I'm not sure why you want to get a new GPU but perhaps something like this?

    Intel i5-3570K @ 4.7GHz | MSI Z77 Mpower | Noctua NH-D14 | Corsair Vengeance LP White 1.35V 8GB 1600MHz
    Gigabyte GTX 670 OC Windforce 3X @ 1372/7604MHz | Corsair Force GT 120GB | Silverstone Fortress FT02 | Corsair VX450

Why shouldn't i upgrade the GPU? surely it would be better than on board graphics?

32-bit DDR3 is gross but may be adequate if you just want movie playback. There are 64-bit DDR3 versions but honestly I am not sure I would bother since the system is a lowly P4. You're almost certainly better off saving the money for a whole system upgrade.

What exactly is the purpose of this upgrade?

The P4 is an ancient CPU and may not be powerful enough to take full advantage of a faster GPU, depending on what you intend to run.

Yeah but better for what? It is hard to judge what the best choice for you is if you can't tell us the purpose of the upgrade.

That computer is 8 years old office PC and there's very little that can be done to make it gaming worthy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102958 is probably the most powerful card available that can be used on the old computer. It'll cost about twice as much as the old Dell GX280 is worth though...
