Are people really trying to act like this is not a reaction by Anet to the community on a issue they have reevaluated? Ok.. sure they planned it this way the whole time.. despite the fact that they had said differently before?Still there isnt have an addon-macro support or flying ponies (easier things to implant), even with the fanbases and official forums shitstorming Arenet every time ....
So the community dont have 100% the upperhand on Arenanet . But <<they>> simply procced as they plan :P
I love this game as well but please dont be so blinded that you act like this company is omniscient, all wise, all seeing and planned it all from the start lol. They just said in a recent interview that they do in fact take customer feed back very seriously and thats a good thing. They may not implement all things that customers want as they are counter to their design goals but this issue in particular is CLEARLY a reaction by them to customer feed back.
To try and interpret this as anything else is ... just beyond silly.
Kudos to the community for speaking out on a issue and Kudos for Anet for being willing to listen and alter there game accordingly when they find they are in the wrong.

First of all , especially this site , dont give freeback .
But instead try bash the game in any way they can :P
Even for the slightest thing :P
About <<procced as they plan *>> , yeah its prety silly , but they said they will <<work on it>>
They didnt speed it up (3 months have passed) , cause the forums shitstormed them :P
It they where afraid the forums too much , 3 days later we could have this regional restrection lifted
Listen-Plan-Execute or Denied(no1 can force them)*
Edit: Got dammit i must stop drinking all the time ....

So what is this thread about?
Actually, they apparently had this planned for a while.
The region lock at registration exists to protect their retail partners (probably mostly so that shady resellers don't exploit currency differentials) by forcing Americans and Europeans to buy the game where they live; they would have no benefit from keeping the region lock after. While that might technically sell a few more copies to those who move, it would also incur a lot of customer support costs (the biggest cost factor in any MMO) and a lot of ill will.

It doesn't solve anything.
See? People still locked in at 55 EUR version if they are living in Europe. That is a problem, that people cannot buy the games at affordable prices. For customers in the North American and European regions, upon registration our servers will perform a one-time check to ensure your serial code matches the region you are connecting from.
You mean, ArenaNet found ways to make people pay the taxes of their place of residence, instead of dodging? The audacity of such a company to comply with several different nationality's financial laws already in place.
Or you could, you know, drop it. Because that was never what this was about.

Tax dodging? You'll have to elaborate.
The main reasons are typically more expensive distribution (doesn't apply to digital), and additional/higher costs associated with localization and local support as well as potential additional liabilities.
Tax dodging is certainly a new one. Is that like when RIAA people tell you that when you backup a CD, you're supporting terrorism?
Hint: you may need to pay tax on imports, but in vast majority of cases a price of a single game is too low to qualify to be import taxed. VAT is only paid in seller's locale (hence all the tax dodging companies headquartering in Luxembourg to abuse its 15% VAT).
ArenaNET is probably a first western (NCSoft influence probably?) company which decided to implement region locks. If they will have enough guts to open its ciphered forums to the general audience, it would be interesting to see whether it will be a problem of comparable scale to the infamous 8[234] error...

Not the first by a long shot. For example, physical consoles had different form factor for reason of geolocational locking even back in nintendo entertainment system days.
That said, the trend has been for "global" consumption rather then locked down geolocationally for a long while. There are still some anomalies, but in general companies want for their content to be accessible in as many locales as possible with minimal hassle. The main reason for this trend has been copyright infringement when geolocation locking impacted availability.
Notably in case of MMOs there's little fear of copyright infringement due to server requirement for play, So without that hammer hanging over their heads, the companies will happily go back to locking down content to squeeze a little extra from the customers just like in the old days of modding NES consoles to bypass region lockdown and be able to play imported cartridges of games never released in your region.
