ALAC = Apple Lossless Audio Codec
FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Codec.

As far as I am aware, iTunes has never sold lossless (ALAC) files, but if they did, that'd be okay. Even if you would have to break the law to transcode them into a format that isn't apple-exclusive.
