Drill rifles are never loaded with anything and usually cant even be fired, bolt or no bolt.

I would assume that the rifles a drill squad uses are better than the ones we used in training but the bolt was often sticky even at room temperature. Im not sure what you mean by operation because the bolt or the trigger group can malfunction just by using them(pulling back the bolt or pulling the trigger), it doesnt matter if the rifle can fire or not since that is usually done by removing the firing pin or filling the barrel.

I know, guns aren't perfect. By operation, I mean actual use, firing. I've never heard of a jam that didn't involve actually shooting a gun. Extreme cold conditions (like in Korea) can cause bolt lock, but that's not the same.

Drill guns that JROTC would use have the bolts welded and/or barrels filled with whatever compound. I would doubt the Marines, of all people, would make M1 Garands inoperable.

Yeah Im referring to jams affecting doing drill movements. There are movements where you operate the bolt and trigger mechanisms. They didnt have the guns to fire, they were there for show and twirling around.

The Marines would have no reason to keep operable M1s unless they use them for gun salutes. They can also use M14s and M16s for gun salutes and its reasonable to believe they have separate rifles set apart for that to keep maintenance down(they could have drill M1s and salute M1s).

Its pretty extreme to go from "I see Marines with drill rifles that dont have bolts" to "the President must think a Marine is going to shoot him."

Well yeah, I shoot guns all the time, I realize what does and doesn't move. Not to sound rude, but it looks like you're trying to make me look ignorant about guns.

Ceremonies are conducted with the M1 or M14, only non ceremony teams use the M16. Ceremonies are the only thing the M1 is used for, and there are separate M14's.

I've never seen a ceremony, or even JROTC event, where the bolts were removed. The kids have theirs sealed up. You can't disagree that removing the bolts isn't embarrassing or dishonoring them.

Im just making sure were talking about the same thing because what you said was confusing to what I know about rifle drill. Ive never used a drill rifle with the bolt welded shut.

Its definitely weird and I dont know if they were embarrassed because of it. They didnt talk to any of them which would have been a good idea before making up reasons why they were removed. You would have to know the actual reason the bolts were not used to determine the effect on the Marines. Right now this article dishonors the Marines by implying people think they would kill the president and the president for accusing him of distrusting marines with no real proof.

It's almost as if the Marine Corps isn't comprised of individuals among whom there might be one bad egg . . . or one idiot who didn't check his gun first. It's not that the Marine Corps (or any military branch) can't be trusted, but that the screening process is not 100% foolproof, and sometimes people go bad after they get in. Being a Marine doesn't make you a Perfect American after all.

Seriously, what's the big deal? Unless they're actually firing the gun in a salute or something, why do they need the bolt?

From a practical standpoint, there is nothing to be upset over here. However, it's a lot like somebody calling your mother a bitch. Technically they haven't harmed you in any way, but you're still gonna be offended.

It'd be one thing if the rifles were manufactured without bolts and nobody took the time to put bolts in. But that is not the case. For all of those rifles to be disabled, somebody involved in organizing this event had to have said something along the lines of "You know, I don't feel like marines can be trusted with live weapons."

Regardless of it's practical effect, it's still insulting.

I fail to see why this is important...

How does it make a difference at all?

Again, it's the same principle as somebody calling your mother a bitch. For the sake of practicality, they've done nothing to you. But you're still going to be insulted by it.

I am effing paranoid around guns..learned that lesson in the army. Always treat any gun as loaded. Anybody who gets a hardon shooting a machine gun or a machine pistol or a rifle instead of being respectful and scared is a crazy.

That from a guy with two years of service. You are free to disagree or laugh at me...I couldn't care less.
This seems almost as crazy as the most crazy gun nuts, no offense! ;P

You should be careful around guns, but being scared of them can be almost as troublesome as being reckless if you are to use them on a regular basis.

Is it a scandal in the US anytime someone doesn't have a working/loaded weapon?

No I'm not. I'm not a four year old who gets upset over such trivial things ... Nor should people be getting upset about this. Does this affect the ability for the Marines to perform their duties on Parade? Nope.

I know what Parris Island is, I just failed to see any remote comprehensible sense in that rambling.

Alright then. Let's say I walk up to you and your wife/daughter, look her right in the face, and say "Well would you look at this cunt-bag!"

You can be contrary all you want, but any normal person is going to take offense to that. Now, I did not physically impede you in any way, but I've still greatly dishonored someone you care about.

    Your analogy is poor.

The point is that doing something makes a statement. And that statement is "we're okay with visibly displaying our distrust towards our own soldiers".

There are a dozen ways those rifles could have been disabled. They chose the one way that is most obvious. It's not a huge deal, and I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but if I were one of those marines in the parade, I would have been offended.
