Victims of a New African Massacre

    https://richarddawkins.net/2016/04/v...acre-gorillas/

The Grauer’s gorilla, the world’s largest primate, has been a source of continual worry for conservationists for more than two decades. Longstanding conflict in the deep jungles of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo left experts with no choice but to guess at how that gorilla subspecies may be faring.

Now, with tensions abating somewhat, researchers finally have an updated gorilla head count — one that confirms their fears. According to findings compiled by an international team of conservationists, Grauer’s gorilla populations have plummeted 77 percent over the last 20 years, with fewer than 3,800 of the animals remaining.

“We suspected that the Grauer’s gorilla had declined because of all the insecurity in the region, but no one had an idea of how much they’d declined by,” said Andrew Plumptre, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Albertine Rift Program in Central and Eastern Africa. “It turns out that the rate of collapse pushes this subspecies to the verge of extinction.”

Grauer’s gorillas — named after Rudolf Grauer, an Austrian explorer and zoologist who first recognized the apes as a separate subspecies — resemble their close relative, the mountain gorilla, save for their longer limbs and shorter hair. Although Grauer’s and mountain gorilla populations were once connected, years of isolation have left them genetically distinct enough to warrant separate designations as eastern gorilla subspecies.

In 1994, the Wildlife Conservation Society conducted surveys in and around Kahuzi-Biega National Park, in what was then eastern Zaire. Researchers estimated that 17,000 Grauer’s gorillas remained. But the Rwandan genocide that year led to the gorillas’ precipitous decline.
Is it even worth to try and conserve them?

Invade Zaire to liberate them, resettle them to a more peaceful country.

Maybe we could build reservations in Southeast Asia, Tropical East Asia and Latin America where the gorillas could live a life similar to how they survive in the Congo.

Should move them to a more peaceful region and far away from people.

why should we? unless they are a source of food for us or help us get rid of other dangerous species, why should we give a fuck?

Sounds like America. They start with the same character although so it may not be a coincidence.

    1. They're a cousin 2. They serve an ecological role which in turns effects us. 3. We're the ones killing them.

Because we should care about everything that's sentient, both humans and gorillas.

Did you care about that cow that was murdered so you could eat that burger at 'donalds?

We obviously care about Congolese, we adopt their children, we give them humanitarian aid.

Because cows can't recognize themselves in a mirror. Cows don't fashion tools and cows don't have culture.

Apes (including humans and gorillas) do, bovines don't.

Congo is a tragic mess. I have a solution, though! Have the UN give money, food, and water to area leadership to distribute evenly among their people. Problem solved, boys.

    So give them welfare then?

Well the gorillas aren't at war with each other. The suffering of African humans is all caused by humans themselves anyway.

Why support a cesspool of poverty and radical Islam?! That's like trying to fill up a black hole, odds are the supplies will end up sold by the government to other African countries, or supporting terrorist groups and warlords.

The African continent needs a hard reset by having the UN funding and supporting a trusted and reliable force to sweep across the continent and bring all that anarchy under one banner and civilized by force. That or we will eventually get sick of it and just glass the continent from orbit in 50 years or so.

Nature will adapt without them as it has for millions of years.

Because the ecological implications that'll occur on the removal of the species?

MinutePhysics does an excellent job of explaining why some species are invaluable to save, while others, not so much.

Why use so many words for what basically means "I don't give a fuck"

Except in those circumstances, most of the time it's a slow, long process that allows social evolution to take place, whereas we're pushing it far too fast, let alone we're a smart, intelligent and capable species. The fact that we continue to decimate thousands of species a year, as well as their environment is a showcase towards to fact we're just ignorant morons.

We have had many mass extinction events. Earth has recovered from every single one so far.
