Discussion on the specs of a computer I intend on ordering

Hello fellow forum posters, I've made an account on MMOC so I could ask for opinions on the rig I'm planning on ordering.

    The specs are as follows:
    Case
NZXT PHANTOM 410 WHITE GAMING CASE

    Processor (CPU)
    Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-3570 (3.4GHz) 6MB Cache

    Motherboard
    ASUS® P8Z77-V: PCI-E 3.0 READY, WIFI, SLI, CROSSFIREX

    Memory (RAM)
    8GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)

    Graphics Card
    2GB AMD RADEON™ HD7850 - DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 3 Capable

    Memory - 1st Hard Disk
    2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)

    Power Supply
450W Quiet 80 PLUS Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan

Now my question is should I have any difficulty playing most games on high graphical settings? I'm upgrading from an 8 year old dinosaur, so this is very important. This rig is currently coming in at a price of £886 inc VAT.

    Thank you for your time!

(If you're wondering why the HDD is so big it's because I intend on recording a lot of footage on this rig, but I don't need the extra I7 threads for editing as I'll be exporting the videos to another machine once the raw clips are rendered.)

You will be more than fine with that rig!
There will be some games you will not be able to play at super-ultra with 8x AA active, but those will be exceptions rather than the rule.

I really don't advice you to record to the same drive you have your OS and your game on, so I would suggest you either get a secondary drive, or an SSD for OS/games. It's a lot of extra money, but this is something you really will notice the benefit of while recording.

Ah that's good to hear, I was afraid of the first comment being "It's terrible, pay double the price"

Yeah I can get another drive any time, this is just what I'm grabbing on purchase day. Thanks for your input!

If you're building this computer from a 'select the parts' site, I'd make some changes:

    3570K over 3570.

Drop the mobo from P8Z77-V to the LK edition or go for ASRock Extreme 4, Gigabyte UD3H

    Go with 1600 Mhz RAM.

    Consider grabbing a bigger PSU.

Go for two HDDs instead of one. I read that FRAPs works best when you have two HDDs (doesn't have to be a Caviar Black - you can probably opt for SSD + 1TB Caviar Blue for about the same price).

PSU - go for 500-600W 80+ Bronze of a good brand. 450W is cutting it close if you're getting a sketchy brand.

Why bother upgrading to a 3570k over a 3570 though? I know the overclocker is unlocked but what other benefits are there?

Otherwise you could save money by going with a H77 motherboard instead of the premium Z77 one you chose.

I chose the Z77 as it has built in WIFI, which I require as I'm not very close to my Hub. Does the H77 include this?

    Also I checked how much it would be to upgrade the RAM from 8G 1333MHz (2 X 4GB) to 8G 1600MHz (2 X 4GB) and it's only £3 more. (The 1600 brand is 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT)

You could always buy a seperate Wifi adapter via USB dongle or PCIe card. I have the P8Z77-V and bought it for the same reason you did. The problem is that the onboard Wifi adapter has pretty poor performance which isn't worth the $50-60 price premium.

The only H77 motherboard I know of with onboard wireless is the Gigabyte H77N which is Mini-ITX.

Hmm, you're probably right, maybe I'll move my router to my computer room and get a cable, that's a more reliable form of connection anyway.

I have changed the following specs also -

    Power Supply
600W Quiet 80 PLUS Quad Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan (was 400W)

    Motherboard
    ASUS® P8Z77-V LX: USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX (Downgraded)

    Network Facilities
WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI CARD (Didn't exist before)

Usually the price difference between the LX and LK versions is $15 or less. If thats the case, I'd go with the LK.

The price difference between the two motherboards was closer to £60 so more like $90

Only thing I would consider changing is the PSU perhaps a Bronze 600w?

600w is overkill for even your computer, much less his...

I would recommend against changing the power supply. Especially with a one-gpu-setup that will use a single 6-pin connector.
If anything, I'd ask you to reduce it - but let's not be silly.
450w should almost be enough for two 7850's. Keep the 450w, don't throw the money away.
"Cutting it close if you get a sketchy brand"? It's a gold-rated PSU. For a rig that will pull <240w. I wouldn't bother changing it.

There's nothing wrong with the built-in WiFi on the P8z77-v. It will draw less power than an additional PCI-E card as well.

1600 MHz RAM might be only £3 more expensive, but they will bring you almost a 0.1% performance upgrade. It's not a bad idea, but it's not super worth it already.

According to PCspecialist this rig shouldn't use more than 350W, so you're spot on with the PSU reccomendations TetrisGOAT.
Again everyone, thanks for the input

I don't see any place where the OP listed his selected PSU was 80+ gold. I don't even see a mention of brand or where he's ordering from. According to this handy dandy PSU calc, his rig will pull 325W without OC. The only reason I suggested he upgrade his PSU is because there's no guarantee what brand he gets, and it wasn't mentioned. If he was rocking a legit PSU model, then 400-550W is sufficient for his purposes.

The onboard WIFI for the P8Z77-V is weak, about 1 bar weaker than a USB dongle. If you're going to rely on WIFI, you're going to want a more powerful adapter (especially if its for gaming). If you're only looking for the onboard WIFI in the P8Z77-V, the $50 price premium is not worth it. For the OP, it seems like his price premium would be more along the lines of $100-150.

In both his 450w orginal setup and his upgrade to the 600w listed above they are both "Be quiet" I would assume which is a listed reliable brand and known reliable/recommended psu's by overclockers. Its just a European(Germany) brand. I would say either the 450w or 600w are perfectly fine for the setup they have come up with.

Unless I'm missing something, the PSU was listed as "450W Quiet 80 PLUS" not "450W be Quiet!".

According to the be Quiet! website, be Quiet! only makes 80+ (without Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum modifiers) for SFX (300W, 350W) and TFX (300W) platforms.

be quiet 600w 80+gold quad rail This is what I was guessing he was choosing for the 600 and heres the one I was assuming was assuming was the 450 a more standard model which I guess I did miss be quiet 450w 80plus dual rail It might not be bronze certified but it should run his system just fine. But yeah Id recommend at least going bronze certified as well.

If the PSU was truly an 80+ Gold, don't you think it would be listed in the item title? The GOLD part of 80+ Gold isn't something you just leave off like it doesn't matter.

The item title just says "Quiet 80+", it'd be wrong to assume 'Quiet' refers to 'be Quiet!'.
