    Will WoW ever become F2P?

Long lasting former WoW player here, retired for a year now.

Anyway I am recently contemplating returning however after a year away I have been spoiled by F2P MMORPGs, something I was against until playing some very fun titles. Now I am beginning to think that mandatory subscriptions perhaps may be a negative feature. It's certainly a factor in why I haven't returned personally - I'm beginning to think perhaps F2P MMORPGs are the way forward because they certainly aren't lacking players... In fact I often see more players in these F2P games than Orgimmar 2010...

    What's your opinion?

I find it doubtful man. They haven't even raised the trail level cap even after raising the end level cap to 90.

sure. when it is no longer supported by blizzard and nobody wants to play it any more.
There is no Bad RNG just Bad LTP

How much does the 800 pound gorilla charge?

The same as when it was the 1000 pound Gorilla cause everyone else is still much smaller.

As I respond to all the rest such threads:
When WoW goes F2P I will stop playing.
    PM me weird stuff :3

It won't happen for a long time. Even 1-2 million subs is very profitable.

As you can see there are plenty of threads that could have answered that question. WoW won't go F2P until it has to. Which for most is when when they hit the 1.5 million subs area. If it does go F2P as I say in everyone of those threads, I will never play again.

Its possible, as much as people deny it, the game is stagnating, though the new expansion will probably bring more players back again, the only people who truly know is Blizzard, they obviously have thought about it since they were testing a cash shop on the PTS. Will it go F2P soon? probably not, will it go F2P once Blizzard releases another major title? possibly. All I can personally say is that I don't think it'll happen any time soon, but will it happen eventually? Most certainly.

Sure hope not. All games that went F2P immediatly went down the drain if they didnt before.

Wow still has a few years of prime time.

That's also the addictive side of WoW, The payment, Not for everyone of course but for some out there, after paying for 2-3 years, your account has been worth for you something, you don't want to lose your account so you keep paying and playing.

Once WoW go f2p, people will care less about their account, and the activity will drop.

No. It is the other way around. The f2p games would kill to have wows sub numbers if they could.
    Aye mate

    From my gut feeling.

    Will WoW *ever* go F2P?
Yes, most certainly, but Blizzard will most likely wait until they can deploy a successor MMO in a time when WoW won't receive any major content updates anymore.

Is there a chance this will happen while WoW is still *the* MMORPG out there?
Most likely not. The only chance for this to happen is pretty much a sudden, total breakdown of subscriber numbers below at least one million, if not less. But don't get me wrong, that's nowhere on the horizon.

Problem is, WoW's still selling like hot buns. Even though numbers are on the way down it's still so far more than what other games have, it would be just silly to go away from subscriptions while people are still willing to pay in these numbers.

Your rights as a consumer begin and end at the point where you choose not to consume, and not where you yourself influence the consumed goods.

Translation: if you don't like a game don't play it.

    Ever? Yes

    Soon? No

Not for next expansion at least, probably not for next two expansions.

IMO, if something doesn't drastically change in WoW (like on the scale of SW:g's NGE/CU in terms of scale but not in outcome) I can see wow going f2p...

But that is unlikely to happen in the near future (depending on how other games release in the next 3-10 years)

Blizz was profitable in vanilla, planned 5 expansions back then, and estimated their player base to be 500K to 1 million players.

    They've trumped that 10 fold.

So if they weren't planning on being F2P back then, why would they kill off the highest profitable MMO on earth, ever?

Blizz will not take wow f2p. They may, however, create a new f2p mmo separate from wow, with a completely different scheme/theme to draw in other players from outside (Titan/blizzard allstars, hearthstone, etc).

    Not before WoW2 launches.

Having a larger player base != success.

All due respect, that statement is not true at all. GW2, Rift, LoTRO and (somewhat) SWToR are all benefitting from the F2P model.

Looking into the future my bet is that the F2P model (with microtransactions) will take over. Also, I personally think the crowd funding will make it's entry, ie. "We have this SUPER HARD über 20 raid instance that we would like to make" - then you'd fund if you were a raider and not if you was not. This way a lot of content would be what the players "really" wanted.

    Pure guessing though

    Z.
