Question Returning to GW2 for pvp mostly

    Hello,

After deciding I've quit WoW for now and just hearing about the leaderboards on GW2 I felt like checking up and trying it out again.

Now the prime resons I took a break was because WoW was too much in my system, thus having no room for GW2 at all, also I couldn't find my right class.
With WoW I was a big bad altoholic, having had every class at level 90.
Now I prefer to stick with one proffesion, but can't really seem to find my twist. My first choise was Mesmer, but as far as I recall, they have a few odd weapon setups (EG: stave) I heared it's really good but I think my mesmer has sword / pistol or sword scepter right now. Not sure what to do

Pvp isn't balanced, it's just as bad as world of CC craft right now with bunker ele's. But if you insist, prepare for an extremely boring meta.

If you prefer large scale pvp I'm sure WvW will be to your liking, zerg city.

How horribly negative. WvW is awesome, unless your world sucks, and I don't know if any one server just downright sucks. Maybe the ones in the lowest tier?

Haven't played much sPvP, but I doubt it's anywhere near as unbalanced as people would have you believe. Forums are always whiny about balance in games, even though they could likely beat all the unbalanced professions if they spent their time getting better at their own profession, and not care too much about everybody else's.

I'm on Kaineng, simple fact = WvW is about zergs, because ANet put a limit on AoE zergs dominate everything.

Another fact, spvp is extremely unbalanced right now and the meta hasn't really changed since launch. In short, the pvp aspect of the game is in total stalemate and isn't changing any time soon. Just ask any pvper... I'm r28 and most of that comes from only tourney pvp with my guild. I'm not trying to be overly negative just warning him what he's going to face. The same teams over and over, same build, same strat, same everything. And if you don't play the same meta you will stand zero chance of win. Pvp is disgusting compared to GW1. I would stick to pve personally, until they fix this.

7 months of the same unbalanced bullshit is enough to drive any pvper crazy.

It's only about zergs if you join WvW looking for one, there's many a guild roaming borderlands for some GvG action.

GvG in GW2 is just a ton of players throwing themselves into a pile of AoE and watching who goes down first... probably the most boring experience I've ever had in WvW, and yes I've "GvG'd" a few times... lol.

A well executed zerg is a beautiful thing (and fun too!)

It's very confusing if you're not familiar with the type of fighting, but please don't dismiss this type of gameplay simply as "zergfest". Sure, the players are using a lot of AoE attacks, but the placement of that AoE is crucial, as is the positioning of the players even when they're not engaged. There's a great deal of tactics, skill and organization involved in fights like these, even if it is difficult to spot for those who aren't so used to the style of fighting.

There's AoE strategy. In the opening there's a lot of feinting, changing directions, false retreats and whatnot as they come together, each side attempting to get the other side to waste its AoE or Veils prematurely.

And when the AoE's go down the commander has to decide whether to pull his group away from a disadvantageous situation (which you see a lot when Timewarp goes down), or to stay and press whatever advantage he perceives he has.

And this is made harder if the group becomes too split up and scattered, but that tends to happen somewhat as everyone dodges attacks or moves out of AoE toward whatever edge they're nearest to. And then there are some burst/finisher AoE's like Ele's Teleport->Churning Earth that can't be run out of only blocked or otherwise mitigated.

If the group gets too split up they'll outrange each other's protective AoE, giving the opposition an opportunity to pick off stragglers.

Add in terrain differences, siege differences, objective differences (attacking or defending) split forces - some pushing towers, some distracting at another gate, some resupplying to reinforce the main zerg, some split to take supply camps before the tick or just to cut off supply from getting into a tower. Consider builds intended for running supply, scouting, dokyak sniping, dolyak escorting, siege shielding, open field combat etc., and you start to understand the complexity of this war.

Really fascinating to watch and analyze, imho - and even more fun to play.

(last night our server built an army of golems. excellent fun)

.. Placing an AoE on the ground is considered skill?

    Interesting.

Also this talk of "commanders" and "group strategy" doesn't exist in a zerg-o-rama like WvWvW unless you're doing it solely with your guild. Sure, some people will but really if I'm playing a game for fun I'm going to be going around doing whatever the Hell I like, win or lose I'm not going to listen to someone who calls himself "commander", mostly because that person is probably a ... in real life.

Pfft playing with your guild. Join your server's Teamspeak and play the real game.

It doesn't take long to figure out which commanders are educated in the Art of War and know how to lead their servers to victory and those that had a 100g to splurge on a blue dorito chip.

So far they havent solved the leaderboards to work properly, and also there's an issue with matchmaking, and also still no solo queues. So personally Im waiting a bit longer before returning.
Viable build for mesmer still is shatterbuild, and sword/pistol or sword/sword and staff or greatsword is your best options. You can check up Xeph on twitch.tv he's good at making viable mesmer builds

I dunno. There's nothing in GW2 that requires a guild. Not like I care about 'guildness' when there's 0 endgame. I can complete everything pretty much on my own. I think it's hilarious to think people actually care what others think during WvWvW. My experience of it is akin to my experience doing WoW worldbosses - trying to coach and herd the masses just ends in you looking like a pretentious prick. That's pretty much how I would view anyone who wants to label themselves a "commander" or "war veteran". I think even giving people those titles damages your precious game, it makes others think "wow, this game must be full of remedial c...s."

PS: while I understand the use of profanity is against the rules Stephen Fry says to ban any word in the English language due to someone's feelings being hurt is a dangerous road, leading invariably to communism and/or the destruction of beautiful words.

Not a very sociable person are you...

The game labels people Commanders, some people buy it to troll or just because they can and some buy it because they want to help lead their server to victory, there's nothing wrong with organizing people to defend / attack places.

PS: This isn't Stephen Fry's website.

Thinking that you don't need a guild because there's no endgame may be where you got confused. It may not be the type of endgame you like (raids) but there's certainly activities that:

    1) Require a guild
    2) Provide gear progression
    3) Escalate in difficulty
    4) Offer premium rewards

    Sounds like endgame to me.

There is everything wrong with it. What gives some snotty nosed 14 year old with an ego trip the right to command 30-40 people? Because he has a badge. People have bought this game with their money. They should be allowed to play how they want. That's what WvWvW is (excluding GvG here which is an important point): it's people having fun doing whatever they want with little or no care for anyone else. To deny this is just silly. Do you seriously think WvWvW requires any modicum of skill compared to say, sPvP or tournament PvP?

Lazuli is correct: PvP in GW2 is an unbalanced mess. There's nothing right with it at the moment. You can deny that all you want but really I can't see how anything can change personally. They need to basically overhaul 3 or 4 classes to get PvP right which isn't going to happen.

I guess I'm old fashioned and conservative then: end game for me is 12-16 hours raiding hardcore.

It's simple, nobody can force anybody to do anything in WvW only the people who choose to follow a Commander do so, simply insulting all people who choose to take up that role is petty to say the least.

Totally understand. Was there myself for a few years. In fact, when I first got into this game I thought I would miss raiding. Much to my pleasant surprise I've not had even a twinge and I know I could never go back.

The "14 year old snotty brat" comment is way off track. Some of these guys have extensive military backgrounds and a wealth of knowledge about both real war and game tactics. This isn't some 10 minute WoW BG with kids crying "Let them win" the minute the match starts, this is a concerted effort by entire servers, guild alliances, small strike teams and solo roamers - thousands of players across 4 maps in a week long war.

(Oh, and did I mention it's FUN?)

One word, one game, and the clones of that one game. The deep and interesting question is obviously what made raids what they are. The essence of the experience CAN be translated into different things. I find WvW to have carried that "raiding spirit" rather well into PvP, being massive and social/with more people.

Most people don't have time for that and thus enjoy the more casual end game that Gw2 has to offer.
