If the life of my family depended on it and I saw absolutely no other way, I guess I would do it (not from a needy family though)... But in reality, there are so many other, legal, ways to get food, that I cannot imagine a situation in which it would be necessary to steal.

I think stealing, when it is a matter of life and death, is like killing in self-defense: while normally killing is a murder, the situation in which your life is threatened and the only way to save yourself is to kill the aggressor is considered exception. You see, there are some people like you who would allow themselves die of starvation (taking the noble path), rather than steal. Other people are not as ethical as you though.
