I don't think either party should mention race. Political policy should be judged on its own merit in relation to the national region, race has nothing to do with that.

Its a bit too late for that now isn't it? For 40 years the republican party have been using racial dog-whistles of one sort of another. That is what has driven non-whites wholesale into the democratic party, nothing else. Remember many of these people are socially conservative and so would otherwise fit in quite well with republican values, but the continual republican racist spiel has completely alienated them. Trump is just the latest incarnation of that.

And whatever the apologists here say, it is exceedingly evident to just about everyone that trump is playing a very VERY loud racist dog-whistle, to activate white voters.
