New Hostess owners will refuse to hire union workers

I commend them for trying to keep costs down.

Maybe now they can afford to take Funny Bones and put real peanut butter in them again and make them amazing.

Edit: Forgot Drake's had been sold off in the liquidation. Dammit all. Guess I still can't buy funny bones.

Meh, it's their business, they can be complete bastards about it if they like. Interestingly however, it was rather fascinating reading about the changes between the 30s and now. The Cold War propaganda really did work fairly well. As Steinback was quoted to have said:

Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires

I had no idea who you meant until I read twinkie makers.

That is just sad. I hope no one even considers to get work there then, but i guess people will be forced to with no alternative. Well they are scumbags then, so lets hope that customers will take a stand and boycut.

Are you so sure their workers will get a raw deal without a union?

You're almost certainly wearing at least one item made by the hands of children. Just sayin. Boycotts don't work unless people actually stop buying the product.

But that's not the case here. When Hostess went bust, who cried for the workers? No one, that's who. Who cried for the Twinkies? Everyone.

You can join a union, but your employer isn't required to negotiate with them unless they are voted in by a federally recognized secret vote.

They're attempting to make it much much easier to authorize a union through their ridiculous card check legislation.

I doubt i am wearing much made by kids, since Denmark boycutts a lot of that stuff by default, and i mainly buy things produced here. Also, i don't care about twinkies at all, i have had one once when i was on holiday over there, but i thought it tasted horribly. Here in Denmark we recently had a case where a restaurant was forcing the workers to join a certain union or they would get fired. The restaurant ended up shutting down due to buycutts, and other unions (the ones the workers were originally in) taking a stand and protesting, and standing outside the restaurant urging people to go somewhere else.

I had a twinkie once, at best it was mediocre and I do not understand why people rave about them so much.

They're just an icon of sorts, for better or worse. Nobody is saying they're a life changing meal. This is post #2 where you're trying really hard to look like you're too fucking awesome to eat twinkies, we get it, move on, you'll get to 10k posts all the same.

I have never been in a union and the people I know who have been aren't examples that make me want to be in a union. The idea is good, the execution is like everything else and totally corrupt.

Don't forget the part where the place goes bankrupt, and then "suddenly" burns down with the owner inside + him being accused of the insurrance fraud

The word you want to use is "have" not "of".

It's cultural more than anything else. If you grew up with them you'd probably be sad to see them go, too.

Actually it’s almost quite the opposite in some states. If your state has enabled the "right to work act" then you may choose to join the union or not, depending on if the AFL-CIO has recognized your union. If your state doesn’t have "right to work" and the AFL-CIO has a union on file, you're forced to comply with union dues and regulations.

Unions are an interesting and regrettably necessary beast in the US. If an employer acts appropriately and manages its resources appropriately there is never a need for a union. However this is more often not the case because when the chips are down most businesses believe it’s all or nothing and sacrifices anyone and everything to preserve their product and market position. Once the "human factor" is removed for sake of profit things go bad. I know 2 people very close to me who have both worked for different companies for 22+ and 27 years only to be "Laid off". Essentially being "laid off" and not "fired" absolves their employer from having to pay pensions or severance. Neither of these two had a union to fall back and after their entire "working life" basically got told "take it easy but we don’t want to hold up our end of the barging because that would cost too much money". Its cases like this that make you realize how seriously necessary unions are in the US.
money's such a good medium of exchange until you lose focus on the fact that it's a medium of exchange in favor of thinking of it as an end in itself?

Well i did not need to put out the whole story to get my point across, but yeah, the owner was an idiot to say the least.

If it saves the owners a cent, they would do anything to the workers.

Good. No reason for a business to harm itself by inviting unionization upon itself.

As for the workers being "exploited", if you don't like what the offer you, quit. Liberty works two ways.

Well they sort of brought it upon themselves, and now they have a reputation for being disruptive.

I can only see one post from Rich (the one you quote) stating he didn't like twinkies. You drawing conclusions where you think he deems himself "too fucking awesome" speaks more of your pyscological state than his...

On another note, I didn't have a clue who Hostess was until I read twinkie maker either!

That's awesome! Free market wins over communism. Liberal capitalism-haters will certainly be enraged by this and whenever they're mad it means America is doing the right thing. I'd love to see all unions abolished and union leadership jailed on RICO charges.

Completely understandable, I remember when Hostess were going busy and the union workers kept going on strike, bit of a stupid move to strike against the company they work for when its going bust, I see why they're doing it
