Good lord, people. He's not talking about the WoW icon itself. He's talking about what's behind it.
I agree that it doesn't really mean much, but stop focusing so much on the icon itself.
OMG i think people's tinfoil hats are melting. it's an icon with no meaning. sheesh
Dark below confirmed because it's dark icon.
You can try to fit me in a box, only to see me burst out of it.
Azshara Expansion Confirmed!!!
The MoP one has bamboo forests in the background.
The new one has the Maelstrom in the background.

Did the classic icon have the Maelstrom? If yes, it's meaningless. If not, then it's obvious what's about to happen.
The graphic designer didn't just roll some dice to put the Maelstrom there.
Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else see like a faint blob/shadow on the left side that looks like the Eastern Kingdoms continent?
Totally new expansion. Also Half Life 3 confirmed.
Infracted. Please, you can share your reply and opinions without using such over used meme.

The night is dark and full of terrors...
Yes, that looks exactly like the vanilla wow icon that has been sitting on my desktop for ~9 years.
New expansion clearly confirmed.
Slaying 8bit dragons with 6 pixel long swords since 1987.
Maelstrom confirmed.
But seriously, we already had a maelstrom expansion, it was called cataclysm. It ended up being the portal to deepholm where Deathwing broke into the world, we flew through it to get to deepholm, it was even where the final battle with deathwing took place.
Does nobody pay attention?

Probably just a branding move to keep their icons consistent, thus going with the basic icon. They've been doing a lot of UI/UX work with the battle.net app and looks like it was a part of that.
Also it's a lot sharper on my HD devices like retina display apple products.
