Wait, we who participate in these activities on a regular basis have "no cred" on said activities?

I know, I just played Mass Effect, so I think I'm going to go to the mall and unleash my biotic powers on innocent bystanders.

Because video games make me do shit like that.

    Who voted him in?

Maybe the enraged gamers in his state should rise up and remove his voice. What? I mean take him out of office by voting against him. A non-violent idea from someone who was 'addicted' to DOOM at age 7? Preposterous!

I'm also Canadian, home of a loud majority of crazies that enjoy watching people punching each other in the face repeatedly while chasing a disc of rubber around a pad of frozen water. Maybe we're just bred violent. Maybe people who have no clue should just stop spreading their ignorance in public like it's a PSY music video.

With all due respect to everyone in this thread, that guy can go eat a dick. He has the right to tell us to shut up when he gets a clue. Until then, he should shut his mouth instead of spewing nonsense and telling US to shut up. Seems intelligence isn't his strong point.

How dare you 'kill' those innocent pixels and steal their coins. Those pixels had pixels families to go home to, and pixel children to feed! Won't anyone think of the pixel children! BRB, calling Westboro Baptist Church to protest the pixel's funeral...

We have no cred in any situation. We're just the monsters they're trying to scapegoat.

So, we have no credibility when it comes to video games, but people who have little to no experience playing video games do? With the millions of people playing video games, you'd think us gamers would start burning shit to the ground, because we are supposedly dangerous, brainwashing individuals... I can't wait until 20 years from now when people finally get over the whole video game thing and find something else to complain about.

Gotta give him credit for trying to do something, eventhough it's stupid...

How about ban gun's and rifles? ^^

spilling water on yourself causes your clothes to be wet. you can repeat this and discover that yes, indeed, spilling water on yourself causing your clothes to be wet.

this is all i can think about when i hear media/lawmakers say that games cause people to be violent. if you hand a game to someone they don't go out and commit acts of violence. games do not cause it.

actually playing video games has been used to train people to kill lol.. and terrorist groups like al qaeda use them for propaganda and recruitment.

I dont believe video games make people violent and its never the sole reason for when people do do violent things but just like film, news, other media's, crappy gun controls etc etc they all help glorify violence which mixed with an unstable mind can cause violence......... sometimes.

Specially created games maybe, but if that's the sort of thing you're counting, books have been used to train people to kill, videos have been used to train people to kill, talking has been used to train people to kill, hell, I bet even Powerpoint has been used to train people how to kill. lol

Your regular run of the mill games do not train people how to kill. Playing an FPS does not give you any experience or knowledge that would allow you to operate weaponry or how to use it effectively, just like playing Guitar Hero doesn't help you to play the Guitar or become a Rockstar.

nope.. simple redub and slight changes to cod etc can do the trick. hell even WoW has been linked with recruitment with people posting links, websites etc in the game. I dont think video games are to be blamed but just dismissing everything because you dont think it does, is just as ignorant as the anti-video game crowd.

This man is insane. Sadly he is being backed by pseudo scientific research that researches short term increases in aggression when playing violent games. These researches often take the form of a Stanford Prison Experiment, where groups of people selectively obtain the power to humiliate or annoy their opponents, which creates a cycle of retribution. These experiments are then explained as a clear sign that games increase aggression. Often followed by the line that if it increases aggression short term, it might just as easily increase aggression long term just like smoking increases the chance of cancer (I'm not joking, they actually make that reference.

    See for an example:
    http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/violgametime.htm

I've actually mailed the person that wrote that article, because I used to be a very aggressive kid up til the point where I started gaming. Gaming had the exact opposite effect on me for the past 20 years and my list of games include D3D, Carmageddon 2, Quake 2 and 3, etc etc. I even invited him to come over to my place, since this person happens to teach at the University of Amsterdam, relatively close to where I live, but no dice. They would rather not burn their fingers on a 28 year old, long time hardcore 4 hours per day and 8 hours in the weekend gamer, but prefer to deal with French students that they force to practice rigged games that have a pre-scripted endresult.

As I said. These people are insane.

Edit: Also, I have never seen a single person explain the relation between aggression and planned execution of manslaughter. Because in my world, aggression is a loss of awareness and planned manslaughter requires awareness.

I wonder if people like him are trying to provoke gamers to the point that one of them breaks and actually kills one of them out of anger. That way they can say violent games are linked in school shootings and w/e else it can be pinned on for a excuse, even if the gamer didn't use a gun.

You think user generated content and people in chat channels in games invalidates my points? What you're describing can be done through a variety of mediums, but if someone said "Smartphones train people how to kill", or something like that, simply because somewhere out there there's an obscure app that details how to do it, it would be dismissed as sensationalist garbage, because that's exactly what it is.

Commercially available games do not train people how to kill, simple as that, and those are the games that are being called into question. Everything else is irrelevant.
