Fluttery feeling in my chest. Can't sleep.

I was hoping there would be someone who may have some knowledge on this health issue or a dr. in this community that might point me in the right direction.

    About me.... Im 26, 5'9", 240lbs.

I have chronic allergies and asthma.

for the past week, I have started experiencing a weird feeling my chest when i go to bed. Somtimes it can come and go thoughout the day especially after I eat but its more noticable at night when i try to go to sleep. ITs like a weird fluttery feeling my chest and I get tingaly in my arms and throat. I have shortness of breath as well. I;ve narrowed it down to Anxeity, Arrhythmia, (heart attack?)... Im obviously scared out of my mind right now because I dont know why its doing this or whats going on. Tonight I took prednisone to try and help with the shortness of breathe but now I feel jittery, and I still have shortness of breath. You think these symptoms warrants a visit to the emergency room? I dont want to go in if its most likely nothing.

I saw my allergy and asthma Dr. over the week and he did some tests on me and said it wasnt my asthma or allergies. He said it might be sleep apnea but something tells me thats not what this is...

    Any thoughts?

I read the topic title and thought that you were excited for Christmas.

Drink some Horlicks and get some sleeping pills. You're golden.

Figured it might be Bronchitis or a chest infection, but if you went to your allergist I would assume (s)he would have checked for that.

Could be irregular heartbeat or maybe sleep apnea and as you start drifting off you stop breathing, oxygen stops flowing to your limbs, they 'fall asleep' then you wake up and notice it?

I would take your allergists' advice and go get a sleep apnea study done.

80% of fluttering is anxiety because you expect to feel it and then feel it. But your weight can cause your heart to work extra, so it is never a bad idea to go to the doctor and do a checkup. If the doctor does not find anything you might ask your doctor what he recommends or what specialist he may send you to, to further examine the cause. Emergency room will yield you nothing as far as diagnosis goes.

Yes, that happens at 1st but then i cant even doze off after that. Would that explain the fluttery/tingely feeling my chest though?

Anxiety? Nerves? The fact that you are worried you are having a heart attack and don't know what to do?

its very rare to be having a heart attack at the age 26 right? Even though Im overweight?

If you sleep normally -> not sleep apnea :P Not much else to say about that diagnosis. Just tell your doctor everything, how you're sleeping, any special events lately, shortness of breath, low/increased appetite, any pains (neck injuries can cause tingly sensations throughout your upper and lower extremities, but I suppose you haven't had any events that might have caused that recently?), trouble going to the bathroom/increased bathroom visits, a minor heart attack. From what I've read it can be anything from sleep deprevation to panic attack, to a serious fall to cancer.

You're not overweight "enough" to be in the danger zone.

I don't have the statistics in front of me, nor do I, honestly, care to do any research into it, but your weight would be a factor, as would family history, stress, and if you get much (any) cardio at all.

If you honestly think you are having a heart attack, you should go to an ER right now.

I'm not a doctor, and without tests and equipment that doctors literally cant use over the internet, they won't be able to know what is wrong with you.

I would say, however, that you probably aren't going to have a heart attack every time you lay down to go to sleep, that isn't how the cardiovascular system works.

Sorry to bug you guys with this stuff. I was just contemplating if I should go to the ER or not. I just cant get any sleep over it and its really creepy.

    thanks for the tips.

There is a very easy way to determine is you have problems with your heart or not. If the pain is located in a specific spot or area, that's not a heart problem. However, if the pain is spread out around your chest, there's a chance your heart might have some issues (at 26, I doubt it). Probably it's something related to your asthma, but I suggest seeing another doctor.

My 19 year old son is having the same symptoms. We went to the doctor on Friday and, although she did order an EKG just to cover all the bases, we're both fairly convinced it's anxiety and/or a thyroid issue. What happens is you suddenly become aware of your heartbeat which then causes you some concern and then your body releases adrenalin which causes your heartbeat to become even MORE noticeable and rapid. I wouldn't go to the emergency room right now but definitely make an appointment with your regular doctor as soon as the offices are open again after the holidays.

You would know if you were having a heart attack...although symptoms vary, they are NOT subtle lol.

Im planning on making an appointment with someone whos specializes in sleep apnea and if they cant explain the chest issues then I think I need to see cardiologist. I havent been diagnosed with anxeity but I think I might have it pretty bad

Or arrhythmia... that can lead to heart failure or stroke..

at the OP. I have the same things happening a lot myself. And have went to a hospital over it about three times. In my cases it's always been Anxiety.

Anxiety is a bad thing. Causing symptoms. If you are scared, call an ambulance, or head to emergency. Time is gold if you are indeed having heart problems

You know you're overweight--- why not work to lose some of those excess pounds? Even if this issue isn't caused by your weight, there are tons that are. I can't imagine a post on MMO-Champion motivating you to take a lap, but do some research and see for yourself the hazards you're putting yourself in.

Definitely sounds like anxiety/depression. I have this myself but are on SSRI since three years back, feeling much better. And no, SSRI (Zoloft etc) doesn't change you and make you numb etc, it just adds what you're lacking - seratonin. Like any other medicine that adds what the body cannot produce or effectively handle anymore - like insulin etc. So there's no shame in taking them.
The reason why so many are on meds like these today (2009 it was above 10% according to Archives of General Psychiatry - surely much more today) is stress - quite simple. Our biology cannot keep up with the pace we have today so we're in constant fight & flight mode, unless we find a way to control it. People cope better or worse with this depending on genetics and life situation.

Anyway, I'll stop preaching and tell you this - go to the doctor and talk about this. You'll just rile yourself up to more anxiety if you try to analyze it yourself.

See a regular doctor, have them run some tests. However, I can tell from the way you're describing the situation and how you react to it that you have at least a slight amount of health anxiety. You seem to be researching symptoms, looking at sites like WebMD and the like: doing that only makes the problem worse, as someone who has developed health anxiety and struggled with an anxiety condition for the past few years you can trust me on this one. So do what I said: see a doctor, let them run tests, if they tell you it's most likely nothing (especially if they tell you it's definitely nothing life-threatening) then relax and trust them. Health anxiety is a vicious cycle, you have a minor symtom, you worry about it, the stress and anxiety causes more/worsening symptoms, you worry more, etc.

Having gone through the same symptoms and suffered two strokes, you should see a doctor as soon as you can. Especially if you have weakness or sudden loss of balance. It could be a precursor to a stroke, commonly known as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), which basically means you are having a stroke without the permanent repercussions. Regardless, it sounds like you have hypertension (high blood pressure) and you need to be medicated. HBP is no joke and that shit needs to be checked, same with your thyroid levels. You are 26.. its time to ask the doctor about big boy problems and stop thinking you are young and you are going to get over it in a week. It's that type of thinking that led me to have 2 strokes at age 31.
