[Movies] Good Budget/Direct to DVD movies

There are quite a lot of movies that are made directly for DVD rather than attempting a theatrical release.

Most of them feature a monster and lots of cleavage and are as crap as they sound.

There are also many movies with very limited budgets that still attempt to tell a story.


I wanted to dedicate this thread to recommending good low-budget/direct to DVD movies that are worth-while and not just embarrassing to watch.

A movie about a journey through a contaminated zone inhabited by alien creatures. While it may sound like a typical monster movie it's more than that and as much a metaphor about US immigration as it is a "travel" film.

It's a movie about a band of Vikings landing in North America and encountering Indians. What I like about the film is the style, setting and focused story-telling. It's clear about what it wants to be and is exactly that.

i was totally underwhelmed with monsters..

id recommend some guy who kills people. The film is about a man who has recently been released from a mental hospital after being tortured. Soon after coming home the people who tortured him start dying one by one.

cant really think of any other recent ones.. ill have to think.

This is a wonderful movie , very low budget but absolutely entertaining : The Man from Earth . Watch it , you will not regret it !

Equilibrium wasn't direct to DVD. But it's a good movie regardless.

I liked Monsters. It was a cool twist to the usual invasion movies.

Seen a couple decent ones on Netflix recently. None that are really must see movies.

The Big White was entertaining. Robin Williams and a few other big names.

Stake Land was a great vamp movie in a genre played out. One of the better attempts at this type of movie since Blade.

Pathfinder was a theatrical release, but it was a huge bomb and only had a short run. Shame, as it was enjoyable. It's based on a graphic novel and iirc, is supposed to be fairly faithful to the source material.

Here's a suggestion or 2:

Damage-Starring Stone Cold Steve Austin, as a down on his luck guy who gets into the underground cage fighting scene. Now, despite how it sounds, it's actually more of a character driven drama than a pure action flick, and a lot of the plot revolves around the interaction between Austin and his friend/manager, played by Walton Goggins(who you KNOW is awesome if you ever watched The Shield or Justified).

Someone else mentioned Blood & Bone, I'll second that, if you like MMA/martial arts type movies, this one has some great action, as do the Undisputed movies.

Universal Soldier:Regeneration is actually WAY better than you would expect. It's a lot more...grim than the original, with better action, and it basically pretends the other sequels don't exist.
