My personal experience from beta is that i don't have any need to visit Ashran or any other capital city. Not like we have a need right now to be in the shrines, but at least for me... the place to simply hang around doing nothing has become my garrison. And for utility, there are several buildings that can give the same utility that a capital city has, and since our garrisons are in a better place than Ashran... yes... i don't think that the capital will die, but we'll see less people.

Gotta love how they removed flying because they wanted to get us out in the world, and then made the continent's focal point a solo instance.
You have level 100 content in every zone, i'm not saying that they made it interesting outside the daily quest, but hey... there is stuff to do in those places even without the quest.

I'm sure once they get /1 General chat working in garrisons that'll become the new trade chat... and everyone will keep their hearth assigned to shrine for the best portal system.

The trade chat restriction is shithouse and has never been a good thing, it should've been removed years ago.

You're assuming they won't remove most of Shrine's portals in 6.0.

Don't really see what would make garrisons such a hot place to be at all the time, to be honest. Sure, we'll want to visit it every day or so, and it's nice to be in, but there's stuff to do outside.

Outside, yes; the problem is, what is there to do in the capitols that you can't do in your garrison? Trade chat and seeing random people, that's about it.

I don't know if I'll spend my time in garrisons over SW, but I absolutely will use my garrison as an excuse to avoid the Ashran capitol as much as is humanly possible.

Unless the trading post can do MORE than just have an AH, it seems like a waste of a plot just to save yourself minor inconvenience. But really, AFKing in a city is something I've done less in MoP than in previous expansions, and I wouldn't be worried about doing it even less in WoD.

1: Allows the trade of crafting reagents for garrison resources and vice versa, for a profit!
2: Enables access to the auction house. Also grants access to the Shattari Defense or Laughing Skull factions.
3: Increases reputation gain in Draenor by 20%.

They probably won't make places like Stormwind or Org desolate but chances are places that already kind of where, I.e other faction cities will become vacant lots.

Yep. Mud pits with generic buildings. If these pass as capital cities, to hell with them. Reign in the new age of empty capitals.
Crikey, that's horrible. It looks just like that Keep Varian established in Krasang Wilds in a MoP patch: small, bland and unremarkable. The more I learn of this expansion, the more cheap and ugly it looks. Shattrath and Dalaran were quite wonderful, awe-inspiring cities. Even the MoP shrines, which were kind of mediocre imo, are full of intricate and impressive artwork.

I haven't seen a more disappointing and primitive downgrade in WoWs game design since Tol Barad replaced Wintergrasp.

Also, were they not wanting to link our alts to our garrison so we don't have the same issue as with the farm and the whole, wanting a ton of alts with a max farm thing?
I have found questing + rares provide more than sufficent materials (without using the beta chest).
Being beta that may change, but atleast for now there is no issue skipping the lumber mill.
I would assume trading post to be the strongest choise if you only have a main as you can simply buy any missing mats without needing a single gathering prof.
You can also trade proffession mats for garrison materials (random material each day, repeatable Q) <- allows you to earn way more gathering recources than a lumber mill ever could. But it comes at the cost of farming time/ a big purse.

For the auction house in the trading post; that perk will take some time getting operational as the quest to repair the vendor appears to be quite lengthy.
You need like 5 specific items (all created out of 3 parts) so 15 individual drops in total. Last I looked nobody had found any of them (or knew where they dropped), so probably not implemented yet. But the quest is there, just cant accept it.
Might be world drops (that could suck balls), hopefully its from various hc dungeons / scenarios or even challange modes (big incentive to actually be arsed with CM).

Every item has a place where the components drop. Universal translator for instance needs 3 drops from dungeons. One of the other pieces needs 3 drops from raids, etc.

I've personally had one of the pieces for the translator from a dungeon boss before the last wipe.

    To orginal poster.

No the garrisons are going to give you a RTS feel; thats how they are intended. I like that. I have always been a fan of hanging out in racial capitals. I think death knights would be either @ acherus and UC. lol

Loving all these opinions, keep 'em coming. I also now have a better understanding of garrisons which helps as i'm not in the beta!

Can't you get an AH at your garrison through the trading post?
Storehouse gives you Transmog and Void Storage on top of Gbank and normal bank. It's only Trade Chat you don't have if you pick the right buildings.

No people will still hang out in OG or SW:
    - AH
    - Tradechat
    - Socialising/Chatting
    - Showing off

cant do any of that in your garrison

you can do ALL but trade chat in your garrison. as has been posted in this thread already, might wanna glance at a few posts so you know whats being discussed.

many people will have avoided the cities for several weeks or months straight, then one day have that feeling of "wow, i havent been to a faction city in FOREVER! i should grace them with my presence for 15 or 20 mins". either that or you get a new mount or something and your friends list/guild is all offline, so you feel compelled to show off in a city. again shortly after you will take off and head either out to do daily stuff or your garrison will beckon your attention again, and poof, no more city.

of course it all depends on how much time is required before your garrison is level 3 and you have collected all the buildings you want.

The auction house in the garrison looks like it's going to be a robot, which tells me engineering only. The auctioneer in Warspear is flesh and blood, however. I expect a lot of the foot traffic in Orgrimmar/Stormwind to transfer to the new cities if that remains as it is.

Oh god like trolls would ever give up trade chat. Unless they put trade chat in Garrisons, to which yes, capital cities will die.
