Is Sunsong Ranch the first step towards making gathering profs baseline?

In 5.2 they're increasing the output of profession seeds "to be more competitive with gathering professions" (or something to that effect). Is this a step towards giving all toons the ability to gather? Or simply trying to make things easier for toons without gathering professions?

Bit of both i suppose. Now people can farm on more than just that one alt with the profession, whilst still maintaining a larger income from the one who can gather. Just means its easier for everyone, which in my oppinion is the reason this game is becoming less appealing to me :S
With Fire and Brimstone I light my path.
With Pain and Shadow I smite my foes.
With Demon and Fel I raise my armies.
I AM WARLOCK, THE END OF YOU ALL.

Maybe this is blizzards answer to botting?

Agreed. I went with two crafting professions long ago and never looked back, even with having to buy mats for Alchemy and such. Farmville has lightened the load quite abit, though, and made it much more profitable to stay with two crafting.

I thought they were increasing the output of seeds to balance them against growing lotus.

With many other mmos coming with gathering as baseline, I think blizz should just finally give everyone the ability to gather. If you're a serious raider, you won't have a gathering profession, as they are not beneficial to your character.

Mining is fine for tanks. I was thinking of switching to enchanting so I could DE epics, but the benefit to me as a raider would be the same.

On topic, I've been experimenting with the various seeds. I found the herbs very nice for Darkmoon cards and amazing for Golden Lotus (I got too many, if anything, as I wanted to mill). The ore seems decent too: I quickly got the 30 trillium needed for the next part of the prince quest chain (tx to transmuting). The enchant mats seeds are very useful for getting crystals for weapon enchants as there is no "gathering" profession to compete with it. The leatherworking one seems very unrewarding (one leather per plant) - for some reason, exotic leather is very cheap on my AH so I decided it would be better to devote the farm to other things. I haven't seriousy tried cloth, but like enchanting, it might be useful when I am no longer gathering enough cloth from ordinary questing to regularly make silk.

Except most people have more than one character, so they tend to have a specialist gatherer.

I think the farm is a big experiment really, both for player housing (Is there demand? Does it encourage players to go into the world or keep them "at home"?), and a test for a change to resource-gathering, gimping your character by taking a gathering prof or rolling an alt purely for gathering mats don't really seem like "fun and interesting mechanics", at least...
