... Dear god you must be right...

Well, 1 gig for that cheap is pretty absurd, so yeah it's fine.

hah..the highest commercial one in uk is 150?ish. i talked to a korean friend and he was like thats nothing.. our government is already planning for 2-4gigs>...

In case nobody mentioned it, the actual benefit to the end user is going to be minimal unless there's a lot of fiber penetration in a short amount of time. Having a 1Gbps connection isn't going to make a lick of difference when it comes to downloading things like torrents for most users.

google, please buy centurylink, they are the worst ISP in the history of the world.

But it will make porn download faster, right? Otherwise, why bother?

    Overshare.

I think it's corporate greed that got the internet where it is today.

No more unlimited internet downloads and slow speeds for the prices offered now is ridiculous. You would think that for every megabyte we download someone has to carry a boulder up a mountain.

It's really sad when countries that have way less can somehow get better internet but mine cuts out hourly and if I go over my download limit I have to give them my first born.

I can't wait to see the reaction on peoples faces when they get connected trough google, turn on their pc and get "stuck" at ONLY 440MBit/ps and start complaining at google not meeting their end of the contract. Then to get told google is meeting their end of the contract up until the plug they installed at your house. Because MOST (i'm not saying 99% since most percentages on the net are made up even though I think this time it would be quite an accurate guess) connections INSIDE your houses are still good old copper wires which have a limit of up to around 400MBit/ps which is 55Mbyte/ps. And for wireless it's even worse because of interference and what not.

TL DR; Unless you have fiber all the way to your PC on which you plan to use those speeds, you will still be stuck to copper wire or wireless speeds.

And I really, really, really wish this knowledge would become more widely spread around the world!
Just my 2 cents to this discussion, thank you

Copper Ethernet has no problem with 1Gbps full duplex.

Google has nothing on us :>

I mean you guys are from supposed super nations, would've thought technology over there would be more accessible. ^^
    Sorry, but preparing?
Some areas in Sweden got 1000Mbit/s 2-3 years ago.

    Over very short distances...

Cat6 will do 100m, give or take, of horizontal cabling before there's any significant data loss or attenuation at or near 1Gbps just fine.

Okay, i'll give you that, but bare with me here for a second: How many houses do you think have perfectly installed cat6 cables laying in their houses without the twisting inside messed up one way or another by folding the cables or any other type of damage.

Maybe I should have mentioned that the speed I was talking about is for your average peoples copper wiring. But you have to agree with the rest of the post I made, right?

No, when the Google techs came out to install the internet they probably did it for them.

I doubt everyone will see 1gbps but that's mostly because their NICs, not the wiring.

I didn't even bring that network card stuff up because the problem I was scetching hapens before that point, but you are true on that.

But, you miss my point, I am talking about the cable from the modem/router to the PC which is NOT done by google techs. It's this last stretch that will ruin the fun for A LOT of people, not all, but most!

idk, bit too speculative :P I live in an old ass house and did the wiring myself when I renovated. So I know mine works lol. Cat6 wiring isn't rocket science for the most part.

Back in like 1990 or so, my father made me crawl under the house and run Cat5*ethernet cables to every room. I hope whoever lives there now appreciates it.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

I agree, for anyone with a bit tech knowledge, it isn't too hard. But there are way to many "al bundy" type of people, for the lack of a better word. Or people who love to be ignorant and just blame everyone and everything but themselves, you see what i'm getting at?

    I approve of your work!
To bad that, at least where I live, wireless is really everywhere. Even if it means slower speeds...

Even if the work is a bit shabby, ethernet isn't exactly fickle. It usually either works or it doesn't work and depending on the length of the cable the attenuation from a broken sheath is pretty inconsequential. It's not like they're built for shielding or eliminating crosstalk to begin with, most of the hard work stops at the twisted pairs themselves, after that it's a crapshoot.

Is Google's new service good enough for VR games yet? Maybe we have at least that part covered now
