Overwatch is fun and enjoyable but...

I have long since played an FPS game. I used to only play them exclusively ever since I began my big stint into PC gaming back in 1997, however around 2009 or so I just haven't cared much at all for the genre. Instead I prefer third person shooters for action shooty shooty combat.

That being said, Overwatch piqued my interest and knowing Blizzard's game polish, I went ahead and preordered with some friends. Didn't get into any of the previous testing weekend or anything so I was able to finally sink my teeth in a bit over the past day or so. It's fun! I found myself genuinely enjoying playing an FPS again. I was happy to see the spray feature as well, hearkening back to my extensive history with Half-Life and its plethora of mods.

Despite my first day and a half of playing Overwatch and enjoying it, I must say it's not lived up to the hype. It feels like a better/modern TF2. There's nothing super new going on but maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing. So far my only gripe is the lack of variety in game modes. Defend this, push with that, hold an area but on different environments. Also some of the maps have some really gnarly choke points and sometimes damage indicators are almost non-existant (I find myself feeling like I get one shot when in reality I've taken several 'silent' hits). So for me, this will be a strictly super casual game or else I see myself burning out rather quickly. Outside of that I gotta say I love the different characters, they all feel fun in their own way both in play style and in aesthetics

TL;DR -- Not worthy of all the hype, but still a fun little FPS for romping around in.

That's great. That's your own personal opinion and you're definitely entitled to it. Not sure you needed to make a thread just to let us know, though, but thanks for the info.

    Pretty much said it.

Not getting anything from me with this thread. I like Overwatch, playing for the first time now since I didn't get beta.

Hype? I really have not seen much hype about it. I just seem to notice people enjoy playing more than watching. Something like their HotS was more fun watching than playing.

Did anyone actually think overwatch was more than a better looking tf2?

There's a lot of differences between the two that make them entirely different playing experiences. People who genuinely think this are either very short-sighted or not experienced with both games.

Hey look! Someone who played TF2 but not Overwatch and feels compelled to go around telling everyone what Overwatch is like.

TF2 has what? 6-7 classes? Overwatch has like 20. Does tf2 have a huge guy with a huge rectangular energy shield? How about a shotgunner with a hook that yanks people in? A time traveling speedster? How about a giant ape that jumps and drops energy shields? No?

The people who keep pinning tf2 on it are the people who havent played OW and have no clue what they are talking about and yet love to tell everyone what they don't know.

You can put a bunch of shit on top of ice cream and its still ice cream.

Also I have played it and enjoy it but you're still doing the same shit you did in tf2 like capping points and escorting payloads and that kind of shit.

what is wrong with overwatch being like tf2? tf2 was awesome, played it for hundreds of hours, overwatch is like tf2 but better at almost anything, characters are more unique, abilities are not hidden behind items and you dont have to sacrifice some abilites to get another, artstyle, variety in character stories everything is just better, only thing i am missing from tf2 is glorious thing called spy class...

and before anyone calls me a blizzard fanboy, i have been a huge blizzard hater last 2 or so years, i think both HotS and Hearthstone are horseshit and diablo/wow is mediocre at their current state

i feel like overwatch is the first satisfying release blizzard has put out in recent years

Well, I saw a few threads making similar such feedback/reviews so I wanted to throw in my two cents for any potential buyers out there.

In my post I said that it's not necessarily a bad thing. I never really got into TF2 very much. When it first came out I played it for a few months here and there but ultimately got bored of it. TF2 didn't suck me in like TFC (Team Fortress Classic) did back in the day and I was quick to drop it. However Overwatch has sucked me in unlike TF2 did.

Haven't played Overwatch yet, despite being very interested. Have a feeling I'd end up feeling like op, also afraid that I'll be simultaneously pissed off with people playing what they want because "Fuck the team, you don't own me" and frustrated that I can't play what I want. I ended up buying battleborn because it had a more forgiving vibe, though I get that's probably illusory - team comp will still dictate what I play. I keep getting the sinking feeling that I've backed the wrong horse anyhow, and will probably end up buying Overwatch in a couple of months anyway when battleborn becomes a ghost town...

It's also just like minesweeper b/c you push/click buttons and sometimes things will blow up. Overwatch, best Minesweeper Simulator 2016.

Overwatch is pretty fun - probably not quite the same longevity factor as WoW or HotS for me personally, but it's a legitimately solid offering in the FPS genre. Not so sure on the "hype" factor as I've not really seen a great deal of it, unless you count advertising itself as "hype."

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see." ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

I love it so far, for me it has definitely lived up to the hype

The only real complaint I have about Overawatch is that my mouse hand hurts like hell because I've been playing it for 7 hours.

    Other than that, nothing.

I am definitely enjoying it! While it is not perfect and still has some technical issues for some people (still in Beta though), as long as they provide support through patches, skins and extra heroes in the future; as well as promote it on youtube/twitch, I can see this game being quite successful.
