Don't forget you can have spaces in a name, so while your name might be taken, you can add a lastname and you now got it.

a reason could be that anet has limited names to not include roxxor words like: killer, noob, fuck, blood, shadow, arthas, sephiroth, dark, imba, pro,..

god that would be too nice to be true :/

Yes I did. I generally use names from a fairly obscure D&D world (Birthright) and one of my normal character names was taken when I went to create a warrior character. I've never had this happen before in any game. Although all the other ones I use were still available as they are even more obscure and I was using first + last name.

Might be me, but in GW1 I noticed that it was almost impossible to get much of any names XD. I think the gw1 player base is a lil dif than what commonly would be say in Rift or WoW, and since we are facing a sequel XD, it's possible that those same players are migrating, thus making some more obscure names a little bit harder to come by?

    It's just a theory tho.

I'm not too bothered by it, as I generally make up new names for every character I ever play, in every game. :P

I am concerned about the Asura, though. Single-word names will be in high demand, and I know people will want to steal mine.

Same with me. I've had my OC for years.

Hoping I get to his name first!

I plan on my name being the company and title that I want to work for and have. I doubt anyone else would have that as their name :P

Well, I thought I'd seen some bad names in WoW, but with all names being globally unique, we're going to see some outright terrible names here.

Being able to have spaces will help people like me who always try to pick something normal looking, but we're going to be little islands in a sea of Xbox Live-ish names.

    Naming Policy for GW2

We want Guild Wars 2 to be a safe and fun space for everyone. Guild Wars 2 is a global game, played by people from different countries around the world. People may disagree about what names are offensive and a name that is not offensive to you may be very offensive to another player. When creating a character or guild name for Guild Wars 2, it is encouraged that you select a name that reflects the theme of the game. The guidelines listed below outline the types of names that you can NOT use, and apply to player, character and/or guild names..

We do not permit names that:
Have offensive racial, ethnic, or national connotations.
Include hate speech or bigoted slurs
Reference sexual acts or real life violence.
    Are pornographic.
Make inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions.
    Reference illegal drugs or activities.
    Reference religious or historical figures.
    Reference real-life people.

Reference names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials, or products.
Use misspellings or alternative spellings of names that violate any of the above rules.

Impersonating an ArenaNet, Inc., NC Interactive, Inc or NCsoft employee or customer support representative is against the Guild Wars 2 User Agreement, so we do not allow characters to take the real name or handles of employees. In addition, if a name is found to violate a third party’s proprietary rights and the rights holder complains about its use, we will not allow the name.

    Etc

Looks good , if they Police it, i doubt we will see many stupid names

Once, when making an alt a couple years ago for kicks when I was bored, I couldn't think of a name and the random ones bored me, so I literally rolled my face against my keyboard.

I don't remember what it was, but the random bunch of letters I got was already taken.

EDIT: WOW I didn't even notice this was a GW2 thread... thought we were talking about WoW.......

He is the life of guilds he has never joined.
He once had a noobish moment- just to see what it felt like.
If he were to beat you in a duel, you would have to fight the strong urge to thank him.
The Lunar Elders have a holiday in which they honor him.
He can speak Darnassian. In Orcish.
He is: The Most Interesting Man in the World of Warcraft.

Maybe im mis-remembering, but isnt it possible to have several people with the same first name as long as there was still a variation with last names as well as spaces/mispells?

    Alex
    Alax
    Alex Alex
    Al Ex
    Al Alex
    Alex Whifflebottom
    etc

Those should all be allowed if iirc? If so just think of a decent equally unique last name for your character if you're really married to the name. (though it kinda ruins hardcore RP names for Asura)

It's funny an account of mine recently (2months ago) got banned (short) for the name 'Prefarmwh Ore' that toon is 3years old (I wonder if Cunning STunt would be restricted/banned...
btw best name ever for my ele. 'Overnine Thousand'

But in all seriousness, I just brand my toons. They all have the same last name (due to gw1's names needing 2names) ofc my asura will be a sad panda due to being the only asura with a last name but fck lore/convention

Assuming I've GW1 characters, what are the step necessary to retrieve those name in GW2? I remember reading it somewhere but can't find it anymore. And would that work even if I didn't buy any GW1 expansion?

As long as you own GW1, have logged onto it at least once between the 1st of January 2012 and the 31st of July 2012, linked your GW1 account to your GW2 account, and your character existed on the 31st of July... it'll be reserved up until roughly a day after the official (non-headstart) GW2 launch day.

My main name should be reserved from GW1 so I'm all set. As for my other characters I'll just make a name up when it comes to creation. All of them will have Care as their surname though because that's my surname and it's been my online name since ever.

Yes. You shouldn't even need misspells (shudder). In fact, in GW1, having a last name/patronymic/title/appellation/honorific was essentially mandatory because you had to have a space in your name. Mind you, I didn't play GW1 much, but I did create a few characters throughout the years, and never had a problem with such a name being taken. If the name is your own creation and not from popular culture, it's very unlikely that it is taken (and even less likely that all variations are taken).

That's the good thing if you can choose to use names of your non-english native language.
The probability of them taken is much lower than with english ones. =)

Maybe some of you want to experiment with foreign names, too?
(hint though: don't bother with popular japanese names)
