A while back the National Autistic Society noticed that Thomas the Tank Engine has a special draw for kids who fall into the gamut of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

It's kind of interesting. The researchers found that children with ASD were unusually drawn towards the show. They attributed this to the narrative and the facial expressions of characters being very deliberate and very friendly. As those affected by ASD tend to have issues socializing and understanding emotions and expressions. But the show would present a simpler narrative and explaining the emotions to viewers, combined with obvious and exaggerated facial expressions, allowing these children to more easily identify both the feelings and emotions on display.

I can't help but notice that anime has a very similar structure, both scripted and visually. Exaggerated facial expressions and emotional displays as well as simpler narratives where the character will at times verbally express their emotional states. They become increasingly easy for persons with ASD to understand the depicted emotions and feelings where they otherwise have trouble reading people. I can see why anime is a hugely important thing for people with ASD and understand the widespread appeal as a result. I think it's great that there's more accessible television for those who have social and communication difficulties.

As an uncle to a nephew that is autistic, I can agree, but on different circumstances. I think it is more about the trains than the faces. My nephew is crazy about them. He is also super fascinated with large vehicles of any given kind. Aircraft etc. Interesting correlation.

I really liked Thomas as a child my mom won't give away my train sets because I liked them so much...and they were expensive.

Could be a way of rejecting the obsessive-competitiveness (the idea of 'social Darwinism' is institutional sociopathy) and unnecessarily hostile culture they're surrounded by.

However, anime is way too broad a genre to use as a litmus test like this.
