Planet of the Apes (Original, "Damned filthy apes")
Return to the Planet of the Apes (one and only)

Aside from "The Breakfast Club", you can obviously tell there's three themes I love in movies: War, End-Time (pre/post-extinction, population crash), and Adventure (hence the Indiana Jones).

I don't really have a set of favorite movies but these could be it:

    2001 - A Space Odyssey
    Psycho
La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc)
    Persona
L'année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad)
Ningen no Jôken (The Human Condition)
    Shichinin no Samurai (7 Samurai)
    Rear Window
    Citizen Kane

All those movies were very creative and/or unique for their time and are still a pleasure to watch today.

My four favorite in no particular order are probably
Scarface (Just a great movie doesn't even need a reason)
Drive (So unique and nothing else like it)
Boondock Saints (Takes an idea everyone has had and makes a badass movie)
A Man From Earth (Hands down incredible, it will change your perspective on life. I swear this is probably the best movie you can ever see. The crazy part? All it is, is talking.)

OP, you know you only listed 7 movies? You said 8.

    Law Abiding Citizen
    Lucky Number Slevin

I could name a lot more but I was aiming for ones that I feel are lesser-mentioned.

Forrest Gump (likely my favourite film of all time)
    Saving Private Ryan
    Kick-Ass
    Breakfast Club
    Speed
Godzilla (1998) (a lot of people doesn't like it, but I saw it the first time at age 7 in 1999 and I thought it was the greatest thing ever)
Grew up on Disney movies, had almost all of the full-length ones on VHS like Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Toy Story, Robin Hood, Beauty and the Beast etc. etc.

I've put together a list of my top 100 favorite films and I try to keep it updated with new movies that come along.

At the top of that list is:

The Fiddler of the Roof - A wonderful musical. "The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of his faith—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village."
Kill Bill - Epic bloody revenge.
The Abyss - Sci-fi epic by James Cameron.
Casablanca - Sad and beautiful, there is nothing that quite like this story of former lovers who cross paths again.
Battle Royale - This is the movie that makes you go "Holy crap! Did that just happen!?". You'll be watching with your jaw on the floor.
Contact - This is a movie I can see again and again.
Gattaca - Same with this one.
Akira - This was the first anime I ever saw and nothing has topped it since.
12 Angry Men - (I prefer the newer version actually, to many peoples disgust)
The Last of the Mohicans - The climactic finale is astounding. See it please.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - One of the best animated movies by studio Ghibli. A story of a princess with kindness and vision in an apocolyptic future.

I have never given a movie a 10/10, but these are my highest rated according to IMDb.
    (No particular order)

Blade Runner (1982) - Classic sci fi movie, simple story, amazing depth
Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972) - This movie is insane (pun intended)
Take Shelter (2011) - About a man losing his mind to schizophrenia
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - fun, touching
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away) (2001) - strong reminder of my childhood living in Japan
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - Another classic sci fi movie
Seven Samurai (1954) - One of my favorite Kurosawa/Mifune flicks
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - Peter Sellers is a legend, hilarious movie
Lost in Translation (2003) - Stronger impact because of my past
Mulholland Dr. (2001) - Along with Blue Velvet my favorite David Lynch movie
Vertigo (1958) - Favorite Hitchcock (his other movies are amazing too, but this one stuck the most)
Sunset Blvd (1950) - simple story, amazing characters
A Streetcar Named Desire (1950) - same as above, Brando's on screen presence is mesmerizing
Persona (1966) - Ingmar Bergman, need I say more? Also first mindfuck movie ever, I think. (love his other works too)
    Il Conformista (1970) - Bertolucci's best
Goodfellas (1990) - Classic gangster movie
Boogie Nights (1997) - Same as Goodfellas but with pornstars instead of gangsters
Das Leben der Anderen (2006) - Best German movie of recent years
    Memento (2000) - Probably Nolan's best movie.
