It's called Moderation ; read em.
Yeah, Moderation on a tiny corner of the internet on a fansite. That is not the rules of the internet, nor does it stop or prevent people from being assholes. Infact, rules like moderation are why some people keep breaking them, because they exist.

Edit: And you know what? When people are forced to use their real names, there will still be assholes. There are assholes in literally every fucking corner of life. If you can't handle that in the 15+ years you've been on the internet, then you should probably take a break, or maybe, just maybe, get a life =)

There are no worse scum in this world than fascists, rebels and political hypocrites.
Donald Trump is only like Hitler because of the fact he's losing this war on all fronts.
Apparently condemning a fascist ideology is the same as being fascist. And who the fuck are you to say I can't be fascist against fascist ideologies?

You keep citing a fictional quote of "getting a life" - What are you, 14?

And seeing your rebel attitude, i'd wager you yield that mindset. So, yer not worth my time.

My point is I don't trust everyone. Say I were to post my opinion and someone doesn't like it. They can find out information about me anonymously and could do serious harm to me, whether it is financial, work relatef, or to my own personal safety.

They can do all of that anonymously so long as they don't post. Do you want to not only give up privacy, but also safety for little benefit? I sure as fuck don't want that, no matter how well intentioned. I simply don't want to risk my safety to crazy people.

Oh damn, you're so great coming from a guy with "PvPHeroLulz" as a forum name, but that aside. You calling me 14 because you can't refute my argument, that doesn't come off a bit ironic to you, because we are debating people being assholes online and anonymity and blah blah blah.

Isn't what "yer" doing, exactly what a troll would do on the internet? isn't that against the forum rules?! Oh mah gerd I better report that, it's my civic duty as a member of the internet.

P.S.: It wasn't even a quote, I just like tell people that are behind a stupid idea why that idea is stupid and proceed to tell them to get a life, because I can. That's the beauty of the internet, mate.

Nah. Mostly I think it is a result of companies wanting to have their cake and eat it too. They want the increased traffic and engagement that a commenting system provides, but they don't want to put resources into adequately moderating it. If they did that, they could enforce whatever commenting policy they wanted without a scheme like this.

It would work somewhat, though you would also lose a lot of perfectly good posters who aren't comfortable with a lack of anonymity. Whether that's worth it is ultimately their choice.

Would you also like if MMO champion implemented a similar change?
I'm not in favor but I wouldn't care that much, really. On most social apps my username is my name or close to my name anyway.

How would your posting habits change if you had your real name as your user name?
Mine wouldn't change. As I said, I already do basically that on a lot of platforms. I mean what I say and whether or not it is attached to my name isn't relevant to my saying it. If I would be scared for somebody to know I said something, I won't say it.

That said, would it cut down on those trolls and take a bite out of asshole comments? Probably so. There are lots of great reasons for anonymity but there's no doubt that it's also used by cowards as a shield for behavior they choose to engage in but are afraid of consequences of having done so.

In a country where there is free speech, I shouldn't have to worry about keeping my job for disagreeing with a woman online, not harassing, not threatening, just disagreeing.

I only use my real name online when I am talking with people I know and trust.

Personally, I'm a lot less concerned that some internet troll showing up at my house than with someone I know IRL following me all over the internet. Or the guy I argued with on MMOC deciding he wants to harass me on Facebook too.

Not everything has to be nefarious, or illegal, or douchey to screw you over if somebody else knows it about you.
This is precisely why I don't like social networking. They tell you not to mention your marital status, political affiliation, religious affiliation, etc. with potential employers, yet you know the second you walk out they're going to google you. You mention any of that stuff anywhere and it's fair game.

People who clamor for "real names online" are just on a fuckin' witch hunt. Easier to lash out at someone then because they hurt your feelings and burst your safe space bubble.

It has always spread throughout history. I've seen some non-anonymous KKK members on Facebook before. All non-anonymity would do is get rid of the 12-year old 'lol rape your mom' idiots.

I know a lot of employers who'd see me as just being a 'WoW-Addicted nerd' because of the stigma that came from WOW in general thanks to south park and news stories of people being addicted to it and dying.

How can people be racist, bigoted, idiots, etc. if they have to use their real identities? At least they know that they have to be anonymous to show their true nature without repercussion.

I don't see how they can enforce the requirement of real names. Also I don't think it's going to cut down on negative behaviors like the CBC expects it will.

That's as much an indictment for the shitty people who do say malignant horse shit as it is for the people on the other side who use every piece of critical opinion or disagreement spoken to label someone as racist/bigoted idiots without understanding what that even means.

If its anything like how commenting on articles in the U.S works, people wil creep on your profiles and still insult you, only this time using personal information!

So yeah, I dont think removing anonymity has enough of a cost / benefit ratio to actually make it worth it.

This will change a few responses on their site:

"go kill yourself" = "I disagree with your opinion"
"are you fucking retarded?" = "I don't think you have considered all your options yet"
    "lol" = "that was amusing"
"u mad?" = "I think you are too worked up on the subject"

It would make the community a bit nicer I guess.

It really won't though. Facebook already has people using real names amd people are still toxic on there. It just gives more information to mud sling with :/.

We've come to this because people are assholes. To be precise, anonymous people are assholes with zero regard to what they're spewing and no accountability.

It takes massive amount of time to admin something as large as a popular news site (some guys on YT disable comments nowadays simply because it's nothing but garbage). Every minute you have to censor some asshats porn picture links on comments is one minute less you can spend on something productive.
