It was an example that everyone and their mother could relate to that contained basically every shitty part of being owned by another human. Why is this some contest of "which is worse"?

If I didn't provide an example, far more people would be trying to point out exemptions, such as the prison system at times. This place is honestly worse than tumblr at times when it comes to people bitching over little things, lol.

Don't forget the vast majority of slaves didn't come to the USA, they also went to South America and Europe. There were also slaves in Africa, and in the USA black people also owned slaves as there were many plantations owned by blacks, and further, slavery was adopted when a black man sued to keep his black indentured worker forever, hence creating slavery in the USA.

    The more you know!

Rofl, the American slave trade. You mean the African slave trade right, because it sure wasn't Americans catching and selling those people.

I could see it justified on some levels for committing crime. Not on an individual basis but a means to pay off one's debt to society. Indentured to the state if you will. Arguably a better alternative then letting certain, rehabilitatible people rot in jail.

Slavery is a little bit interesting. If you are free to be a slave are you really a slave?

I hate to say it but some people prefer a slave existence to a free existence. If a home were provided to you along with food and spending money for your off time and you didn't have to worry about anything else some people would find that existence comforting and stable.

People connote slavery with being tortured or beaten into submission but that doesn't have to be. If there were laws barring that wouldn't that be similar to the socialist utopia we are all hoping for? Everyone has a job and has a roof over their heads just in exchange you are slave.

    What do you guys think?

I think the term "slave" is not expressed correct by entertainment media.
Look at ancient greek, slavery looked very different than in all those movies.

I think our ideas about slavery, at least American slavery has been warped and skewed by hollywood movies and TV Series.

You can start with Roots where they show goofy looking white dudes rampaging through the jungle throwing nets on peaceful and playful African people and dragging them off. When in reality these slaves where already slaves of African tribes and were brought to ports of call and were traded for shiny beads.

It's the little things that are odd as well.

In the movie Django Unchained where they have Django stripped naked and hanging upside down, they have a metal mask around his head. While the metal mask was historically correct, it's specific purpose was to stop newly arrived African slaves from eating dirt. Africans at that time and I believe even today actually eat dirt as part of their diet. When they arrived in America they would continue this practice of eating dirt but their stomachs weren't adapted to the dirt in America and would get sick. So they had to put those metal masks on them.

Slavery people are used to: people are captured, works for food and shelter, get abused and cannot leave.

New form of slavery: people are starving so they willingly work for food + shelter with very little pay. Whenever they group together to ask for pay, government would come in and send leaders to jail. Workers get sick and will not be able to afford doctors so it's literally survival of fittest. And yeah, people can leave their jobs whenever they want but their old life is even worse. While all this is happening, companies who hire them make mad profits and drive lambos across river just to see how tough lambos can be.

So yeah, the old slavery might not be good but people all over the world are definitely loving the new form.

Slavery used to be justified - The alternative was killing people.
