Didn't hate the event. Just thought it was boring/uninteresting. Also I am getting a little weary of the shallow PVE in the game overall. Playing a DPS is not interesting to me. Neither is tumbling or jumping about the terrain.

GW2 is just kinda shallow in the PVE side of things. Still fun but wears thin very, very quickly.

I loved the event and found for the most part, other than the length of the reinforcement portion it was a well done battle. This is the first time in a very long time you didn't have to just sit in a corner and spam spells without danger at a foe with 10 million health. The mechanics were terrific and made you think on your feet which to me is successful design.
The fractal dungeons are the best design I’ve seen in an mmo in a very very long time, bravo!

The island is only one part of Sea of Sorrows. It'd be nice if later on the rest of it had the usual heart quests, skill points, and vistas and maybe keep the karka island as the major DE chain event area or something. Like I said before, I think a scaled down version of the event could be worthwhile. I do hope they keep the karka centralized there though, after this past weekend I've had enough of them to last me a long while.

As for content, well, at least this was something everyone could do. I played WoW for 6 years and got fed up fairly quickly with how their content patches (when they do happen) are typically only ever focused on max level players and, worse, often aimed towards raiders at that.

I had a lot of fun with it.

I find it shocking that the game has been out for a while, and we still dont have this "new content" that was going to be a staple of the epic Anet F2Play model. It seems our definition of content , greatly differs.

I hope Im missing something, because I dont see myself logging in again until the next "content" patch drops.
yea, I don't want to feed the troll here ... but the patch consisted of more stuff than just the, admittedly, dull and boring island with the, admittedly, most annoying one-time event i've ever experienced in my mmo-career

go ahead and do the fractal dungeon. Really great stuff, might keep you busy for a while.

Yeah, It did include a new dungeon. Which is cool I guess. But its just a dungeon. Dungeons are not ANets strong point. I doubt anyone will argue that point. I was hoping for content in the new island, something that would take more than 2 or 3 hours to knock out ~ remember, people talked about how shitty D3 was, just because they didnt add content and only added difficulty levels, now all the sudden, its COOL if ANet does it.....

The new island is rly large, and could have a lot of new content added. . . but it doesnt. . . its just a large open space where crusty sea spider things congregate and roll over people. Its hard to argue that GW2 has an aggressive content release schedule when they are barely releasing "content". 1 dungeon is a good start, admittedly ~ but ANet is going to need to do more than that if they and their fans want to keep boasting how awesome they are and how much new content they are pumping out compared to the "other game". Because people are running out of content and we need something other than dungeons for a time sink.

I still want to do things in original Guild Wars, but I don't have any friends in that game, and it's hard to find people for things like Underworld, the Deep, and Urgo-... or whatever it was named.

I would love to do those.

As for the event in Guild Wars 2, not that spectacular. Auto-attacking, and killing mobs over, and over, and over again for some hours is not really fun. As much as I like Guild Wars 2, I don't think events in that scale works at all, they must come up with something better than that.

I think original Guild Wars got a lot sweeter combat than Guild Wars 2, even though being somewhat static.

EDIT: Guild Wars 2 combat feels a lot better when it's around 1vs1 / 1vs2 / 2vs2 and such, not super huge army battles.

Fully agreed with this. It was a horrible choice to give trials during this event, if anything it pushed some people away form the game rather then make them interested in it.

I have no clue either, but someone on GW2 forums said to keep them, so I suggest to do so.

I'm sure there's folks out there that DID make these claims, but I doubt very much it's the majority of the fans. You seem to have created some "fanboi" presence to argue against at this point.

Game came out in August, in October they added some more jumping puzzles/ minidungeons, November got a new dungeon and a couple more jumping puzzle. December will add something as well. I agree that the island could have had more to it, certainly, but the dungeon seems to have lots of praise. I'm just not sure who is boasting about release schedules. I do recall plenty of folks saying that lack of sub-fee didn't mean no updates, and I think you'd agree that seems true enough at this point, right?

So what standard are you applying to GW2 that they're not living up to? And why bring it up in a thread about the weekend event?

I still have my ghost detector things, can't imagine I'll ever need them again until next Halloween at least (and hopefully they'd supply them), but I just know when I destroy them, some video will come out of some hidden place!

I destroyed mine, since it didn't seem like it actually worked when I used it.

Also, for the people rawring about the content provided, each month they give us an event, and some extra stuff. A gigantic new zone was never really in the deal, so sorry for the people who looked forward to do that. FOTM is getting amazing praise, some called it the best dungeon in a game ever. But obviously, you will disagree, so no need to make a new comment about that. After all, when you're REALLY having fun in the game you're not on MMO Champion, so this really is haven of quitters and neighsayers.

Should go back to the pony thread soon... tomorrow.

Same lol. I keep everything I get from events thinking it's some massive future secret.

I don't really know how to express my feelings about the event haha. The Friday one was just massive lag for me and I did not enjoy it one bit. I liked the part where we had to go to Caledon Forest and Kessex Hills to defend them though. And we come to the one on Sunday..which makes me really angry. I struggled for 3 hours in that event until we finally completed it and I got loot that was worth less than 2 gold, and what makes it even worse is the fact that lots of other people completed the event in overflows and got the chest multiple times.

I know it's just rng like every other event with a chest at the end but the part where people complete the event multiple times and receive a chest just frustrates me a lot! They should have done much better in my opinion and they could have!

I can't say all that much about it, it certainly wasn't nearly as fun for me as the Halloween event. I had too many issues with Lost Shores to really get a good grip of what was going on and all in all I killed way less Karka than I had hoped.

Those that I spoke to about it weren't very fond of the event either, but I really can't judge it much other than from a "I wish it would work better." standpoint.

The event was pretty boring, but the reward was nice. But the rest of this patch is simply so awesome, Fractals of the Mists and Temple of the silent storm, like!

  15. #115
I haven't played in quite a while, but one time, non repeating events (or even events on a very brief schedule like this) simply aren't a good idea for an MMO.

  16. #116
    I completely disagree with that.

Perhaps they should string it out more, like over a week perhaps. But having one time events makes your game more alive, sets it apart from the other games. If you don't do stuff like this, you end up with a world of warcraft clone.

Well even wow has one time events and I'd hardly call wow a BAD MMO, now I wouldn't call it an amazing one either but it's certainly not a bad game. Hell THE MOST popular thing I've even heard of in wow was the undead invasion event, the only people I heard complain about it were the same people that'd complain about a boss mob being dragged into porn shire so their oponion is invalid.

I'm not sure but the one-time event in WoW was a few days, wasn't it? The battle vs. the Ancient Karka was for 2/3 hours and the finale itself only once which took half an hour or so. I didn't play the whole weekend and got in this battle by accident. Didn't know about it and my friends either, none of them was as lucky as I was and I don't like the fact that they never get the chance on that experience + loot again.

As much as I hated the lag-issues, I really loved the battle. Wiping whole groups of people was something I would definitely love to see in the big metaevent-chains in the other zones. When that Karka insta-killed 20 people in the finale I really wasn't sure if we could do this... Now this was awesome

The undead invasion was the only one I can remember. I think there was an elemental one time event as well. All I remember from the zombie invasion were the constant complaints and whiners of people on the forums. Hmmm....that seems familiar.

ANet has shown that they are stressing the 3-day format and thus if they are clinging on the one-time events being that unique thing setting themselves apart then they are in for a surprise. WoW did indeed have multiple one-time events though mostly connected with expansion launches and beta closings and even when they had toned it down it still caused confusions but even their last one-time event (Fall of Theramore) is still in the game albeit as toned down version which is fine by me.

ANet can't guarantee that their content delivery is bug-free or does not have major showstopping bugs because their Q&A process not being en par with their content and not up with the demand of modern industrial standards. Combined with the overly fast-paced and time-constrained format they are more likely to alienate players with good intentions than the elephant in the room. In my opinion therefore the idea itself isn't unique because it is not game-format-specific thing. In fact the ideas are like cream - good ones rise to the top. This clearly did not and I have little faith in their capabilities.

If they stretched it out over a week then I may agree but not only that they should make the sub-events repeatable and have one NPC showing the sequence in cinematic format for those who missed out the cinematic event in-game. But given their bug-ridden nature of their content it's still more likely that it's a net amount of 3 days in the end. Still I'd prefer that over the current solution. Even though I think for the time being until they have sorted out their Q&A processes and methodologies they should probably forego them for a while.

Well, cynics (not me) are already calling it one due to ANet's swing in philosophies. I'd disagree anyway because that one thing isn't needed to set yourself apart from WoW and games commonly also named its clones. I am sure there's more things you could do to set yourself apart from the rest than making people stress-test your server infrastructure at announced times. In fact they had their chance to set themselves apart in more permanent things but they are slowly deviating away from them.
