Arrow Benefits of biased reaction to female MMO avatars?

It is true that posing / being a girl / female in-game have perks and bonus.. but for real girls, posing / playing as boys / dudes / male in-game is well.. safer, and a peaceful. plus not to mention it's more likely to find in-game real buddies..
lets not talk about OP --(which sadly is.. me), but the general fact that this is happening.

i've got tons to type, but internet blew them away..

    what triggered this thread?
an in-game buddy on Dragon Saga confessed to my manly character in-game. he's straight btw. (just to make the story short)

I would suggest using a different title as the term She-male has negative connotations.

Although your wording is horrible the question as to playing an opposite gender character in a game is quit valid.

Seconded, because as a member of the LGBT community I'm well aware that "shemale" is primarily a sex related term that objectifies trans people. I don't really care if you change the title though as I get what you mean.

As for your question, there are definitely benefits to acting like the opposite sex in game, if that's what you're looking for.

As a girl, I think it's quite the opposite.. I find them creepy, strange and usually damage the reputation of real women in mmo's. It's because of that I always declare that Im a female when called a "dude" or "mate" etc. I just don't want to be associated with them.

That usually gets perceived as being an attention whore. Gender is wholly irrelevant in video games - it doesn't matter if you've got something swinging between your legs or not as long as you can shoot straight.

Oh would if this were true.

    Terrible thread title.

Also I don't understand the fascination with someone's gender in a game. It's a roleplaying game, who cares really? Unless you're actually looking for someone to date, in which case there's probably better places to find other prospective singles.

Like getting random PSTs of "what hours do those legs open for business" or "are you a real girl" or "a/s/l" or "did you just get that purple because you're a girl" or "don't bring her just because she's a girl/sorry MT"?

I call my real life female friends Dude all the time, but then I call everyone Dude. Also look at my Avatar, I'm Trans, I have a female body now but I was born male. Sure I'm a fat manly woman, I usually call my self an Ogre-Gnome. But the thing is I play character of both genders, for me I come up with a character concept and then build them up.

    WOW
    Highborn Pirate - female Night-elf
    Megalomaniacal Gnome - Male Gnome
Stoned hippy Warewolf - was a Male Night-elf druid, now a male wargen druid.
Insane destructive Gnome - Female Goblin <-long story

    D&D
Avatar of Dwarven behavior - (multiple sex changes by drunken gods) Dwarven Vindicar.
Recon Spy - Valley Elf Female
Thief - Dwarven Male with shaved head and bead wears sunglasses, really good with a knife, has extra special eyes. (ok his name is Redbrick)

Seeing how a recent poll showed that about half of the male playerbase has at least one female character, does it even make sense to start hitting on someone ingame based on their toon's gender? Does it make sense to try hitting on someone in any videogame at all?

Oh christ, that's a good one. My shaman has always had to be tauren female to make the name be as humorous as it's supposed to be (her name is Manwrecker, she wrecks men, you can probably figure out the jokes implied) and the most I ever put up with was some dude in the tauren starting zone hitting on me and refusing to believe me when I said I was a guy. Could've been trolling for all I know, though.

Back when I played WoW, anyway.

To the avatar? I'm not sure that I'm aware of any differing reactions to avatars in MMOs.

Now, if you get someone on TS/Mumble and find out they are a female then sometimes peoples attitudes change, both for better and worse, at least that I've observed.

There are tons of youtube videos from, like, hardcore raiding guilds where a girl starts talking and all the previously super-alpha hardcore guys suddenly shut up and stay quiet because OMFG GIRL. It's pretty funny.

I know, I was in one at one point when I still played that had a female OT who was shitty as fuck but banging the RL so she got taken every night, and another female rogue who actually kicked (interrupted) and more than competed on dps charts (this was in BC, btw) who was never taken unless one of the regulars was gone, purely because she wouldn't send topless pics to the GL.

Good reason to not let scrummy guildies know you're a she!

Changed the title. Open to suggestions for refining it.

When playing my female characters (main is male but every subsequent alt has been a chick), I have never presented myself as anything but male. Not that the topic of gender regularly comes up in PUG conversation or whatever, but I do make a conscious effort to perhaps sound a little more 'dudebro' than I usually would IRL.
Regardless, on occasion I have had people assume I was a chick without asking and acted rather 'clingy' and sycophantish (quite unsettling, feels like a randy dog going after your leg) and one time I even had some randomer give my 80 twink a load of Primordial Saronite for a Shadow's Edge. Never asked for it, we were just chatting in the days coming up to MoP about the expansion and stuff in Dalaran, then he runs off to the badge vendor and gives me a bunch of Saronite. He may not have assumed I was a chick and just felt like being generous with the spare badges he had, but still, it was quite surprising.

Hardcore raiding guilds generally require a mic test before you qualify.

Anyway, I've been in other guilds that don't give a shit if you are male, female, alien, or what as long as your personality fits in and you can play.

Used to be this thing called Project X floating around back in the TBC days that was basically a video that detailed the way some girl (come to think of it, wouldn't have been surprised if she was underage at the time) pretty much took over a successful raiding guild by pretty much just making some softcore porn of herself and sending it to the officers.

Lots of jimmies got rustled over that, I guess. Sometimes I think the guy that made the video was just jealous.

Wouldn't doubt it. The pics of the other females in the guild that the GL got were passed around if you were one of the 'inner circle'. It was a very very odd dynamic, and the guild broke up when the RL and GL moved (they lived together) and never came back online.

But yes, the super-alpha-males of video game culture are oftentimes the ones not getting any who will do aaaaaanything for a woman who will even talk dirty to them over Vent or w/e. It is pretty hilarious and a fair, in my mind, reason that some guilds don't allow women. Not because women are bad, but because the rest of their members can't socialize with women properly.

    XKCD (always related):

Well its because the young teenager boys are teenagers and horny fucks pretty much and act like idiots. Thats how a lot of young boys are and will never change (sad but true).
Im 25 myself and I couldnt care less what damn gender I play with. I play with them if I like them as a person. I have quit playing with guys & women because they were just damn annoying.

And about what gender I choose my characters for depends what class/thing it will do. Like warrior I usually go with a man and healer/caster ill roll a woman and sometimes I choose depending on what armor the character will get.
