More visual effects and attack companions - can we turn off/down effects from others?

Diablo 3 already makes the tons and tons of pets from demonhunters and witch doctor are nearly invisible to other players.

In Legion with another melee class and demo warlocks and BM hunters adding more melee pets than ever it would be really nice to have the same feature (make it optional for people who enjoy the clutter) so you only see your own character spells and maybe even make other melee players turn transcluent?

If you don't know Diablo3 in Multiplayer - check the witch doctor in the lower left of this image

He is surrounded by his pets - but they are opaque to me since we are in multiplayer.

Something like that would be nice in Legion.
For long enough melees have to stand in a clusterfuck of effects that are not cool, helpful or interesting:

As ranged the problem is less severe, for melee's I can understand that such a option is desired. Having a BM hunter with the loudest roar pet ever ( Loque'nahak ) and some big ass warlock pet in your face can be quite annoying.

Playing melee since vanilla launch, never had a problem. I actually like the effects in the melee. That's where I want to be, in the center of the fight, where bullets, fireballs, arrows and swords crash.

On one hand I agree, on the other - I do want to see my character and not an epileptic seizure inducing party.

Spell animations from other players are already automatically toned down in raids. IIRC there might be config settings to make it reduce them even more.

It is clutter when you check the second picture. That's not an opinion.

Option to turn off effects like Black Desert would be a bandaid fix thats better than nothing.

In an ideal world we could resolve it with friendly fire and more precise hitboxes, so that lighting bolt and that glowing swirling sword passing through your body would actually hurt you and people would not be just mindlessly spam their skills on top of each other. But I guess that's not 'fun'.

First of all, player collision would change pretty much every group encounter in the game. Friendly fire would force the developers to remove every splash damage and not more aoe. Hunter barrage killing all melees including their own pets? Warrior whirlwind decapitating all other melees? Would the bodys be a line of sight for healers, too? Imagine a big tauren furor warrior blocking the healing that was meant for the goblin DK tank...

So your ideal world would be a completely different game.

Or an evolutionary step forward for the same game.

You might want to try Tera - there you can physically hide behind a blocking tank and won't get damage for example but of you don't use the cover his shield offers, you get hit by the boss (you need to dodge the cleave of the attack yourself)

Seems like a fair request certain spells already have this visible to the user invisible to teammates functionality. IE earthquake.

Yep, but it's still a mess. A general way to make other player effects and pets translucent (maybe with a regulator) would be perfect.

I know about that. It is like an inch moved forward on a long road. I expect that to be the direction all newer games will slowly grow to.

Its not just MMOs, many RTS nowadays come with projectile physics underneath that will be blocked by other units or terrain in the path, despite the unit selection and target selection method remaining the same old.

I don't like symptom fighting. Are the spell effects the issue? I don't think so. Most spell effects make sense and the art fits (within the limitations of their performance budget). Hiding them just hides the problem. Things like everyone walks on top of the same five squaremeters and hits on the bosses tail with spells and swings flying into his party members faces is not the ideal solution in my opinion. Does it really have to remain that way? Whats the big problem if it changes and is not anymore the same? It's just like don't stand in the fire on crack.

If you think the effect are over the top in general thats a whole different issue.
