Well, I mean, I don't want Finland to join NATO, so for me it makes no difference whether it exists or not, because obviously NATO won't do jack to defend non-NATO countries. So, like I said, just disband it. That'll stop any discussion in Finland about whether we should join it or not, as well, and the US won't have to pay so much. Win-win.

Has someone forgotten what a treaty is? There's the internet to look for definitions if you aren't up to date with even the most basic level of international politics.

I think you might have missed the point I was trying to make, but if you read the first reply in this post, it might clear things up a bit.

NATO is a defensive pact. Crimea being annexed is as meaningful to the writ of NATO as if Australia annexed Malaysia. There is nothing established in NATO about protecting countries that are not a part of NATO.

And one of the two main reasons for that is that they have a very high rate of military spending with a well armed populace that conceptually would make it very hard to conquer. If Obama's primary point is that the countries who feel threatened by Russia are just leeching off of France, Germany, the UK, and the US as opposed to establishing their own defense, the comparison does apply.

President Obama is right. Europe's military is a joke. With Russia and China upgrading their hardware, we can't rely on burgers to protect us all the time. Besides , whatever you may think of refugee crisis in terms of ethics, they just waltz into Europe whenever they please. This needs to change.

Only the UK and France are at least putting some degree of effort in it, and Poland is now also investing in it.
The German military is laughable for a country that size and with that level of wealth. My own country has nothing but some Jeeps and a few old F16 jets.
