Just bought GW2, how is the community doing? Is the game still alive?

I quit WoW recently because I don't like MoP. I don't plan on playing it again so I went ahead and tried some other MMOs since I was mainly playing Starcraft and Dota. First I tried SWTOR since it's free. I couldn't help but feel like I was playing a single player game as I kept leveling up. So now I'm trying GW2 probably the best contender. I didn't feel like waiting for the F2P weekend so I just went ahead and bought it.

My biggest question is, does the game still have a lot of people playing it and in general is it a worthy investment of my time that won't become another washed up dead MMO?

you can see a lot of people playing, especially on high populated servers, when it comes to leveling you'll see a good number of people leveling alts on low lvl zones. higher zones at least on my server (CD) not so much.

keep in mind tho this game's not everyones cup of tea
    good luck

Took these screenshots about an hour ago. This is in a midlevel zone on an overflow server. This overflow had overflows. It's overflowception

Busting at the seams with players, fastest growing MMO ever made in the west, expanding into China this year, blahblahblah. Yeah, it's not going anywhere.

I just bought the game two weeks ago and while I'm only lvl 60 I've seen enough to say it doesn't seem dead at all to me. Lion's Arch (which I think is like the Dalaran, I could be wrong, just my impression so far) is very populated and I'm not even on a high pop server. I usually see 30+ people at events like Shadow Behemoth and The Shatterer even at 3am. I've only done two dungeons however I haven't spent more than 5 minutes looking for people. Pretty fast for a non LFD system. ( I didn't use the popular website either, just asked in map). I don't have any perspective from lvl 80 though. Thought I'd share though since I just bought the game though.

I will say two things. 1.) I totally feel like I've gotten my moneys worth already at lvl 60. Very good leveling experience. 2.) With that being said, don't forget Guild Wars 2 is NOT a carbon copy of WoW - you have to dodge attacks and there is no trinity. My first dungeon was different just because I wasn't used to someone not taking all the damage. If you just do hearts thinking they are quests you will run out of content in 2 minutes. Make sure you are doing events and try a dungeon when you can. There are tons of different ways to level and if you limit yourself to questing because you are you used to it you will be out of content at lvl 8.

    Enjoy.

This got a lot of responses and it seems very positive. I mean I already bought it so I just wanted to make sure it was worth it lol

Just one more question though, I love big servers my comp and internet can handle anything these games can throw at me so I was wondering whats the biggest/best PvP server? I live on the US east coast

For big events, pretty much. If you go by trackers like Raptr or XFire, GW2 is easily the 2nd busiest MMO in the West.

This is 10 in the morning.

Go into WvW primetime and it's players as far as the eye can see.

Knadra, one warning about the leaderboards: On a top tier server there are 3+ hr queues to get into WvW on Friday night reset.

Tons of dungeons. No raids. We have Guild Missions and Fractals.

That's kinda sorta how open world content is designed in GW2, BovD. Events, not quests. :P

Players flock to the events. Maps go into overflow. Happens everyday all day long.

But I find it highly amusing how you guys say well those players don't count cuz they're doing events or those players don't count cuz they're doing Fractals or those players don't count cuz they're in Lion's Arch or those players don't count cuz they're in WvW or those players don't count cuz they're in Super Adventure Box, etc. It's like you expect there to be a player standing by every lonely tree out in Timberline Falls all day long just waiting for you to stop by and join them. Players will never be spread across the land evenly like so much peanut butter. Not in this game, not in any other.

But they've done an amazing job of keeping the all the maps relevant, they are never empty when events are happening and even when I'm running an alt through maps there's always other players.

It's like you're still missing the point. GW2 has events, not quest hubs. Events are the indicator of the game's activity.

I've been playing a little over a week and it's true, events are what will draw players. Champion spawns/World Bosses and things related to the current Living World seem to be the biggest draws out in the open world. You'll see a number of people in the lower-level zones doing other events too. I'm seeing less in the mid-level ones I've been doing, but for me the thing is that it's GOOD to see other people, as opposed to WoW where other people mean WANT TO STEAL MY PRECIOUS AWAY, STOPS THEM STOPS THEM! and similar.

Besides that, the world is absolutely gorgeous, and it breathes. I love walking through an area and seeing the NPC's talk, hear them discuss what's going on around them with others, even to make humorous comments, such as an Asura asking a Sylvari if she fell off the turnip cart yesterday, and her reply being 'No, I fell off the tree five days ago, I only saw a turnip cart yesterday' or hearing a Charr complain about slaughtering cattle for a stupid made-up holiday, called 'Meattoberfest'.

The event doesn't matter BovD, it could be the Shatterer spawning every 2-3 hours all day every day and you still get the crowds. The only thing that makes today different is today they removed culling in PvE and now we can see everyone.

Just like when they lifted culling at Jormag a couple weeks back and we could see the hundreds of players there for that one, particular, recurring event.

Gw2 is doing great. In fact it feels more "alive" than WoW by a lot.
